State league players are highly unlikely to feature in the senior side due to a lower fitness level, a lack of understanding of game plans and familiarity with team mates.

MSD has become a no cost way to grab a young player who may develop in future seasons into a permanent player. It gives bottom of the table sides an extra chance to find a future player. Last year it was said Norf drafted a player likely to be top 10 in last years ND.

HHK is a great example of MSD.

Unless the MSD allows player movement of currently listed players, and I think that's what clubs want, then it will always be a future looking draft rather than a plug current list gap draft.

All that said, Reid will almost certainly be put on the LTI list and we'll have about pick 8 in the MSD. Must be about time for lists of likely MS draftees to start appearing in the media.

Yep, the obvious move for us.
So sad for Sammy- is this the end of the road? I can’t see us extending now given his age, though the one year on, one year off rule may still apply!

He will retire quietly before the season finishes

Hopefully. We have been extremely tolerant and patient with him. Obviously a great clubman.

I agree with you Auntie on Hayden. When the ball hits the ground the opposition small forwards would run rings around him, and so would most of the key forwards

I am not so sure Blood Fever. The fact that they have operated immediately may suggest they will wait until the end of the year before making a decision.
While Sam is certainly injury prone, he still can play, as he demonstrated last year. He is still in his early thirties, and his not lost any of his pace.
One thing the Swans lack at the moment is experienced players, so in my opinion it would be wise to make the decision at year end.
There is also likely to be a number of players in the same boat.
A lot will also depend on who is available via free agency.

Can see your point but if he gets another year, he should be nicknamed Houdini.

Good point but to be fair he had wraps for the 'future'.

I would be ok re-signing Reid on very low contract based on games played.

He can be first team player if fit either as a regular or to cover for injury/suspension. Alternative to provide structure and experience in the VFL to develop the younger players.

Give the midfielders someone to kick to etc.

It is not as if keeping him on a low contract is going to prevent us signing another player or having enough to extend Gulden and Warner.

But if he is wanting $300K plus, I would be saying thanks for the memories.

If (I suspect a very big ‘if’) Reid were to be given another contract, then the more appropriate comparisons might be Alex Johnson (repeated contracts that Alex sadly couldn’t fulfil as a player) and similarly Sam Naismith (though maybe Sam N might have come good this year if we had persisted for one more contract).

I think there's a high probability that we will lose both McCartin brothers due to concussion and will have to construct a new backline for next year. It won't be easy and could put us out of contention for several years. I often say that football is a game of luck. I think luck will play a major role on how we go the next few years.

Reed Van Huisstede? I thought he was quite promising at academy level, but he then didn't get much game time in our VFL team. At the start of 2022 he signed for North Adelaide and has played almost every game since then as a key defender.
