Buyer beware for HH. The Giants had a forward line of Richardi and cadman, and still HH wasnt moved forward. Not much of a swing man.
It looks to me that HH is currently playing a hard defensive role down back, which allowes Taylor and Buckley play a little looser and intercept.
I've always thought of a swing man, as a move to make when the alternative is losing, which hasn't happened to the neighbours in a while.

I agree that Riccardi (a stopgap) and Cadman (a tyro) aren't up to it. If Hogan was available (or Preuss) one would be in the 2's. But both Brown and Green play tall.

No. They have had significant problems with player retention. They have traded away several star players, for whom they have received first round picks.

GWS draft history, last eight years. (You have to go back to 2014 to find players drafted by the Giants in the first round who are no longer on any club's list.)

First-round picks, Academy picks in first round, number of players still with club.

      2022: 3, 1, 3.
      2021: 2, 0, 2.
      2020: 3, 0, 2. (Tanner Bruhn, Geelong)
      2019: 2, 1, 2.
2018: 3, 0, 1. (Jye Caldwell, Essendon; Jackson Hately, Adelaide)
      2017: 1, 0, 0. (Aiden Bonar, North Melbourne)
      2016: 4, 3, 2. (Tim Taranto, Richmond; Will Setterfield (A), Essendon)
      2015: 3, 3, 1. (Jacob Hopper (A), Richmond; Matthew Kennedy (A), Carlton)

Giants' first-round picks in last 8 drafts who are still with the Giants: 13 (5 Academy). Other clubs: 8 (3 Academy).

So overall, they have had a lot of first-round picks, but nearly half of them have left the club and some of these first-round picks are Academy players. If Academy players are excluded, eight players are still with the club who were drafted by the Giants with first-round picks in the open draft from 2015 - one per year on average.

In the same time period, we've had 10 first-round picks (3 Academy), 9 still with club (3 Academy).

So if GWS do make the top8 this season or higher on the ladder vs the Sydney Swans in 2023….how do we interpret that data?

I am genuinely concerned that we might not be able to recruit the missing pieces down back and or ruck and or key forward to provide us with the greatest probability to round out our squad and be a true top4 team.

        I like Macca
        I like Joel

But I do worry that we are off the pace with our squad to be a top4 team in a window where we have a lot of other areas covered.

The best performing teams have been able to make this happen ie trade in the missing pieces when they are in a window

I look in the mirror and I don’t think that line of thinking is “chicken little sky falling in”

Unless we recruit trade very very well this off season I feel we will not get back to a top4 team for a few seasons.

You're over thinking it Auntie. The difference between good swans (2022) and bad swans (2023) is a dominant ruckman. One by the name of Tom Hickey.

All effort must be put towards getting a gun ruckman.

          - - - Updated - - -

The same as the difference between bad GWS (2022) and good GWS (2023) is that Kieran Briggs became that gun ruckman.

Barry i do love you have veins of steel....... but i dont hold the same unwavering clarity to simplify our numerous 2024 challenges into one key area.

Barry, I genuinely worry we will be coming back to page 111 on this thread and revisiting it for all the wrong reasons.

I truly believe we will come up short on what is needed to be a top 4 team in 2024, especially considering all evidence from 2022 was showing us to have a trajectory to challenge again in 2023.

The required 2024 mature key position players, so desperately needed, may evade us and sadly leave us scratching below the window ledge, while it is right in front of us.

My concern is that there are several other clubs on the same march rebuilding and maybe able to attract more than what we can to fill crucial gaps for their best 22.

For me 2023 was a critical opportunity year while we had the likes of Bud, Hickey and Paddy..........their 2022 form was strong but much less so in 2023.

In 2024 who will forefil their critical roles........ so we can jump back into the top4?

Agree with you Auntie. We definitely need to address the deficiencies in the ruck and defence, and this means we have to be active in the free agency and trade market as a start.

Bad news folks: I hope like hell I’m wrong, but my understanding is that Himmelberg’s manager has told other clubs it’s just down to fine print now and unless something goes queer, he’s staying at GWS.

When I read the Giants were at over 700k for 5yrs, i did think staying in Sydney and moving to the Swans was very remote.

                  Hopefully Naughton or Ugle Hagan

Rumours on Foxfooty website we have expressed an interest in 28 year old UFA Matt Crouch.

And that story about HH being about to sign comes from Toby Greene, allegedly.

Not to mention Roberts that has shown some promise in the centre.

                              Yep for sure

Would like to see Errol a bit more outside when these guys come on a bit.

Can see Errol ending up broken like Hannas at his size playing too much inside

I'm probably going to be laughed at but I am beginning to think Errol may one day be the finest rover we've had since Bobby.
