The welcome to country ceremony happens at the start of FOOTBALL finals matches.....how does this discussion not constitute football talk?

I understand it's you're job as a mod to stop things getting out of hand and becoming offensive but if we're all on the same page regarding someone who denigrates this ceremony, which we seem to be, where's the problem?

No one has bobbed up to defend Sam Newman.....surely you're not Liz?

I very much doubt that Liz would defend Newman, but we have strayed a little from the relevance of his disgusting behaviour to the current finals series.

Having said that, it's hard to avoid politics when a (sort of) football person is being so openly political, in the most vile way imaginable. And the fact remains that welcome to country has become as important a part of the introduction to finals games as the national anthem, if not more so.

On the whole, it seems to have been embraced by the public, if a little unenthusiastically, and in these times when it is becoming so difficult to achieve even modest progress on indigenous affairs, we need to take every opportunity to expose people like Newman and their enablers in the "angertainment" (thanks Malcolm) media for what they are.

I'd never been to a big "Collingwood Crowd" game at the MCG till last night. I know it's fun to make all the no teeth/no job/no IQ
jokes about their fans, but I thought they were alright. I guess if they'd lost by one point and rioted then I'd have a different
opinion. Their crowd is a kinda similar demographic to the GWS crowd out at Homebush and like them, quite young. Similar except
that there's a lot more of them obviously. They were pretty loud alright, but not quite at the same decibel level as an American
football or hockey crowd which is the loudest I've heard. I can only imagine what a Brazil v Argentina soccer game must sound
like. Clearly though Collingwood have done something right in getting a whole new generation of fans to follow their team.
Other than that, I'll be on (hopefully) the Lions bandwagon next Saturday.

I'll plead guilty to bringing up last night's Welcome to Country. Just wanted to get an opinion on the reception to Uncle Colin from someone who was at the ground and thought the thread about the game was the best way to do that. Happy for you to shift the WTC posts to Open Chat, Liz.

It's relevant to the finals because it's the only time it happens (except for the odd special round).

I was puzzled by the HIA called on Brent Daniels which kept him off the field for GWS in the critical last 10 mins.

This article explains the circumstances (assuming the explanation is correct).

Kingsley slams GWS star's 'extremely disappointing' last-quarter HIA - but Giants only had themselves to blame

It's an interesting article. Does it imply that the AFL doctors didn't recommend taking weitering off,.or the Carlton doctors ignored the AFL doctors?

I think it would be a brave club doctor who didn't act on AFL doctor advise.
And I think having de goey off at the same time kind of equalled it out.

                        +1

PS: I also highly doubt that Liz would be defending that moron....she's just doing her mod job, which she does well, albeit very enthusiastically at times.

Absolutely fair to bring it up I reckon.....but of course, things of a political nature can often take a nasty turn so Liz was obviously just being cautious to this possibility. Having said that, we all seem to be on the same page when it comes to Mr Newman.....so far anyway.

Brisbane have shat the bed, and Carlton are revelling in it.

Have we misjudged Carlton? I'm making plans to leave Melbourne for a week or so!
