Think Melbourne bid on Heeney at 2, we matched then they took Petracca at 3?

Wonder what the clubs strategy is this year with picks, that may influence the deal we (try and) do with the Cows.

I like the prospect of Heeney playing in the midfield more. He is good at the contest and is also fantastic with his disposals. His marking prowess will also go a long way in replacing Dawson as a target out of defence. Likewise his ability to drift forward. The comparisons with Petracca and even Bont are appropriate from a talent point of view - just needs to stay fit and play to his ability.

I'm fascinated too, both how much we'll try for picks this year vs future picks, and what types of players we are after. Lots are convinced we'll go primarily after KPPs and rucks but I'm not so sure.

In 2021 was the year Mills moved to the midfield, with huge success, let 2022 be the year Heeney delivers on his potential. Crossing everything that he can stay injury free. I really like the amount of confidence Horse is putting in our young forwards - McDonald, McLean and Amartey. Give them every chance.

Seems like Heeney can now be replaced in the forward half. Just like Mills could be in defence in 2021. Hayward, Gulden, Papley, and Wicks all had good seasons. Heeney, Parker, Warner can rest forward. Heeney has all the attributes to get that 15-20 disposals with maximum damage. He probably was rolled deep in defence and worked a lot to provide defence and maybe that was the reason with his work ethic that he is tired and he goes missing in games. Maybe they should stick to play him front 60% of the ground and forget about sending him back to defence and allow him to cause maximum damage forward of the ball.

Really good to hear that Heeney will play more midfield next year to accommodate McDonald. It makes a lot of sense.

I really hope that my next prediction that Paddy McCartin becomes a revelation as a cheap KPD pickup also comes off.

I may be pushing my luck but drafting van Rooyen would also be tops.

Adelaide advertiser reporting swans demanding early first round pick for Dawson throwing back the crows recent trading in their face. Lever two first rounders and Charlie Cameron pick 12. Pick 23 won’t get it done, especially when it will blow out to around 28.
Crows say pick 4 off the table.
Wicks ready so sign, as yet no contract offers to Reid and Ronke.

Good to see the Swans playing hardball for once. Lever and Cameron are excellent precedents the Crows have set for themselves. They also gave up two first rounders for a 28 year-old Bryce Gibbs.

BTW Hawks are open to the "full range of possibilities to improve its 2021 draft hand, including trading future picks and even moving on established players ... The club’s ample cap room could open up the possibility of paying some of the salary of a departing player to maximise the draft pick the Hawks received in exchange for that star."

Is there anyone at the Hawks we'd be interested in trading in?

I’ve been giving some thought to the PSD threat and I’m warming to the thought that Gold Coast could actually be our best friend. They’ve already been burnt by the PSD with Jack Martin. They have Rankine and Lukosius potentially being targeted by Adelaide next year. Salary cap could be an issue but it still may be in their best interest to signal that the PSD is not a fait de compli for every Adelaide trade target. If we do any trading with them where it seems Gold Coast get the better end of the deal then look out.

I also really like the messaging coming from the Swans around the Dawson trade. I’m not sure we’d be talking too tough if there was no chance of us being able to follow through. Not really much point in talking tough if you know you have to accept pick 23 or worse in the end. If the list management team think we are going to get bent over, Harley would start softening the blow with his messaging rather than the current tough talk.

There's also the incentive of good faith trading itself having value with respect to future trade relations.

I’ve heard a rumour that we are interested in Daniel Howe. I guess he would be a (cheaper) replacement for Hewett but that would go against the idea of more midfield time for the likes of Rowbottom Warner Gulden and even Heeney as mentioned earlier

Tough talk is fine but we need to have a strategy to extract an earlier pick out of Adelaide. I expect our best bet is to try and bring Port into the equation as I'm sure they would still be interested in Dawson. Tell them that we will do a trade then and there with them if they offer us their first rounder (16) plus first or second rounder for 2022. Alternatively, they could throw Ladhams into the deal. They then go to his Manager and say the Swans won't do a deal with Adelaide but will with us right now. Surely given Port's current list and their location, they are a viable option for the hopelessly homesick "Jordy".

And the precedent bit here is perfectly appropriate. Neither Cameron or Lever were at the stage they were traded in any way superior to Dawson. So if he wants his mum’s cooking and his manager wants his cut they better go get busy and work with Adelaide on a better deal.

The other thing Adelaide and the young fella need to realise is the Swans are reasonable and practical traders. We probably aren’t expecting pick 4, but we’re not here to be screwed over either.
