I don't know where I read it or if it was via an interview I heard but I'm sure Dalrymple was in charge of the Stephens pick but KB was heavily involved in the later picks.

Lots of draft previews popping up now. According to one pundit, our draft needs are key defenders, ball-winning midfielders, key forward depth and defensive run. They feel that those likely to be available at our pick include Jacob van Rooyen, Josh Sinn, Tyler Sonsie and Campbell Chesser. We may also consider Leek Alleer, Rhett Bazzo, Angus Sheldrick, Mitch Knevitt, Sam Banks, Alastair Lord and Shay Linke. If you want to read more its at the following link (firewall I'm afraid).

So they say we need defenders, midfielders and forwards. That's just about everything. I guess we finally have more than enough ruckmen. I'd hardly call that an analysis.

Anyway, I like the selection of players that might be available at our pick. We should get a decent player. Maybe we take a midfielder with pick 16 and hope one of the KPDs we like is available with our next pick. I think Aleer may go between 30 to 35. It's hard to say because he did so well in the vertical jump. Whether we sign up Paddy or not will influence our draft strategy.

Can we sign Paddy McCartin as a delisted FA next week when all clubs can add delisted FA's?

They say we need “key defenders, ball-winning midfielders, key forward depth and defensive run” I think we could do with another small forward too. Probably ok for wingmen.

Yes. But we may want the list spot vacant for the ND and list him in the next DFA period after the draft. If we are intent on taking him you'd assume there's a nudge and a nod to indicate that to him so he doesn't take up another offer elsewhere.

Brander will be signed as a DFA by GWS apparently, he was fleetingly in their academy before the AFL trimmed their catchment area.

Did you ever hear of a club needing a midfielder who couldn't win the ball? Or wanting one, for that matter?

I think we're fine for small forwards. Papley, Hayward and Wicks are a very good trio. Campbell and Gulden can also play the role if we have and injury. And of course Heeney can slot in anytime. It's always good to have more midfield depth to allow for a bit of role switching when required, and I think we should be able to accomplish that through the next couple of drafts (as noted in my previous post).

If Paddy knows that we are going to list him, then he doesn't need to register for the draft. Is that right? I'm not sure if he can be immediately listed as a rookie in the first DFA period, but certainly can post-draft. The rookie list is just a technicality these days.

Its interesting as well as Andersons not the typical academy kid that has been with them for years and probably feels some sort of obligation to Sydney. He wasnt even in the academy until early this year and actually spent a couple of years in Melbourne at Northern Knights (I think that was the team).

Brander would be well know to them as he was in the Giants academy for a while but for whatever reason was ineligible to be selected as an academy player in the draft.

And this might well be a good year to try and pluck an elite mid from outside the top-ten. Next year we'll have two first rounders (can't seem to remember why)

We've got a lot of players on our list who have the potential to become elite including: Heeney, Stephens, Campbell, Gulden, JMac (after attending a few centre bounces late this year), Warner, RB. We all think Mills will make it.

I wonder about option 3 this time next year when Buddy's salary is gone. If one of the above isn't demanding it, then we may well be in the market for an elite mid, but they are pretty hard to recruit...

We missed the top four by percentage this year, so I don't think we are a million miles off.

Amartey is really quick. Can't remember the game, but at a centre bounce he nailed someone really fast in a tackle and got HTB.
According to club records he is best over 20 metres.

The Clubs largely appeared to be lukewarm on Brander for some reason. Perhaps there is something unattractive to many about his time at the WCE, or he maybe is regarded as just not good enough?

But Hogan was also inaccurate on some easy shots earlier, which might have made things a lot harder. Plus, we have up two soft goals from d50 stoppages earlier when Chad got slipped.
We had the ball in our 50 arc for 20 minutes in the last quarter and managed 2.7 we had 20 more inside 50's but turned the ball over by kicking it to Taylor & Co. We did not play our latest style of footy. We bombed the ball too much.

But we had as much, if not more of the play.

Agreed, Ludwig, that they are casting the net wide there. It probably reflects the current state of our list where we have players with potential in most areas. Personally, I think the key defender area is the obvious deficiency area. I'm not convinced that the Pelican is the answer. Aleer looks promising - the comparisons to Aliir will be obvious. Apart from focusing on that area in the draft, I would just go for best available after that. If that's a mid that's fine with me.
