Times have changed. I won't argue the point that midfielders are generally more flexible and there are more positions available for midfielders to play, but this also means that the pool of players is larger. The fact that when KPPs go bust, there are fewer alternatives for them, but that's all the more reason to make sure you have them in place. If it's broken, it's harder to fix. A KPP problem can take 5+ years to fix. A midfielder problem can be fixed in one post season.

The Swans, Saints, Pies and Tigers all have KPP injury problems. All but Richmond are high up the ladder so far. Can a small defence group beat a tall forward line? There is growing evidence that this may be the case. I'm interested in seeing how this plays out.

Stevo come on.......the AFL is big enough for players to move clubs.

The success that Tom Mitchell has brought to the Pies inside mid problem (now solved) and Dawso playing just absolutely elite gives me goose bumps

I'm also not looking forward to watch the big Crayfish destroy us in the ruck for whatever team picks him up mid-season... I would love it to be us but I very much doubt it will be.

I know we gave him every opportunity but I'm baffled we could hold onto him for so long and then delist him this past off season just as he gets himself right to play! How could our medico's completely miss the mark and a VFL side get it so right???

Mid Season Draft five weeks away, no list vacancy yet and we won't have an early pick. Every MSD there's a handful of good players selected.

Hawthorn currently have first pick in the MSD and look to have some tough games in the lead up so may solidify that pick. West Coast the other side anchored to the bottom.

Hawks poor form is very pleasing, we currently hold picks 19 & 38 in the ND courtesy of last years pick swap with them - nice one :-)

He still doesn’t do enough around the ground, even at VFL level

That is the issue with the "Tap Artiste" type ruckman.

FWIW I prefer my main ruck to be of the "Meat Axe" type.
                    Competative, by which I mean
Combative, by which I mean just this side of the
                    Bellicose/Belligerant line.

If you play 2 rucks, then I'd be happy for the other one to be a Leaper, an Awkward, An Athlete or a Tap Artiste - but the Meat Axe is my preference.

Yes Mummy was probably the greatest Swans meat-axe of all time. But I also admired the bulldozing work of Ken Boyd, Fred Way and Darren Jolley.
I currently enjoy Mensa Ladhams and Ally Morphet

In hindsight, why did we sign Buddy, Reid and Hickey this year, I don’t think that decision has helped us at all, sometimes I think we need to make harder decisions, all those players have been great for us, but there was always going to be doubts on the 3 of them making it thru another year

Reid has been the great survivor. Not sure any other club would have persevered for so long. Missed a massive amount of footy during his career.

Don't disagree re: Buddy (though he may still have his moments).

Do disagree about Hickey - he has had an injury plagued career, but if the first handful of weeks have shown, Ladhams is far from a finished product - and if we get Hickey right, he still has plenty to offer for a couple of seasons, as he hasn't played the huge numbers of games other ruckman have by his age (so his broader body isn't quite so banged up.)

On the fence about Reid. There is no doubt our best footy last year had him fit and firing. But I do wonder if we will see him at all this year (earliest after the bye was the last update I saw). We desperately need to find someone of his ilk to replace him however. I think plenty of us have our eye on someone across town who would be a perfect fit, but who knows if that is realistic or not.

I would also love to see us signing Himmelberg. Let's hope he wants a change and to stay in Sydney.
