Also - someone mentioned #27 for Richard Ambrose - if so what number did Sanford "Matty" Wheeler wear that year? (1993)

I've sorted out the Scott Direen one - thanks guys

I've got some of the easier numbers sorted right back to the early 80's
Number 7 is the easiest - thanks to Carroll and Seymour - I've got it filled all the way back to 1981
        #15 and #23 right back to 1978
        #16 back to 1983
#10 - I'm just missing 1983 to take it all the way back to 1980
#13 and #30 I've got every year back to '80
        #3 and #4 I've gotten back to 1986
#18 I just need to sort out the Matthew Lloyd/Craig Nettlebeck clash of 1990/91 to go all the way back to 1979
#26 I'm missing 1993 but have every other year back to 1979
        #29 and #31 go back to 1987

I have gaps all over the place in the other numbers
        Hi Ert,

some I think I remember are:
        16 was Ricky Quade
10 was Brian Woodman - mid to late 70's
29 was that David Mcleish? in the 70's
        31 was Francis Jackson

Any other numbers you are still after?

          Great work guys

I posted an entire list of the ones I have so far a couple of pages back - as I said, I'm mainly concentrating on the Sydney years for starters, but South Melbourne numbers are much appreciated as I'm working my way back 10 years at a time

At the moment my focus is the 10 years 1983-93

Great stuff Dr J - it's like a trip down memory lane. I just watched on Fox Footy some 1978 stuff, and it was great to see our old sloggers out there again, where if we managed to win 10 games in a season it was a great achievement!!

Magnificent list Doctor - filled in plenty of gaps - but some names have caused me some confusion

                          Neville Fields 1978-81

Did we have three #1's in 1979?

                          8. John Scarlett,(father of Matthew) John Murphy (70's) Barry Beecroft, Tony Haenan (father of Toby, Australian swimmer),Greg Smith, Michael Wright,
                          Plenty of overlap here

                          Greg Smith 1980-84
                          Michael Wright 1978-80
                          John Scarlett 1977-78
                          Barry Beecroft 1973-77
                          John Murphy (non Fitzroy) 1970-73
                          Tony Haenan 1966-71

As a general rule of thumb I'm assuming the older player wore the number during the first year or two of the newer players career - though this may not always be the case - if anyone has alternate numbers for any of these guys would be a big help! Another problem with this era is that mid-season trades were common - so I am going to come across instances of 2 players wearing a number in the same year

                          9. David Ackerley, Gerrard Neesham
                          Neesham 1982
                          Ackerly 1976-85

                          10. David Bolton
                          I thought he was #16?

                          13. Graham Dempster (father of Sean), Greg Miller.
                          Greg Miller 1972-76
                          Graham Dempster 1972-79

                          5 years of overlap here!

                          20. Graeme Teasdale, Ian Thompson
                          Teasdale 1975-81
                          Thomson 1973-76

                          21. Tony Morwood, Michael Byrne
I already have Byrne as #14 for the 2 years he played (1987-88) and surely Tony Morwood would've been wearing 21 in those years

If we can sort out the overlaps in those numbers, we'll have a HUGE chunk of the 70's done thanks to the Doctor

still hunting for numbers from the 1980-93 period (I know most of you have probably blocked large chunks of it from your memory - especially the early 90's)

Hi Ert, you might know of my site - AFL Tables? http://stats.rleague.com/afl/afl_index.html

I've just added 1993 stats, which, at the next update (Monday), will include the 93 guernsey numbers. Hopefully they're right, but you never can tell with newspapers.

One strange thing - Aldo Dipetta (2 games)- the Herald Sun claimed his number was 0. And so did the The Age.
Could this really be the case?

thanks Paul - your site has been a godsend - one of the main reasons I got 1994-2004 finished so quickly!!!

I doubt Aldo DiPetta wore 0 tho - cant remember what he did wear
