And yet people (mostly Victorians) will still bitch and moan about the academies for the "northern states" when it’s abundantly clear that they’re needed.

Can we get a comment from Maguire about this please?
Very disappointing for GC, Rankine did a lengthy press piece mid year about how much he loved it up there and he was staying. Enter the Cows with another $150k per year and it's suddenly the homesick card being played. Will cost Cows their first pick 5 (6) at least as they are not in a strong PSD threat position this year as last when we were robbed of Dawson.

The Crows are spending an awful lot of salary cap space on two players who aren’t superstars. Rankine might become one, but he’s a small forward, not a key piece of the puzzle. Dawson is an excellent player, but again, he’s not a key midfield driver.
Adelaide run the risk of being in the Collingwood or GWS situation of having to pay people to play elsewhere. They’re going to have to stump up the dollars to keep Rachele and Thilthorpe, too.
I realise there is a lot of love for Gould's potential and or a close alignment to his draft hi lights reel................but I have to say i dont think he is an answer for our back 7 rotation in the near future unless we see a significant change to his attention to detail.
At 191cm you have to be a special defender ie super quick and or elite one on one brute ...........or usually both
I suspect we are thinking in the coaching dept that if Rampe, McCartins x 2 go down there must be a better solution ?
Would Gould's future likely be tied to Melican's intentions?

If Melican does leave, Gould would have one less competitor, and think he is closer to senior opportunities.
If we express interest in Griffin Logue, as some have suggested we should, I would imagine Gould would see that as decreasing his chances.
It’s tough being on the outer. Reminds me of Brandon Jack’s book and what he has stated in interviews, eg, him death riding Heeney in his first game as he thought Heeney was taking his position.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Gould has mixed emotions when he sees one of our defenders crunched and might be wondering, does that mean I get to play seniors next week?
If he gets a hint of senior opportunities at another club, I wouldn’t be surprised if he asks to be traded, like Membrey, Nankers and Cameron before him (plus others who may have left for more opportunities but didn’t excel so are not easily remembered)..

AFL Careers are short - if someone comes along and offers first team opportunities , you cant blame them for taking it. I would , loyalty at this level is a pretty tenuous concept that AFL clubs use really only when it suits them.

Yep, mostly Victorians but often not. Communing with the mouth from the South. It's not a pretty sight I tell you.
But will Melican have a suitor? Clubs have a pretty good handle on opposition players.
It depends. Only clubs with a KPD depth problem would take him.
And sometimes developing clubs will take a 'that'll do for now' approach to fill gaps and shield kids whilst their list develops. For example, North Melbourne really only have two key defenders, Corr and McKay, and it's arguable as to whether Corr is a true tall. So whilst they draft talent underneath, if they think Melican can fill a hole for a year or two, they might do it.
Melican won't ask for a trade unless he has a suitor. He has one more year on his contract, then becomes a free agent. He has a poor injury record as well. We won't be asking for or getting much for him. It would be more to get him off the payroll.
I think Gould would feel he is next in line in the tall to medium defender stakes. I don't think he will be coming into finals consideration. So we have to convince him that his chances of getting a shot in our senior team next year is as good as any other club's offer. Early in the season is usually the time we give young players a shot to show what they can do. I think we can commit to doing this next year for Gould. He's earned that with his level of play in the VFL.

I wouldn't think they have a big payroll. Rory Sloane is probably their highest paid player. Next year will probably be his last. Walker is also our contract after next year. Both would be 34 in 2024. So they can project a couple of high salary players leaving the nest after 2023, which gives them room to operate in recruiting. players.
