2023 List Management

Both coaches commented how the footy was like a cake of soap for much of the game, so how about we cut the players a bit of slack. Also the need to cover injuries has repercussions beyond those players who are out. It means other players have to play different roles that affect the game plan. This is especially true of Blakey, Fox, Errol, Papley to name a few. Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

I think trying to get a marquee player in the off season for big dollars is not the answer. Tippet and Franklin took big slices of the salary cap and we can't afford to try to shuffle the deck chairs again for an extended time. I am happy to take a couple of seasons of mid table finishes to solidify our list with astute drafting.Comment

I thought it a slightly strange, but clearly topical turn of phrase (given the proximity of the Pride game).Comment

GWS seem to adopting an interesting strategy with list management. They identify a player in the top 3 draft prospects who is likely to stay in Sydney and then trade picks to get a 1st or 2nd round pick to take him. They might trade 3 or 4 picks to get 1 good pick. Then the rest of their recruiting is via academy or picking up fringe players from other clubs.
It actually sounds sensible for a northern club.Comment

I made the point about the long, long term danger of shuffling the salary cap deckchairs last month on this thread, Tom Harley recently described this process in terms of being non-binary AFL trade news, rumours, whispers: Collingwood Magpies interest in Harry Himmelberg, Essendon Bombers, clubs interested, Sydney Swans, latest

I think the assumption of shuffling deck chairs when u bring in a big time player is only half true
The absence of a significant game winning player means that you are equally shuffling deck chairs just with a different strategy
I mean we are all in the same salary cap and they are used almost always to the max
Both scenarios require enormous success to valid them"be tough, only when it gets tough"

We need to get Ollie back into the mids. Playing inside/outside, like Gulden.
That means we need to trade or draft some good HB flankers. A running flanker who is an actual back, like an Idon. The Hawks guy Jiath? Someone like this. With Buddy, Reid and Hickey (I believe he will retire) retiring, we have space. We move on Clarke & Cunningham and maybe a few more and we have plenty of cap and player space.

Hope I'm wrong, but Francis doesn't look the goods to me. Lacks intensity and physicality and although he is good aerially, when the ball hits the ground he looks ordinary.Comment

So you’re not allowed to say anything negative about Longmire, but you can bag individual players?
I completely disagree with your rant, it’s not Francis’ fault we’ve got so many injuries. If our backline wasn’t undermanned he woundnt have to play as a close checking defender.
He doesn’t have to play physically or intensely because he’s doing a great job down back, so what if we lose? Apparently he’s a fantastic club man and all of the players love him. Who else would do his role better? An untried draftee?
You’re obviously not a true supporter and you’re embarrassing yourselfComment

That's the problem when a club has a lot of injuries to a particular type of player. Some of the ones who are left must be played in unfamiliar roles."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment
