2021 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel

I’m disappointed about how the PSD process limited the true market value for Dawson being reflected in the trade, let alone the complete lack of bona fides from the Cows. Justin Reid’s comments on Trade Radio made me want to spew.

I worry that if the AFL don’t do something it isn’t good for the Suns with Lukusios, Rankine and King. It’s been mentioned on the board that there is no longer a place for the PSD in light of the rules around listing a delisted free agent. I agree. If a team needed to use a pick in the National Draft to recruit a target they will bring a more measured reflection on the value of an uncontracted player into their negotiations.

I also agree with Ralph Dawg that I’m unsure Dawson will thrive in the footy bubble of Adelaide like he has in our system. He doesn’t take me as having the steel or the ego it required, particularly when you’ve got Ricciuto and Cornes scrutinising every piece of football related content daily - it’s how they earn a crust.

I don’t post much so I’ll get it all out - happy with the Ladhams trade including the AA for Hickey component. It’s about executing the actions that fit the long term list strategy. Not all of those moves make sense by themselves, but I think in two years time we’ll look back and think it was prudent.

Agree with Ludwig having your players not come out of contact is a pretty important part of executing that strategy. Hopefully the seasons with normalise and the AFL can give greater certainty to clubs about TPP going forward.

The key takeaways is we need to ensure Freo and West Coast are top 8 teams when McDonald comes off contract.

It is interesting when you go and look at our team, it is a fairly deep list re mids and forwards.........but still a little short in the backline......Gould, OConnor, Melican and or maybe PAddy? will need to keep the pressure on and compete for spots.

Blakey will need to keep developing as that extra tall when required down back.

A left side of Rampe, Blakey, Campbell and Gulden is deadly via exits and entries !!!!

        IN: Ladhams, Paddy?
OUT: Hewett, Dawso, Brand, Carruthers, Ling, Gray

        Cunningham, T.McCartin, Rampe
        Lloyd, Fox, Blakey
        Jmac, Mills, Campbell?
        Paps, Bud, Gulden
        Wicks, McDonald, Hayward
        Parker, Hickey, Heeney

        BENCH
        19 Kennedy
        20 Florent
        21 Warner
        22 Stephens
        23 Rowbottom
        24 Oriordan
        25 Ladhams
        26 Sinclair
        27 Gould
        28 McLean
        29 Amartey
        30 Reid?
        31 Melican
        32 Sheather
        33 Bell?
        34 Taylor?
        35 Clarke?
        36 Oconnor?
        37 Paddy?
        38 Ronke?

I’m sorry, punching our club? I have no clue how you’ve come up with that statement.

Dawson is far more important to us (and a better player) than Ladhams.

“George is a terrific person and has been a wonderful contributor to our club over the past eight seasons,” Gardiner said.

“He is a great competitor and has been a really consistent player for us over his 120-game career.

“We regard him highly as both a player and person. He has been a very popular and respected player within the four walls of our club.

“While we are disappointed to see him depart, we wish him, Alice and Henry all the very best,” he said.

            (Sydney Swans thank George Hewett)

            Exhibit Jordan:

“We thank Jordan for the contribution he has made to the club over the past six seasons,” he said.

(Swans finalise trade deal for Jordan Dawson)

A pretty telling difference in the public response to the two departures. One warm and compassionate and human; the other the indifference of postured politeness.
Yup. As subtle as a brick. It's too be expected though. Just gotta look at the positives though, it'll free up $3M + in future years that can now
be utilised to hold onto emerging players.

My gut feeling is that Rowbottom can do a similar role to Hewett ie run with type player

Dawso will be missed but we do have a stack of left side players with sharp kicks Rampe, Campbell, Blakey, Gulden, Stephens

Key for me was making sure our ruck was deep in case we are back in the finals and if injury strikes your main ruckman you are stuffed in a finals series against elite rucks

For me my main concern is our backline.........seeing the difference that May and Lever made to the Melb backline was stand out

For a finals series do we have the backline to repel repel repel like Melb did first two qtrs?

Yep. I think we are all realistic about our weakness, and what we need to prioritise to consolidate our push into contention - and reckon the club would know it too.

The good thing is we now have the collateral in picks and cap space to think through the best solution.

I agree Auntie. This draft should be about adding strengthening our defence to some degree. I also wouldn't be surprised if we see McLean, Amartey or Reid (if he we offer him a contract) down back. I like some others would like to see Paddy M added, but a combination of his concussion history and on-field brain fade but counter that happening.

The forward line next year will be stacked for talls, but come two years time, i suspect that the Bud will hang up his boots, Hickey will also be on the way out. That will leave McDonald to be the Big Dog in the forward line, flanked by McLean and Amartey. Ladhams will ruck. This seems pretty settled fr the next 5-6 years at least (if the McLean/McDonald and Amartey) come on.
I don’t for one minute think that Buddy’s final year is 2022. I think he got his body in great order in the last preseason. The only games he missed through injury were from a collision injury, not soft tissue.

He will build on this in this offseason and could have a better year in 2023. Some old guys just learn to manage their bodies and go on and on. Shaun Burgoin was a a great example and Christiano Ronaldo is another.

Why not Buddy. He wants to play on and I think he’s probably now working harder than any other player on the list.

Nice words, but David king is a moron. Whenever I listen to him I conciously accept the exact opposite of what he says as the truth.
He gave North Melbourne an A rating for the 2021 season for gawds sake. They were last for every single round.

If after two years, Dawson struggles in the SA football bubble and fails to live up to his salary with on field performance, I would happily take him back for a low 3rd round pick and the Crows paying a significant portion of his salary for the remainder of his contract.

No, I've contacted the new Premier "Perro" (as he's known down at his local) and told him he can open up whatever he wants, but no player
that ever leaves the Swans to go home to Timbuktu or wherever will ever be allowed to cross the border back into NSW again.

So for getting Ladhams we gave up the 1st round pick we obtained from Melbourne and a future third round pick in 2022. Have I got that right?

No. We've kept the future first (Melbourne's). We exchanged our current year's first round pick with Port's - ie slid back four places in this year's first round. And then threw in the future 3rd (pick 54?)

Is there a football pundit that Red and White approves off? King, Matthew Lloyd, Roo, Silvagni, Morris and Edmund all get routinely smashed on Red and White.

                                Do people like Kane Cornes?
