Good. I like McLean. He’ll never be a superstar, but a good, solid, depth player and if things go well, can play a post Buddy forward line role. Importantly, a big body to take pressure of McDonald while he develops.

Wonder though what the retention of him and Amarty says for Reid?

Time should be up for Sam. A too often injured player whose place can be taken by Amartey etc. Had had a good run with contracts. Coach loves him but enough is enough.

He says we say we’ve got money to pay $500k for a player to “replace” JD and mentions that we are not expecting Hewett to be on our list in 2022. That’s about it.

I’m trying to stay positive that we aren’t in a Collingwood like position and are not salary dumping anyone*

Says Carlton offering George $450k a year for four years. I like George, but that’s slight overs for me.

The more they pay for him and the longer the contract the better it is for us. This is because the secret herbs and spices recipe for determining compensation for restricted free agents takes these types of factors into account.

Yes, but will the RFA formula take into account their future employment as a Visy brand ambassador?

You know that your player is going to Carlton, when; they rapidly change the screen that they're viewing, and you later find out, that it wasn't porn, but a tutorial entitled, "Cardboard boxes and their role in civilisation".

Dawson was a key piece in our climb towards a premiership, wicks and McLean will play zero role in that.

It concerns me that our list managers don’t seem to subscribe to this theory, particularly when Josh is heading into what will surely be his final season
Longmire tends to be more conservative than many coaches in this regard. CBA's for example are pretty narrowly spread at Sydney.

That is certainly true for the Swans, although oft neglected on RWO.

True, but maybe the coaches have a view of when our list will mature to be truly competing and are planning accordingly. As in, when will our young brigade be fully developed, and when will McDonald or other KPPs be ready.

In 24/25, we will have Parker, Mills, Warner, Rowbottom, Gulden, JMac, maybe Campbell, Heeney at times, Stephens if he stays and develops, Florent if he doesn’t get overtaken and improves, and whatever else we add between now and then.

I like George and in an ideal world he stays, but we need to make choices to build a flag ready list.

You assume we can actually retain that core group

As Dawson just showed, that's absolutely a risk. But the club have to back themselves to keep as many as possible.

As I said, I like George and would ideally keep him. But something has to give. Now, not wanting to pick on an individual player, but if you gave me a choice between George and Florent, for example, I'd keep George. But George is on the wrong end of the musical chairs it seems.

They clearly don't rate Hewett. Not only did he not get a contract, but I don't think he was in the top 10 for the B&F either. I'd guess likely related to him being not compatible with our game plan that requires speed and elite skills.

On Dawson, I'd be asking for Jordon Butts from the crows in a straight swap.

I'm not sure its that they don't rate him. I think its more that in the pecking order of re-signings he was much lower down the list perhaps due to likely cost v potential contribution going forward? They knew they could not keep all of their priorities so we was the one to be sacrificed. Of course, we did not bank on losing Dawson.
