dont disagree with francis and hamling. surely we need to upgrade buller and use as fwd instead of amerty. comes from the same wa u18cham team as warner amd mcdonald. Was thought to have impressed Jl when they playe dhim in the seniors. Ans back to draft. i hope the rookie draft listing Jack Whitlock is wrong why do we need another tall fwd. His twein woudl be better ane plays in defence which is what we are crying out for. Hope we draft a key defender.

Rookie Me have put out their latest power rankings. This one goes down to pick 50.
Our final Power Rankings instalment for 2024 has dropped, settling the ever-flowing order of this year's deep talent pool.
Perhaps most notable for us, is that our academy prospect, Joel Cochran, is only mentioned as an afterthought to the top 50. If they're right, that means we get him as something of a bargain with our pick 59.
Possibly also notable, is the rankings that they give to a couple of players, that other phantom drafts have us taking with our first round picks. I think Zero Hanger had us taking Kayle Gerreyn at 23, but here he's ranked at 39. While ESPN had us taking Hamish Davis at 26, but here he's ranked at 32. I've no idea who's the more correct, but the often wide discrepancy between draft gurus, does stress to me just how difficult it is to rank players, who all have their own unique profiles, in terms of skills and personalities.Comment

We’ve done well with some late picks and not so well with some earlier ones. It seems like a bit of hit and miss to me, but that’s football I guess. Some are late developers and unless you’re a real standout and go 1-3, even the gurus and recruiters can get it wrong. Luck more than science by the look of things, so taking the “best available” is really so subjective. Why not look for positions you might need in a year or two?Comment

A simple example: compare the player rankings for the 2023 draft to the order of a phantom draft. They may not match, even when prepared by the same writers. The actual draft will be different again.
2023 AFL draft.
October rankings (Cal Twomey):
1 Harley Reid
2 Jed Walter
3 Zane Duursma
4 Colby McKercher
5 Nick Watson
6 Daniel Curtin
7 Ryley Sanders
8 Nate Caddy
9 Ethan Reid
10 Connor O'Sullivan
Phantom Draft (Cal Twomey):
1 Harley Reid
2 Colby McKercher
3 Jed Walter
4 Zane Duursma
5 Nick Watson
6 Ryley Sanders
7 Caleb Windsor (ranking 11)
8 James Leake (ranking 12)
9 Ethan Reid
10 Daniel Curtin
(Nate Caddy 11, Connor O'Sullivan 12)
Actual draft:
1 Harley Reid
2 Colby McKercher
3 Jed Walter
4 Zane Duursma
5 Nick Watson
6 Ryley Sanders
7 Caleb Windsor
8 Daniel Curtin
9 Ethan Reid
10 Nate Caddy
(Connor O'Sullivan 11, James Leake 17)
First 7 picks in Twomey's phantom draft were correct.
This year's draft will be very hard to pick for a phantom draft or for rankings because this year's draft is very even. Last year, Harley Reid was clear top. In the draft where we drafted McDonald, there was a clear top seven. This year, who knows?"Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

Latest ESPN mock draft does has us selecting KPD Matt Whitlock with our first pick. Small forward/mid Jesse Dattoli with our 2nd pick.
Mentions some clubs are linking us to shopping around one of our two 1st rounders on draft night.

The Age has listed the full draft field. I notice Ashton Warner's name there. Worth a rookie pick to help keep Chad?? (ie. Do a LeBron James Jnr even if he's below par just to keep the old man happy,)Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

"Parker's departure has left them slightly short-handed in the midfield" ?????????
Sydney are reportedly looking into the prospect of signing delisted Carlton midfielder David Cuningham.Comment

Yuk. He’s oldish, injured a lot and not really an onballer. From memory more of a James Jordon type utility. Is that what we need? If we do I’d rather we look at the Carroll they delisted. Matt?Comment

Drafting a KPD like Whitlock is our number 1 priority imo. Agree we also need a second defender but not necessarily a KPD, but a general defender as a replacement for Harry, Rampe & Lloyd who are in their twilight. Have Snell & Edwards in VFL who might be ready to step up next season but need to.further bolster in this area.
Dattoli is expected to go anywhere between the late teens & the 30's. Wonder if we're looking at trading down our pick 26 into the 30's for Dattoli & moving up from our pick 44 to get a quality general defender?
Last time we adopted this tactic was for Konstanty & that turned out disastrously, considering we could've got Weddle instead.

There's a Jack Carroll, who's just been picked up by St Kilda, after being delisted by Carlton. From what I can gather on David Cuningham, he seems to be classy and quick, but has spent plenty of time not playing, due to a variety of injuries. So, I guess it's up to our medical staff, to determine whether there's something inherently physiological that makes him injury prone, or if he's just been unlucky so far and that his upside makes it a gamble worth taking? Though of course, there's also the consideration, of whether we really need another more outside than in type of player?Comment

Just after I posted that post, I read that Jack (the one who had been delisted) had joined the Saints as a DFA. I think he'll be a good pick up for them. I'd like to think we had a look. He, too, has been hampered by injuries in his short career but as a 188cm mid/forward who has shown his ability to "move through traffic" he sounds like the kind of player we could use. Though maybe still a bit too much in the 'utility' mold.Comment
