Question: When does Dawson's current contract with us officially expire?
The reason I'm asking is if we don't broker a deal with the Crows before the end of the trade period (Wednesday 7:30pm), is Dawson still allowed to re-sign with us thereafter before the PSD? If so, this may give us further opportunity to make him get cold feet in nominating for the PSD. Wouldn't put this past the club in the way how this has all transpired & how it must be infuratiating them.I don't know if I'm missing something, but if no deal is reached for Dawson by Wednesday, things can still be done until the end of October. Picks can still be traded. If an agreement is reached on a pick swap, then Dawson can be delisted and signed by Adelaide as a DFA. If no deal is reached, then Dawson can decide to sign with us or go to the PSD.
It may impinge on a potential Ladhams deal though, since we would have to leave cap space open to potentially re-sign Dawson.Comment

Hmm. I suspect the plan is the eek as much profit from Ladhams for Dawson as possible. At the moment, it seems the respective Adelaide teams are pricing each player around the same (absurdly in each case). We need to get as much as we can on top of Melbourne's first rounder for Dawson and get Port down to a second rounder for Ladhams. In both cases we're not the initiating party, so there's presumably room to erode the position of the other side.Comment

I know others have commented already, but you have to seriously question the PSD and it’s relevance.
It is a bit of a joke that a team with pick 4 could/will walk a player through.
I can understand the AFL being OK with the concept of the bottom team or two getting access to the best talent that falls through the trade period, particularly if they are on the younger side - in line with the equalisation philosophy the draft is the foundation of.
And furthermore those teams leveraging that PSD benefit during the trade period to assist them further.
But how far should that go? If there are other factors (eg. geographical / go-home, salary cap, player power in nominating preferred destination etc etc) that are impacting whether the bottom couple of teams even actually use the PSD to access those best talents who slip through, then surely that is the best argument to just scrap the whole thing completely.Comment

Latest offer from Adelaide: Melbourne's future 1st round pick for Dawson (afl.com.au).

This watch over the Dawson trade is rather similar to Catholics watching the chimney of the Sistine Chapel to see what colour the smoke is.Comment

It is interesting seeing how many players we have selected in the first round of the draft. Most clubs trade out of the first round of the draft from time to time, some to the point of using the minimum first-round picks possible and being barred from further trading out of first-round picks.
We don't do that. The last year where we had no participation in the first round of the draft was 2005. We have used at least one first round pick every year since 2006. In some of those years, we traded out of the first round and then gained a first-round pick to match a bid on Academy players (2014 Heeney, 2015 Mills, 2018 Blakey, 2020 Campbell). Overall, we have been more consistent participants in the first round of the draft than most other clubs.
In the last 15 seasons, we have selected 18 players in the first round of the draft. Seasons in which we selected two were 2009, 2016 and 2020.
2005 none.
2006 15 (Daniel O'Keefe)
2007 11 (Patrick Veszpremi)

Just watched a few match highlights from Ladhams profile on AFL.COM.AU and I was a little surprised how well he moves for a big bloke! He has decent speed and mobility for a ruckman and looked clean enough below the knees too! Set shot goal kicking and marking on a lead also seems good.
He's only currently 23 years old too so has a lot of development left in him for a ruckman! We'd be mad not to give him a go!

Thanks for the link. A great article. Supporters of the Northern clubs can all relate to this. I hate this time of the year too! I dread it when a good player who originates from another State (75% of our list) saids that he wants to wait till the end of the season to make his decision. That is the start of the agony. There are going to be plenty next season. Let's hope it is a far better outcome than this year!Comment

Yes, he can re-sign with us after the draft period closes. I would think that he can re-sign right up to the date when he needs to nominate for the PSD. That's what happened with ROK some years back when he re-signed after a trade to the Hawks could not be negotiated. Its a long shot that he would agree to re-sign unless he sees that there is a big chance Norf are going to take him.Comment
