That's probably true. I remember his first few games with the club when he looked very promising and appeared to have a very good career in front of him. Suffered a serious soft tissue injury and has struggled physically ever since. Sadly, I doubt we'll ever see him in the seniors again barring a serious spate of injuries.

Anyway, that's me quibbling. I think if we want Francis we just get the deal done. Hopefully it doesn't cost more than a future 3rd. Ideally they'll take our pick 75 but I suspect that is inadequate. What might be helpful is if a Weideman has a substantial pay packet that Melbourne is happy to be free of. They can use the savings to hang on to van Rooyen. All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

Isn't Francis out of contract? If that's the case, I would imagine he would then be delisted by virtue of not signing a new contract which would then mean he could be picked up as a delisted free agent?Comment

What we don't know is whether Essendon has even offered him a new contract. If they haven't / don't, he will be delisted and hence a DFA.
If they do but he doesn't want to stay, he has the option of putting himself in the National or Pre-season draft. I suspect that there would be a high likelihood of him getting through to the Swans in either draft, given he's a fringe player and has made his desire to get out of Melbourne known.Comment

I would not be playing Dodoro's games and offer just a late pick, and if Essendon refuses, then let him go to the PSD.
Great news on Harry re-signing. He made his debut in Round One, 2012 so he has been with us a long time! A highly regarded team member.Comment

With Grundy now traded to Melbourne, we are the only club that hasn't signed any free agents or traded any player in (yet)Comment

After hearing Beatson today, I will have to walk back my drafting strategy for the year. Beatson doesn't seem to rate our part of the draft too highly, especially regarding KPPs. Things look different in real life than they do on Cal Twomey's ratings sheet. Beatson even mentioned the possibility of trading one of our first rounders into next year's draft.
Assuming Francis comes in and Melican stays, we have a full complement of players across the board, and there's no great urgency to fill any particular position, especially if we are not all that keen on the selection of players available.
So for such a busy year in player movement, we remain oh so quiet. No need to follow the herd. It's another sign of confidence in our current list.Comment

Dodoro must be a nightmare to deal with. Ted Richards has spoken about what happened when he was traded to the Swans. He was told by Essendon that he wasn't a required player. When he told the club that he wanted to be traded to the Swans, Dodoro requested a 1st round pick from us! Richards couldn't believe they wanted a 1st round pick for him after telling him he wasn't required.Comment

Here's a bit of Beatson on it, and subtly implying that Dodoro will inevitably be a dickhead on the way through

Okay if Melican is staying as Kinnear is indicating then I’m not really sure why we are after Francis unless we think he can supplant one of our current tall defenders.Comment
