We have done well to have around 25% of our list now from NSW. It wasn't too long ago it was only 10%. This should help counter the dreaded "homesickness" disease that plagues the northern clubs. It will probably take another couple of decades of further growth of the popularity of AFL up north to have 50% of the list from NSW. The Academies are so critical to the future of all 4 northern clubs.Comment

There are two scenarios really I see for resolving issues like this in the future
(1) The provision of a truly independent arbitration body that assigns a fair value that is binding on both parties after a hearing.
(2) That players go through to the National Draft in the instance of a trade not being finalised
Firstly, it would be difficult to find an individual, let alone a panel, who was independent enough but still connected enough to truely judge relative value of current players as well as the strength of the upcoming draft etc.
But even if you addressed that, you’d still have the issue of a stalemate where one club or the other either disagreeing with the valuation, or just not being willing/able to fulfil it, and not being willing to proceed.
And how far would the process go? Eg. if it ruled Dawson was worth pick 10, how does that really help if Adelaide just don’t want to trade pick 4 under any circumstances, and/or can’t trade with whoever has pick 10? Or is it the value index that would apply and they just have to offer the ‘value’ of pick 10 which could be a bunch of later picks that we wouldn’t want or even use?
The problem the AFL have from an equalisation perspective is that good players seeking a trade will generally do so to either a) go to a strong club/team or b) go ‘home’.
So allowing this to go unchecked will disproportionately impact lowly clubs and the northern state teams. Luckily we’re at least well enough run as a club to not expect to be the former in the foreseeable future, but the other aspect is certainly an issue.Comment

Moving on, ESPN's first 2 rounds draft prediction has us pick Van Rooyen at 18 and Motlop for our 2nd pick. Not sure why we would need a another small goal sneek like Motlop. Sheldrick, who I like, is the next predicted pick and hope we grab him as he is a tough ball getting midfielder.Comment

I'm betting Reid will be played in defence this year and if fit, I'm predicting he will lock down one of the KP spots. It will subsequently leave Melican, Gould and O'Connor as depth, with the possibility of PMac joining the queue. Fox has shown he can play as a third tall (albeit short!). It does make me wonder whether we need to draft a tall with our first rounder given that it's often hard to predict who will kick on with KP size players. Drafting midfielders seems to be more reliable. So I think we should just go with the best available midfielder. Who that is, I'll leave it up to KB.Comment

In fact there's an article up on the AFL website this morning debating whether GWS could be tempted out of pick 2! Who holds the early picks and what their decisions are usually shapes which club takes who and when. Does GWS take the best not tied mid in Callaghan, or best KPD in Gibcus or the highly exciting ruck in Andrew? Who they take shapes every other selection.
So Phantom drafts are nonsense BUT we must be looking at Van Rooyen I'd reckon unless we are confident of luring FA Barrass next year?Comment

Swans tend not to use high picks to draft KPDs (I’m not including McCartin or Gould here), and Gardiner has said we are looking to add to the midfield. But that could be misdirection …Comment

Hope not this year as we only draft dud mids with high picks , hoping Stephens bucks the trend , didnt like his form lateComment

We have a strong young midfield group with Sheather looking a promising prospect. We might rookie draft Academy prospect Angry Anderson. And we can use picks 31 and 39 on midfield types; there are plenty of good mids to come from that part of the draft.
I see that Campbell Chesser and Leek Alleer are the 2 picks before our 2nd pick. Both are players we would be interested in. Chesser is a chance with our 1st pick too. He was rated in the top 10 at one time.
Cal Twomey is the one who usually gets the closest to what goes down on draft night.Comment

Those Phantom Drafts are just space filling rubbish like most of the AFL media regurgitations. Chris Doerre the author of the ESPN piece would have no idea who we are targeting, I'd reckon that actual knowledge would be tightly held by no more than 6-8 within the Swans.

On AFL they’ve re ranked the 2020 draftees based on average ranking points per game:
Gulden is number 1, Logan 18, Braeden 20
2020'S DRAFTEES RE-RANKED: Who bolts up the order, who slides?
For some inexplicable reason they’ve included ganes where players were the unused medí-sub in the calculationsComment
