2016 is what hurts. Longmire is now 1 out of 4 wins in grand finals. If we had rightly won 2016, it would be 2 / 4

2016 hurts the least for me, because at least we played pretty well and had something to cheer for. We got shafted by the umpires, but I'm not certain we would have won anyway. We weren't awesome.

Yesterday was the worst. At least as abject as 2014, but @@@@tier because it was a nightmare relived. Like Neil, I hadn't really countenanced that we could be so bad again. I actually thought we'd win. Maybe the players did too. It's hard to believe it could happen again. But only five players yesterday played in 2014, and John.

I really like John and he's an excellent coach, but his grand final record is bad and holding him back from being great. Ultimately, this is, in large part, his responsibility, and his words during the press conference suggests he feels that. In the 2014 press conference he was prickly; in yesterday's the failure hung heavily.

First line is as expected. Otherwise I think your post reflects the kid in the toy shop who sees only the bright, shiny new look toys. Great hopes for the fun they’re going to bring. But dismisses, because they’re only kids, the burnished, much loved ones at home who continue to provide what is required. Fine for the new guys to earn their slots. Not fine to dismiss the valued, efficient guys who got us here. Time and effort will sort all this; it’s not a matter of discarding old for shiny untried new. And shows little respect for the incumbents.

Its not disrespectful , yesterday showed to me that that is not our premiership midfield , so something needs to change , thats all . Move on though as we wont agree on it . They will stew on this one all off season

What hurts the most is how these other clubs are all getting their fairytales . Danger and Selwood flag , that Pickett debut for Tigers , Bulldogs back in 16, and we keep missing out . We deserve it as much as any of them , but they still have to be won and they dont win themselves

2005 was our fairytale. We got it. We deserved it. We’ve been a powerhouse since (in terms of regularly playing finals) so the hunter has become the hunted.

What needs to change is games into young bodies. That will (hopefully) come with time if we can keep this mostly young group together & add as required

With that attitude we never have to worry about about a premiership hangover.

We are, mainly, passionate supporters who watch the game for entertainment.

We are not the one of the playing group or support staff who have exceeded expectations all year. None of us were out on the ground yesterday hoping the earth would swallow them up. So back off with your pathetic snipes from the sidelines. You have only an emotional interest in what is a game for all of us supporters. The professionals will be hurting like no tomorrow from the result yesterday

Classy of Chris Scott to recognise Swans supporters for staying for the presentation “even though they didn’t have to”.

Ramps, I appreciate that in your articulate speech that you feel the team let the supporters down. It sounded like you choked back a tear as you said it. Not a good result today, but for session 2022, you didn’t let this supporter down. If, prior to round one you had told me that you could guarantee that I could watch my beloved Swans in a Grand Final, but couldn’t guarantee me a win, I would have taken that offer.

I have bad days at work some days. But I’m never not trying my best for my patients. I will always believe that, regardless of the result, my Swans are always giving their best. Sometimes it’s not good enough. Sometimes, like today, it’s not good enough by a long way. But I will still appreciate your efforts, Sydney, in the context of a difficult game, a surprisingly successful season overall, and a lifetime of joy despite the results sometimes. Football isn’t always about the win and the loss as far as the joy it gives me. I get joy from the Swans in many ways. Today hurts the supporters and members. But I’m sure it hurts the players and coaches more. Much more.

And like 1996, like 2006, like 2014 and 2016, the pain will pass for me - eventually - and I’ll look forward to my next opportunity to cheer you on in a grand final. Because 2005 and 2012 were two of the best days of my life. And I didn’t have to wait 72 years for the joy.

Grand Finals aren’t easy to make. And they’re even harder to win (just ask our star studded sides of the 1933-1936 who, despite fielding the best players in the competition won just 1 premiership from 4 straight grand finals). This young side achieved a lot this year. I can only hope they continue their improvement over the following years for more chances.

'Falling away so badly'...what, in the last six quarters of football for the whole season, a season where we came third and made the GF....and that needs a 'rebuild'? Please....

No, the Cats are not an 81pt better team than us but they were today.....just today.

Spot on. We were the youngest GF team in the history of the game, with 13 players 23 or less.
They’ll be bigger and stronger next year.

I was down on the fence not far from where this incident happened. He kicked it. He kicked it effin 20 metres. I lost my mind at this point. Of course we would have lost anyway but the moment this happened I knew we were 100% screwed.

Right in front of us; he definitely kicked it.
Not why we lost, and Geelong certainly didn’t need any help, but Meredith and Stevic pulled out a classic performance.

Selfishly I just desired the amazing euphoria of being at the G for one more Grand Final win (no one does it quite like Melbourne - notwithstanding Albo is correct “Turn back the boats”.
I was there in 1996, 2005, 2006, missed 2012 (bugger), 2014, 2016 and yesterday.
Now I’m in the Gallery trying to understand Picasso, which is about the same as trying to fathom the smashing we received and the absence of a fight back yesterday.
I had booked to go to the After party at the Crown, but I was just too knackered, too forlorn (must have been so tough for the players).
It’s a stunning spring day in Melbourne and riding my bicycle along the brown river is therapeutic.
The players and staff need a holiday from it all.
I need the winner of the Melbourne Cup to recoup some losses, however thanks to my good friends in Richmond for fab accommodation and to the security at the G who didn’t notice me slip through from the awful standing room (I’m not tall) Tik to a vacant disabled seat next to Lisa from Albury who was going for The Swans (but supports Carlton).
Well done Cats, way way way too good yesterday .
I thought we’d win by 17.
