Just re Paddy (and I appreciate he is not the topic here) - he has said he made a mistake in his diabetes control that day. I believe him, as it was totally out of character for him.

Yes well, I think that puts paid to your reputation for cogent thought on the ruck.

A very sage comment - Thank you

However, Ladhams' best footy is pretty good and he may be our future ruck so I'm not going to be so quick to wash my hands of him. His discipline and consistency are both big issues that he needs to rectify. I don't (yet) regret bringing him.

I'm with you on this one...didn't we have a forward or two in our recent past who were a little out of control at times but ended up tempering their violent acts.

I've long been an advocate of the No Ruck setup, unless the team has a dominant ruckman. The no ruck system is always a viable option. Teams that have been forced into playing without a ruckman have often improved their game. It's one thing to lose a Max Gawn and another to lose a Ladhams, and still another level down to lose a Tom Derickx.

There may even be a negative correlation between hitouts and clearances. It's also an advantage to play a system that no other team plays, as the opposition are not well prepared for the system.

We also have at present 5 ruckmen taking up list spots. Think of how much additional talent could be coming through the system if those spots were allocated to real football players, instead of players employed to perform a task that has a negative impact on the game.

I haven't talked about this much since the implementation of the ridiculous ruck nomination rule, which greatly favours the specialised ruckman. Once this rule is repealed, I'll be back on the case again.

Big difference between an All Australian full forward, the AFLs all time leading goal kicker … and Ladhams. Plugger and BBBH were often goaded into aggression, while performing at an elite level. Ladhams is frustrated into it, while performing at a level below elite. And it’s not fair to compare the talent of the players. But Pete has to actually earn his spot in the side. And undisciplined displays of aggression won’t likely get him there.

I dont rate Ladhams ok but have you lot thought for 1 second it could just be uncontrolled aggression ! he is a ruck man , a big boy , they want to their presence felt and throw their wait around ,coaches would want him to. He is trying to do too much, ok big deal . He needs to channel it into the contest and focus on just beating whoever he is up against , not trying to scare and intimidate with off the ball rubbish ! Looks to me like a gentle giant trying to play like big Mummy . You either have it or you dont , he just makes a fool of himself trying to be something he is not !

If he’s that undisciplined, perhaps it’s a good thing he won’t be available for the finals.

I agree with this. In his interview with Gary Lyon he spoke unscripted and honestly. He explained the situation and showed genuine remorse for his actions without making excuses.

If Hickey goes down, I reckon we go with Reid and Amartey.

I like this thought. I don't think there is any other option (perhaps McLean) but I think Amarty could be a very valuable mobile ruckman if his fitness is good enough as he has a great leap and we all know he is a great contested mark!

The only worry is whether he has the aggression to compete with some of the big boys at boundary throw ins and some marking contest's?

Personally I do rate Ladhams, especially after the Hawthorn Game. In the VFL he was constantly been tugged at and blocked and held back from Contesting the ball. It managed to get one free kick. He just has to learn to deal with the bad days when nothing seems to be going your way.

Also played well against Melbourne and Richmond when we won. 4 weeks down to 3 is over the top.

Thanks for the pointer to this interview: How Paddy McCartin overcame 8 concussions and revived his AFL career | Face To Face | FOX Footy - YouTube. Unfortunately only part of the interview is available on YouTube and it doesn't deal with the king hit and suspension.

p.s. Not sure about Garry Lyon wearing sandals for the interview. But I'm glad he was comfortable.
