I think it will possibly between Gould and Francis to push into the side in the likely event that Blakey doesn't start the season. Might depend on how they both perform in the practice matches.

It's just a possibility. Some media are saying they are expecting he will have recovered in time to play. He's meant to play the practice match this Friday, which I find surprising. We'll see I guess.

At Tuesdays training, they split into red(seniors) and green(reserves) and played about 20-25 minutes of medium intensity match play. Blakey, Reid, Franklin, Amartey, Magor and McLean were all involved. So some of those guys might be further along than we think.

Though there were a few guys that played in the intra club on Saturday that sat it out. I assume they were sore and had knocks rather than any new injuries.

'Blakey, Reid, Franklin, Amartey, Magor and McLean were all involved'

This means we hardly have an injury three and a half weeks out from R1 at Heritage Stadium

Re the captaincy and leadership group, I’m very happy for Hayward. His year was excellent last year. He’s never going to be a high possession winner, but he does a truck load of selfless work on and off the ball. I’m surprised to see Heeney there, not because I think he’d be poor in the role, but his earlier reticence, so good on him for stepping up.

As for Gulden, I wouldn’t be worried at all. He’s coming into his third year. There’s plenty of time, and he’s as assured of captaining the club one day as Mills. Lock it in.

I think Clarke and Melican are not fully back yet, they are doing a lot of additional boundary running. Sheather is also not fully involved, it might be related to his surgery from last year. Hickey seems to still be on his individual program and was not with the main group yet. Konstanty seems to be on a light load since the first intra club. Wicks still has a brace on his shoulder.

And a few players seem to have had knocks in the 2nd intra club. And I expect that will continue to happen after each trial match.

Now the pre season gets serious with actual games against Brisbane and Carlton, and we will see where and if he fits into our team.
He played quite well in the vision of the scratch match. Seemed to hold his own at CHB.

no Konstanty in either team and no mention of the reason for that in the Swannies press release.

I reckon Konstanty and Magor are injured. Ditto Melican.

Bit of a concern that Hickey has strained his calf and is likely to miss the first few weeks of the season; while Ladhams has tendinitis, won't be playing this week and is to be assessed next week. Round one debut for McAndrew?

Will it be enough to settle the debate on the insignificance of the ruckman? Depends on the results, I guess.

Looking forward to seeing Gould, Francis and the 1st and 2nd year players. Owen and Edwards should see some reasonable time.

I am pretty sure we have options other than a developing ruck. Amartey will be ready, maybe Ladhams. Even if Andrews is the only option we will have Reid as a back up. He seems to have learned how to ruck in the last year or so.

Paps, Fox & Blakey will all be ready for round 1, it looks like. I am glad to see some of the speculative players getting a hit out. speaking of hit out McAndrew and Owens will have their work cut out on two very experienced rucks. But then again, all the Lions team picked here are experienced except Ashcroft, Tunstill & maybe Sharp.

Be interesting to see where they play Edwards and vickery if they play. Both can play forward or back, hold down a key. But Edwards is also a ruck. Apparently he has been going well in pre-season.

Vickery is 181cm and weighs 72kg, so I'm not sure about holding down a key Wolfy. And I've not heard of him as anything other than a defender come to that.

I dunno, if I could be arsed starting a 'predictions for the season' thread, I'd probably have McAndrew as my 'surprise packet'.
