Liam Pickering saying we've had discussions with him about Curtis Taylor of norf. He's an unrestricted free agent so we could pick him up for nothing and it stops norf from trying to bundle him up with a dud pick for Luke.

At the start of the season, I would have been happy finishing top 4, let alone make the GF with a chance for the flag. So in reality we over- achieved this year, but because we played so well for the most part, we were terribly disappointed with our final performance.
But let’s just analyse our team:

Up forward, taking Isaac away, we have only 2 consistent threats in Paps and Wilbur. Our talls are not good consistent marks and can only be graded average- good.
Our midfield is excellent at general play and in scoring, hence our terrific season, but can’t win clearances consistently over 4 quarters.
Our defence has 1 very good player in the Lizard, with the rest graded as good, to occasionally very good.
Brodie can be very good in the ruck, but Hayden is average- to good.
We have players like Campbell who haven’t found their best position yet or are only average- good.

Now look at the teams that dominated in the past: Hawks, Lions and the Tigers- they were choc full of talent on every line!

We are nowhere near at a comparable level, having only 4 players who can consistently be called elite in Issac, the Chad, Paps and Errol.
So why are we blaming our coaching staff and JL in particular, when clearly we are not as good as we think we are?

I love our club and the boys but let’s take off our rose tinted glasses guys!?

Some fair points there although I reckon of all the other teams, Brisbane was our worst case scenario in terms of opponent. Against every other team, we were eventually able to force turnovers and eventually prevail although we were lucky v Giants. Brisbane played to their potential brilliantly on GF day and their possession game and elite disposal meant we never looked like getting the ball back. Our recent record against them was pretty ordinary and this helped their confidence and they were bemused by us being favourites and this added to their motivation.

I confess I can't agree with much of that.

Brisbane were (and still are, though no-Joe will weaken them) a very strong squad with good depth. They played very well on GF day. No-one will deny they are worthy premiers for 2024.

But we made them look better than they probably were. It's easy to play superbly when there's no pressure from the opposition. They only just squeaked over the line in their two previous finals, while we played great football for most of the season and should have been able to match them. A month or two earlier we lost by just a few points, at the GABBA, in a see-sawing match in which we lost two important players part way through.

Losing to a very good side wasn't the problem. Not being vaguely competitive on GF day was. Even more so because it was a repeat of what we witnessed two years ago, and a decade ago.

More on the Parker trade here: Inside Trading 15/10/24. Summary: No obvious progress. Swans want pick 25, North still haven't improved from their offer of pick 67. Deal may involve pick 44 or a swap of future picks.

I get your point RR.....yes, we are far from perfect and yet somehow, we finished a game clear on top.

For most of the season we had cool sunnies on and they just felt a bit rose tinted after the GF. For the first half of the season, no one could touch us.

Did you predict the outcome of the GF, based on your hindsight assessment, before GF day?

Additional notes on Parker and Konstanty here: The key trades waiting to be done on Deadline Day. Nothing new on Parker. Konstanty could go to Essendon for a late pick.

Stevo, I wasn’t confident as our form towards the latter part of the season was not as good as our earlier form. That said, we won our 2 finals very well and were unlucky to lose by a kick against them at the Gabba. But somehow I was very apprehensive. I don’t really know why- perhaps the absence of Mills added to it, though I accepted that the coaches didn’t want to take chances. But if he was medically cleared maybe he should have played, if only for his steadying influence.

I thought if our boys would produce their best we would win, but if I’m honest it was really based on hope more than anything else.
After the disappointment and the pain we all felt, I consoled myself with the fact we were minor premiers after a very enjoyable season ( barring our non- effort against Port in Adelaide) and making it to the GF. Now that I’m a bit calmer and a bit more critical, I can see the weaknesses and wondering how we could improve!

                    Pick 44 for Parks
Pick 59 and Konstanty for Stringer

How good would GWS fwd line be with Stringer in it.

We have to try to get him, even better if they want Konstanty

                      Stringer is a big no.

Not only is he a big “no” (from me) for the Swans, I can’t fathom the Giants’ interest in him. They already have Callum Brown and Jake Riccardi as medium forwards who they struggled to fit into their best 23. Maybe neither has the raw talent of Stringer, but they both work much harder, which is part of what a team needs from a medium forward. They also have a fleet of small forwards that they can’t fit all into their team. Including the yet-to-debut (I think) Gothard who they expended a high draft pick on in last year’s draft.

They seem to me to have shifted from a club with far too many mids to one with not enough. Ward is on his last legs, Coniglio can’t stay on the park, they’ve lost Peatling, they’ve lost Perryman (who wasn’t playing midfield but could have been moved there. Callaghan is a huge talent but they seem pretty thin in that department beyond him.

Their forward line seems the last area that needs padding.

As much as I am not a fan of Stringer, I feel he is one player that can help take us that extra step next year. Not many players that are available this trade period can do that - perhaps only Barrass.

Conjecture after West Coast traded out their pick 3 to Carlton yesterday leaving their fans fuming & pundits scratching their heads, that they are focusing on loading up for next year to get Chad.

Theory being they are anticipating to receive 2 x future 1st round picks for Barass from Hawthorn. Not sure of Hawthorn's 2025 draft hand, but that seems like overs to me.

If Hawthorn finish around top.4 next year, WC ain't going to be receiving a top 10 pick. Can't see how WC could have sufficient 2025 hand for Chad? I think 2 x top 10 picks minimum.

Hope Chad commits for another few years at least to FA & does so sooner than later, to avoid all the media frenzy if it drags on long into next season.

This was just posted on the AFL site's draft blog.

"One of the deals that's LEAST likely to get done by tonight's deadline is Luke Parker's desired move from Sydney to North Melbourne.
Riley Beveridge tells AFL Trade Radio that Sydney hasn't made any counter-offers to North, believing that the ball remains in the Roos' court given they've lured the player."

Assuming that’s true, I'm quite happy with that. If North want Parker, then they're going to have to do better than offering a pick that we don't particularly want. I suspect that it also puts paid to rumours that it might be a salary dump on our part, because I think we'd be more keen to move Parker on if it was.

agree with swans that parks deal rests with nth. its nopt up to us to make the play. parks is still in our beat 22) However for the life of me whuy dont the swans get proactive and try to turn parks into a tiger. Surely they will need more experience players than nth and they hav a big draft hall. we could surely do a deal that gets parks back to vic, pay part of 2025 salary (not all) us for warner and maybe throw in Kastancy
