One of the most one sided trades in the history of the AFL.

A trade week that started with promise has ended in farce.

I want to hear Roos explain why he offloaded Dempster, a young experienced player, for FREE (they would have done the deal without him, I am sure). What the big deal of jumping from 28 to 26 is in a shallow draft. Why, when it appears Fisher was taken out of the deal due to medical issues, no other compensation was included in the deal?

    Madness.
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

Legs, have a read of Des's post, number 230 in this thread. It puts it all in perspective.

I think there is merit in what you are saying here. Schnides agreed because basically Roos said its saints or pre season draft mate.

So, you don't think much about Schneids eh? So, how's he going to fit into the drunks' lineup? They already have a pretty slow list including, Limping Lenny, Grandad Harvey, Caughtcha Milne and Sook Maguire...
If he's as slow and unfit as all that, Schneids would seem to be a perfect fit to me.

Dempster may have been for the high jump anyway? he didnt figure in 08 plans, that;s for sure! So perhaps as has been suggested here, we did him a favour!

Really, the best we would have hoped for out of this deal would have been a trade of 1st round picks, and every club is always reluctant to talk about top ten picks - see how long it took to do the Judd deal!!

What would we have done with picks or players? We simply don't have the space. If we were willing to take the financial hit, we could have delisted Crouch or Mathews or whoever.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Seems at first glance like a shocking trade, but Dempster was struggling to gain a place in the team so was probably looking at being delisted anyway. Trading Schneider for #26 is a reasonable outcome.

Roos' doubletalk doesn't help though. Makes comments about "We are mindful that our list is getting a bit older so it's good to have two more young kids coming in" yet has essentially traded older.

Why did we not get rid of J Bolton for a younger, faster and more talented midfielder! That was the trade we desperately needed to make.

Sure, but I think Dempster is a good player. Fast, booming kick, reliable defender. Why would we delist him ahead of Matthews, Crouch, et al.

Crouch and Mathews are under contract, Dempster is not

Actually, speaking as a card-carrying Mathews bagger, I actually think Benny had a pretty decent year. Not so much Crouch - ruined season due to injury.

I agree, I think Dempster is a good player, I am sad to see him go. Not so fussed about Schneider.

I totally agree with you Legs. I am very saddened by the trade of Schneider, but to do it for pick #26, throwing in Dempster as well, defies logic IMO.

Dempster would be ranked in the top 25 players at our club. Anyone who thinks he would have been delisted is deluded.

He asked for a trade when Mattner was recruited. He should have been told to put his head down and earn his spot - although since he never had the Mathews/Crouch goldpass he probably didn't fancy another season running around Canberra

In the case of Dempster, the kid has a future and I think we'll see that. He won't be a great of the game by any means, but he's the sort of player that adds structure to a team and frees up others. I also think we played him out of position. I think Lyons knows that.

Regarding Mathews, he has limited future value because of his age. Marginal players of his ilk don't typically make it past 28/29. As for Crouch, he's lost his biggest asset, which is his pace. I suspect the leadership group and self-preservation has had a role to play in these decisions.

As a number of people have pointed out, I shudder to think what will happen in 2-3 years if some of our hitherto untried 'talent' does not come through. last year with its strong draft was the critical year to address that and we didn't. This year's trading is, I am afraid, a continuation on theme.

IF that is the case it probably says Mattner is going to be used as a HBF or defensive wingman, and Dempster was told his spot had just been taken. Real shame to see him go - he looked quite lively when he was played up forward this year, albeit with mixed results. Strange that he got dropped after the WCE game which was his most prolific for a while.

I think he had real potential and I think while our previous discards have done nothing at other clubs, I think he may be the one to hurt us.

Bit indifferent to Schneider leaving, but I wish we could punt Jude too.
