Read the story of lewis Taylor prior to drafting and you will be eating humble pie- hardly grew up in privileged circumstances. The kids that make it mostly deserve it. I think you are starting to sound like a Herald Sun / Daily Telegraph headline writer

At risk of deletion due to being 'off topic', I believe the Murdoch run H/S would never diss a system that favours the rich. Just sayin'.

The amount of politics and lobbying that occurs at even the lowest levels of kids sports is astounding. I've seen countless times kids being chosen in rep teams purely due to the influence of their parents. I'd hate to think how many of these kids just give up playing due to the system.

Of course there will be stories like Lewis, but how many more could there be if they were given an equal opportunity?

I didn't say I didn't believe you. I'm sure what you have witnessed personally is true. I'd just need more evidence before I would be prepared to accept that these practices are widespread.

The same thought occurred to me.

Hate the way a talented Year 11 kid gets ripped out of a government school via a sports scholarship then a few years later the commentators say "another product of the football factory at XXXX Grammar."

Absolutely. The private schools don't really need to do their own marketing, the media does it for them.

anyway i am sorry if i seemed i was having a go at the rich , wasnt my intention .or private schools, they are fine , do what you gotta do to give your kid the best shot in life. I know i did . I was making a comment on the system that enables the rich to corrupt the talent pathway into AFL.

If i hated rich people i'd hate every swans player as they all make more in a year than i used to make working for 5 ! We have even got a few from well off families on our list already so we arent above it , but at least Kinnear gives others a go often, more often than most others do in the recruiting business , we are very lucky .

Agree. The people who put most the most effort into development are forgotten and not validated.

                        Hi TB,

Its an excellent topic and one that should be discussed more often and openly, but as always delivery is key.. "Boys club" makes it sound like they are the Mafia or something, and anyone not rich enough will be "whacked" lol!!

                          Hi all,

Hope everyone is enjoying their newfound freedom - I know I have been! I've been up the coast for the last few weeks and booked my youngest in for specialised footy training classes under Matthew Scarlett. Wasn't sure what to expect, had heard great things from a few friends whose kids had been part of the program.. so i turn up and who should I see? Tom McCartin! Apparently he's been lending his Sundays to help out and coach. I got to have a chat with him and he mentioned he was in great knick and was planning to head back up to Sydney in a fortnight. Seemed like a friendly enough young man. He was fantastic with the kids, had a great sense of humour, a lot wittier than when he was talking to me, the other coaches and even from what I've seen in his interviews. Must be the kids that bring it out of him!!

Wonderful to see one of our players giving back to the community a bit and making himself a great model for the next generation!!

A few other off-season sightings so far that might be of interest to RWOers:

                          - Hayden McLean has joined a family friends' fitness program down in Moorabbin, focusing on speed and endurance work.

                          - I'm reliably informed a handful of Victorian-based players, at least two of who are Oli Florent and Joel Amartey, relocated their off-season fitness regimes to Sydney, to train at the club.

                          - And as some of you might've seen on the Swans' Twitter account, Logan McDonald seems to be doing some intense physical training of his own over in Perth.

Great to see the players taking things so seriously and not letting things opening up again get in the way of their hunger! We have a fired up group ready for what 2022 will bring!!

A few more off season sightings:

                          - Saw Juzzy and Zac Foot waiting for a coffee and cinnamon scroll this morning! Justin had strapping on his ankle so I couldn't resist going up and asking - he said it's totally fine, just for compression and has been doing a gym program over his break. Made specific note of trying to build his "pipes" LOL!! Wonderful to see the Swans boys keeping in touch with Foot too, who seems a great kid. He's signed with the Southport Sharks for next year, so good luck to him with his future!

                          - Young Dylan Stephens seems to be a regular at a gym called 42north in Adelaide.. posted a story on IG doing a pretty intensive work out under the guise of a trainer!

                          - And we have heard about The Chad's effort with the bat over the weekend, but his brother Corey has also posted some updates on IG of the two at the gym together. Great to see them sharing that experience and no doubt Chad is giving the lil bro a few tips!!

All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)

                                Hi bloodspirit,

No back in the city now - saw them in Richmond! If Instagram is an indicator, seems like Justin was in Sydney last night! Must've flown in later that day - busy lad! Doubt i will be having many more Swans encounters .. think most have returned to Sydney by now. Except the South and West Australian boys!! There might be a plan in place for them to all return together, possibly after the Christmas break??
