It’s going to fascinating to see how it all plays out

If we only want two in the draft and are not Re jigging a player from our main list to rookie etc than it it might not be quite as exciting

If we do want 3 from the top40 next week then it will be very interesting

Not sure MacAndrew is ready yet, but the time has well and truly come for Ladhams to step up. We know he can play but needs to show some maturity.

ABC Online has posted an overview of the likely players under consideration for the draft for each club: AFL draft 2023 club by club — who your team could be circling to become its next star

For Sydney, the article names the players Ollie Murphy, Connor O'Sullivan and Koltyn Tholstrup, (also Caiden Cleary but that's obvious).

Yes, I tend to think that one of the reasons why Owen was delisted, is that there's an intention to replace him on the rookie list with May.

I'm actually a little surprised that May isn't more highly regarded. I suspect it's because there's now some sort of preference for athletic rucks, and while May has no problems getting from contest to contest, he doesn't appear to have much top end speed. So, he's very unlikely to become the next Luke Jackson, but I think there's a good chance that he'll develop into the next Jarred Witts. He's a massive unit, who's possibly still growing. He has good skills in close and often gets away effective handballs. He's a good kick, being able to both hit short targets and roost the ball long. And most importantly, he wins a lot of ruck contests.

I've said before I probably started the year in the first camp and finished in the second.

In some ways, it reminds me of Josh Dunkley coming into his draft year. The view was he was tough as nuts, but a bit slow and a poor kick. Leaving aside all the stuff around his dad and whether or not Josh wanted to come to Sydney, I know the Swans viewed him as a bit of a plodder. What turned out to be the case of course was that his strong point - winning contested ball - is the essence of the game, and he went away and worked on the rest and developed into a terrific two-way player, excellent mark, and more than adequate kick. Given Cleary has the same critical skill of winning the ball in tight, and seems professional as hell, we should match any reasonable pick and back ourselves and him to work on his 'weaknesses'.
Yes, I think you've summed up the split views on Cleary well, so I'll just add that he might also be suffering from a perception, that inside mids should now preferably range in size from the 187cm of Dustin Martin to the 191cm of Patrick Cripps. Which leaves some people thinking that at 182cm, he's too small to be a genuine at the coalface type player, but doesn't quite have the tricks of a top outside midfielder. Which tends to ignore the fact that the 181cm Mitchell and the 177cm Neale have won Brownlows playing as inside mids.

And curiously, I think that both camps are right. In that I feel he'll develop into a very good player, who's worth a late first round pick, but I suspect that he won't get a bid until later and we'll pick him up for a bargain price.

There's probably a bit of that too and I get the value of the explosive players, but recent history tells us you need both. People tend to chronically underrate how important Dion Prestia was to Richmond's three-peat - just a superstar, particularly in '17 and '19. Put a ball into serious heat, and he was usually the one who got first hands on it. Sheldrick reminds me a little of him in the ways he plays and positions his body to advantage at the contest.

                  Lachie Neale vs Paddy Cripps

Fascinating how u break that down Re who is on top

                  177cm inside mid vs 195cm

Both have a humongous influence on contested game

It would be great to have Cleary join us and hopefully he'll be another Academy success story,

                    but

our recruiters should have a baseline under which we may not match a bid. A mature Academy system will be one that feeds the odd player out to other clubs if they really want them and are prepared to bid for them. Interstate clubs will of course be aware that the go home factor may always rear its head at some stage.

                      There's probably three levels:

                      1. Bid is not matched. Any bid more than a few picks before our first-round pick will fall in that category. I can see a match happening if it was one or two picks before our first-round pick (we may then trade out three points-bearing draft picks to trade back into the second round of the draft).
                      2. Bid may or may not be matched, perhaps depending on who else is still available, prospects for pick trading and the size of any points deficit. If a points deficit is not too great, we will match regardless. The level is likely to cut in at a point where our first-round pick next year will not fall to below our end of first round pick (but this is just my speculation).
                      3. Bid is matched. This will definitely happen if the picks we have will pay for the bid, but may occur a pick or two earlier, with a small deficit.

Similar guidelines may apply to any club's Academy or father-son bidding, not just Cleary specifically.

Another draft analysis on who we may get with our first pick, with Clearly being a given we'll match bid.

Versatile Tassie defender James Leake, WA running half back Riley Hardeman and WA ruckman Mitch Edwards being our possible targets.

Suggests we could trade down for Micth Edwards considering he's not expected to.go till the early 20's.

I'm hoping for James Leake if he's still on the board come our first pick. Interesting that KPD Ollie Murphy has slipped down the latest draft rankings into the 2nd round.

I will add one more Richmond player who would now be in the top 5 at the Tigers. Liam Baker who was a relatively late pick and is a very good player, probably similar to Cleary. He obviously slipped down the draft board because of his size.

I’m looking to AI for answers lol ????

In the realm of football, where legends are made,
There stood Kinnear, a man unafraid.
He took a path less traveled, with a vision in his mind,
To lead dwarves to his club and leave doubters behind.

With the Dow as his ally, he built a strong foundation,
Navigating the ups and downs with determination.
Through the twists and turns of the beautiful game,
He forged a path of player success, earning acclaim.

Together they ventured, on this road unknown,
Facing challenges and obstacles, yet never alone.
With each victory and defeat, they grew stronger still,
Their bond unbreakable, a testament to their will.

Through the highs of triumph and the lows of defeat,
They stayed true to their purpose, never accepting defeat.
For in the road less traveled, they found their true worth,
A journey of resilience, a testament to their birth.
