On SEN today i heard a Northern Academy ruling which i wasn't aware of. It was mentioned Northern Academy players, like father/sons, have to nominate their respective AFL club before they can be selected/match bid by their club. I suppose on reflection it makes sense, as i always thought it as fait accompli that any player in their respective Northern Academy can be automatically selected by their AFL club, but then you have situation like Nick Blakey who also had option of either nominating Brisbane or North as F/S.

P.S. Heard today amongst the many fixture/draft requirements submitted by all 18 clubs to the AFL, one which pricked my ear was that if an Northern Academy Player also qualifies as a F/S, it takes precedence over Northern Academy selection (i.e. player no longer has option to make choice).

      As I predicted (weeks ago).

I don't believe that's true under current rules. (I'm not going to predict what changes they might make.)

My understanding is that if a player commits to the U18 programme of an academy they are obliged to make themselves available for selection to their host club but with one exception. That is that players who also qualify as a FS have the choice of opting their FS club instead. That's actually a concession to FS rule already.

The idea that FS should take priority is a nonsense. FS is an entirely optional arrangement. Optional for both player and club. No club is obliged to select the son of an ex-player, and no player is obliged to go to his father's club. Marc Murphy showed that. The AFL cannot (and will not) impose mandatory FS on a player.

Nick Blakey received a concession that allowed him to opt out of the academy priority over him and instead join either North or Brisbane. He chose not to. Freely. Imagine if he'd not been allowed to stay in his home town as all other northern academy players are allowed to, just because his father was a pretty decent player. Discrimination?

That's not to say some clubs won't have asked for it. There are a lot of stupid people running some of the clubs.

Thanks Liz, i'd also thought that was with the case when players first commit to the Academy but then second guessed myself when i took took F/S qualification into consideration (i.e It was Dwayne Russell who made that Academy comment).

Just to further clarify, it's effectively a wish list clubs had submitted to the AFL with their fixturing/draft suggestions

Kinnear on the True Bloods podcast was fantastic listening. It's great to actually hear him answer questions from media people who are club supporters instead of the usual generic stuff from the general media. I recommend all on here to give it a listen!

Pick 14 - Sydney Tom Hanily yet another Gippsland player for us. Reort on last weeks game -

Thereafter, Gippsland was able to wrestle back momentum for the most part, with hard-working midfielder Tom Hanily a pillar through the four quarters for Gippsland.

Hanily enhanced his midseason draft credentials with 32 disposals, seven tackles and a goal.

“I thought Tom was really good – his ability to stay strong over the contest all throughout the game was excellent,” Power coach Rhett McLennan said.

“He linked in well and shared the footy well.”

Shame we couldn't get Ling back, pick 14 in national and then MS draft is like fate!

                    Hanily is 179 cm forward/mid.

What does that say about Konstanty? Or is it depth for Shelldrick injury and possible Parker retirement at season end?

Reckon that rubber stamps JK - another first round bust.
Was hoping for a tall Fwd replacement for Buller.

Good luck to the kid and welcome

No doubt he's a talent, or we wouldn't have bothered using the pick.

Just watched the footage on our instagram page of the moment he was drafted at the Gippsland Power training facility with his teammates! Love it! [emoji3590]????

Overs for one knowing it would be unders for the other.
Correct. We were absolutely certain where a bid for Errol would come so took the gamble. Plus we had the advantage of Pap’s final game kicking woes already giving us Logan. That’s actually the great mystery of that draft - what we’d have done if our position and the Hawks had flipped, given they were so high of Campbell.
