It helps to examine what North Melbourne requires.
Stephens is not the only player seeking a trade to North Melbourne. Zac Fisher (Carlton) is also seeking a trade to North Melbourne, and Twomey assesses his value as "around a second round" pick. That's the consensus for the value of Stephens as well. North Melbourne holds pick 2, 14 and 19 in this year's draft but lacks a second-round pick.
It's possible that North Melbourne splits one of its later first-round picks for multiple selections in the second round so it can trade for both players. A possible trade could be picks 14 and 40 for 23 and Stephens (valuing Stephens as equivalent to pick 25).
I think it's more likely that North Melbourne will trade with another club for picks. Melbourne has five useful picks in the first two rounds and that will increase to six once they get a pick for Grundy. Picks 5, 13, 25, 33 and 39 (plus possibly pick 31 as well) will be of interest to North Melbourne. Pick 14 for 31 (Sydney currently holds that) and 33 would be a fair trade, as part of a larger trade.
A possible trade:
Grundy to Sydney and pick 31 to Melbourne, picks 31 and 33 to North Melbourne and pick 14 to Melbourne, pick 31 back to Sydney for Stephens, pick 33 to Carlton for Zac Fisher.
* North Melbourne gains Stephens and Fisher and loses pick 14.
* Sydney gains Grundy and loses Stephens.
* Melbourne gains pick 14 and loses Grundy and pick 33.
* Carlton gains pick 33 and loses Fisher.Comment

Problem I see is Senior list spots. Fox, MacAndrew, Wicks and Sheather are all rookies who will need to be promoted to Senior List if retained. Think we need a clear out to make space. I expect Clarke, Sheather, Gould, Rankin. Hall-Kahan and Owen to be delisted. Brutal but necessary. Reid to be retained if medical is OK.Comment

AFL, A.F.L., AFLW, A.F.L.W., AFL, AFL Womens, aussie rules, australian rules, football, stats, australian football league, adelaide crows, brisbane lions, carlton blues, collingwood magpies, fremantle dockers, gold coast suns, geelong cats, greater western sydney giants, GWS Giants, north melbourne kangaroos, melbourne demons, richmond tigers, st kilda saints, western bulldogs, west coast eagles, VFLW, VFL Womens, VFL
I think the Swans have had a fair few player management issues in recent years. Just on the current list, we did a poor job in not finding an alternative position for Gould sooner and playing HHK in a death zone HFF position most of the time.
Of the many comments on HHK, I have yet to see one with a specific criticism, like "too slow" or "poor disposal". There are little things about HHK, like no-look handballs to an overlapping player that pins the defender to launch an attack, which is more like what Scott Pendlebury might do than a VFL player.
From what I've seen so far in the post season, the Swans are going all out for a premiership next year, and are ready to sacrifice the future to get more ready made players for 2024. It's a change of tact that I don't support, but can understand why it's being done. As another poster commented, we are looking to copy Geelong and Collingwood to become more trade-driven and have a deeper, more mature list.
Digging deeper, part of the change in list strategy stems from having such an unlucky year with injury, not only to our mature players, but to so many young developing players. Konstanty, Vickery, Mitchell, Sheather, Shelfrick and Roberts have all had injury-interrupted seasons, seriously setting back team development. Add to that the disappointed in Stephens, and it's little wonder why the brain trust at the Swans are ready to abandon the slower development route for one that might yield more immediate results.
To think how different things might have been had we retained Dawson and Aliir, and taken Serong instead of Stephens in the 2019 draft.
So it goes.Last edited by Ludwig; 7 October 2023, 02:30 PM.Comment

Twomey now reporting we’ve dropped off the chase for Dow, which suggests we’re closing in on Adams
Inside Trading: Dogs look at flag Dee, Saints close on Blue, latest on Giant
Re Stephens, I’d take 19 and 40 for Stephens and 22 - then see if we can throw 11 and 19 at Geelong for 7. (There might need to be a little something back to smooth it out but we’re giving up a bit to get nearer to high end talent).
If rates him around 35, and gets us up the draft without asking Norf to drop too far. I’d love to find a way to get our hands on 14, but Norf aren’t going to give that up easily. For them it’s not about the points, it’s access to quality.
And it still leaves us flexibility over this year and next year for Grundy and Adams, and late chum for Cleary.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

HHK only just turned 20 and has a lot of physical development ahead of him . He wod be massively unlucky to be delisted. Was regularly the most reliable player in the 2s in what was a losing side on most occasions.
Magor is only 19 and has excellent skills, also still growing.

Re Hamling, I think I’ve realised the stumbling block I have on him.
HE’S A MEMBER OF THE 2016 DOGS FLAG TEAM, FFS!!!

That squad just might give a good run at the flag if we can send the moon boots to the moon. An investment in an overflow rehab facility near the SCG could pay off well with the fragile bodies we've collected. A lot of finger crossing should be on display.Comment

Wow weee
Interesting insight below that would include Jordon.
On the afl website now in the article with the below heading:
“Dogs look at flag Dee, Saints close on Blue, latest on Giant”
“The AFL currently has a detailed points-based formula that decides free agency compensation, which considers a range of factors including the financial terms of the deal and the age of the player moving clubs among others.
To trigger end-of-second round compensation banding, the player must have received an offer within the top 50 per cent of paid players for that season.
Clubs are notified of the potential compensation for restricted free agents within 24 hours of the paperwork being lodged, while they then have three days to match any rival bids. – Riley Beveridge“

We can just squeeze in Adams and 2 draft picks and still keep Reid, HHK and Magor, if we delist Gould and Rankin. I think that's the best outcome overall. We get some quality AFL ready players for Longmire's 2024 flag run, and still keep the best of our rookies.

Luddy does that include Grundy TBC?
Harry, Hickey, Hayward, Florent and Gulden (in his case, for now) wouldn’t have been on a lot more. He’s probably signed somewhere in between the first and second batch.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

That's 6 AFL games...apparently he played a full WAFL season this year.....so fully fit at the moment. I'll trust the club on this one.Comment

Does it also mean that with compo pick that went from the AFL to the Deemons for a Jordon - that it is possible Melbourne May actually get a better pick than we might get for Stephen’s trading?
That sort of doesn’t seem far if that is how it plays out?"be tough, only when it gets tough"
