Pretty much all speculation in the media Re players and picks is overblown to sucker us in.

I’m sure we have 25 options Re defenders and clubs on the other side of the table know this.

Yet we do need a strong marking experienced key defender and a ruck and a tall goal kicking forward to replace what we have most likely lost.

      So we have a fair few talls that have started to feature a little more in our Senior team and a fair few where it is very hard to work out their most likely trajectory;

Ladhams - 20 games last two seasons at the Swans and 7th season in AFL. Should be fighting for a best 22 spot next season but I think we need more from a no1 ruck.

Amartey - 6th season at the Swans. 23 games total in Snrs but almost half of those games have now occurred in season 2023 and started to look a little likely up front as a KPF

McLean - 16 games player this season and fifth season now at the Swans and appears to be a ruck utility more so.

Melican - 9th season at the Swans 60 games player and snuck in 7 games this season before injury struck again sadly. Averaging 7 games per season and the question is can we keep Reid and Melican given their injury woes?

Reid - nil player in 2023 but had a cracking 2022 season and turns 32yrs of age in December 2023.

Francis - 11 games played for the swans in 2023 and has another season with us.

Buller - 1 game played in 2023 and will be fascinating to track next season.

Arnold - nil games played in 2023 and I’m not sure

Gould - 4 games in 2023 and now his 4th season at the Swans. It better click in season 5.

Owen - nil played in 2023 and only very young as a FF and or Ruck so plenty of time to develop.

Edwards - nil played in 2023 but looks likely over time as a key defender

McAndrew - 3rd season and 2 games played in 2023. I like what I see with Stretch being a long term project for us. 23yrs of age and the next season or two could level jump to be a genuine challenger but I suspect will be a fair way off the pace of what we need right now.

Hickey - I’m guessing this could be it if we find another solution at trade time this season?

Foxy I haven’t included as a tall despite he playing on some talls because I feel he will be in and around the best 22 for a couple more seasons just like Rampe.

TDK is about to re-sign with the Blues. Does that mean we’ve lost interest or weren’t interested in the first place?

Silvagni still yet to be offered a contract, just saying

In any case, GWS almost always have salary cap issues, which is why other clubs find it so easy to pick off players. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if there weren't less listed players at GWS than there are ex GWS players on other clubs lists. So we wouldn't have to do a Buddy type deal. Was that who you were referring to when you mentioned ruining our salary cap?
They traded for Cameron because he was restricted free agent (like HH) and GWS were going to match the salary.

If we want HH then he will either cost us in significant salary cap space or he will cost us in a trade. My point is that he is not necessarily “free” as many suggest.

I’m of the opinion that we have a core group of quality players that can keep us contending for the next 3-5 years. Therefore, I’m happy to spend some of our draft capital to increase our chances in that time even if that is at the cost of performance in 5 or 6 years time when our 2023 draft picks mature.

Barrass makes us better for next 3-4 years. HH makes us better for then next 4-5 years (but not as much as Barrass). Naughton makes us better for the next 6-8 years (more than Barrass).

What Auntie Gerald said about media speculation. When it comes to trading players the Swans have always played their cards close to their chest, so whatever the confabulating footy media has to say is all cobblers until it happens.

Most likely targeting a contracted player we haven’t even been linked with . I wonder what players have a year to run on their contract [emoji848]

It is most definitely true that the Swans don’t leak anything. However, in trade talk, there are two teams involved (plus player managers). Swans can’t keep all of them quiet too.

True but not apples to apples. Buddy was an unrestricted free agent not a trade.

                        Mmm. Re Dylan.

I love how reporters say “former #5” pick when you’ve been in the system for a few years. It’s as meaningless as telling people your year 12 score once you’ve been in the workforce - no employer cares. It’s what you do once you’re drafted that counts. And clubs can get it wrong, picking someone way higher than they probably should have been. Imagine trying to recycle former #1 pick, Richmond’s, Richard Lounder, based on his premium draft selection in 1987, as opposed to his forgettable 4 match career which started and ended in 1989?

By the time you’re mid-way through the first round of the draft, it can be a crap shoot. Sure, many educated wins, but ill-informed busts too. Dyl can always feel proud he was taken pick 5. At the trade table a few years on, it’s worth less than the seats they’re sitting on, if they’re comfy.

And Lounder, you’ll always be a number one pick. No one can take that away from you. It just might not be worth much on your resume.
