I’m absolutely gutted. This is a disaster.
We had Dawson a few months ago but clearly low balled him. The closer to family reason is just something to say instead of “he is leaving because we don’t value paying him”.
Shocking list management. Absolutely pathetic.Comment

Gonna disagree. Not necessarily precisely on pick 4, but if some of the trades of recent years are indicators, a bloke who’s one of the best kicks in the comp, can play third defender, backline release and wing, stellar mark, 20 quality possessions a game and coming into his prime, then a late first round pick and average second ruck ain’t it.
The counter of course is the Swans are practical traders. Just think this is one where both Adelaide clubs will be desperate to get him for different reasons (Adelaide, he’s young and massive list improvement; Port, premiership window) and we can play the market hard.Comment

While I really don't see the family reason as strong 'justification' in the modern footy world, in this case its probably not entirely far from the trugh, all things considered."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

I dont agree. If he was really about maximising his return, then why wouldn't he sign a 2 year extension now (at money relatively close to what he will get in Adelaide - multiple media sources suggesting our offer was fairly generous) and then move as a free agent, where he can probably demand a significant premium compared to what he will get moving now as Fruit Tingles/Port wouldn't have to give anything up for him from a trade perspective.

Also given our cap issues we would have peanuts to pay him next year. Take the money when you can.Comment

Whilst I wish he had stayed I am not as disappointed as some with Dawson leaving. I think a lot depends on what we get in return. Also whilst I think he is a very good player I also think he is more replaceable than a good key position player.Comment

I'd be astounded if we only offered him a 4 or 5 year contract, and didn't offer him at least something relatively palatable to take him up to free agency - you may not think so, but I think our recruitment staff are not completely stupid, and would recognise the relative drivers of the free agency world we now operate in."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

Dylan Shiel was two first rounders. Pick 4 is fair.Comment

Losing Aliir has made us look stupid. That will be nothing compared to this.Comment
