Thanks T-bag, what a brilliant insightful post that was

Bradshaw and Riska were put up for trade, but Bradshaw held off on signing a contract that was offered to him half way through the 2009 season, and there is some speculation albeit unverified that Riska had already decided to head to the Suns before the 2009 trade period.

How about you enlighten us how it is any different to the Swans trading Schneider against his will or offering up Jude? Or any of the other 15 clubs offering players for trade during trade week?

      1) We didn't trade Scheids for a richardhead
      2) We didn't contract anyone with a back-end loaded contract that would put our salary cap under pressure in the next few years [or if we did we covered that up better than the Lions]

I'd love to play with Fev on the days he kicks those amazing goals, but I can imagine that he may be a bit of a PITA to spend the working week with.

We got rid of Schneider and Dempster for salary cap reasons. Dempster was stagnating and needed a change anyway. These two were traded away under good circumstances and there was no bad blood.

Voss put up a club legend who was still in great form and a very promising young player to get an absolute dickhead to the club. Voss treated Rischitelli and Bradshaw like posessions, not people. That's the massive difference. That is probably why there are so many Brisbane players who want out.

Bradshaw and Voss are no longer on speaking terms. These two played in 3 flags together, so it gives you a fair idea of how badly Voss is willing to treat his players and how much he cares about loyalty. And now it's coming back to bite him.

In Roos' autobiography he makes it pretty clear how much he dislikes the trading period, particularly when players are traded against their will. I think the Swans still did it under the Roos regime, but they probably handled it better than the Lions did.

Plus his athleticism was never really in question. It was his inability to handball to a stationary team mate in space 5m away without landing it at their feet or several yards to either side while playing in the relatively unpressured ACTAFL that was more of an obstacle.

(That is a tad harsh, I know, but his disposal declined from mediocre in his first season or two at the club to dreadful in his final year.)

And you would think that four years training with an AFL club would have help as well compared to kids who have played at junior club and rep level .

Could of course be the other way around - the Swans making a splash to tell the marketplace they are keen to make a deal and hence jimmy some better prospects into the market.

Not the most reliable source but the club looks interested in Carlton defender Brett Thorton.

That would have to be rubbish, we don't need mediocre backmen, wouldn't make our 22.

I'm a fan of Sherman, I think he's going to be a great player for the next 5-10 years. Our midfield already has an incredible amount of potential, if we add Sherman to the midfield we already have we're going to create something very special. On top of everything he is 23, which is the perfect age to fit in with our young core.

Yes to Sherman. Or at least I'd trust the Swans' recruiters on their assessment if they think he's not a dickhead. We could use a strong-bodied goal-scoring HFF; I don't know if he has the tank to play midfield like ROK has, but could take the role in our forward-line that ROK has occupied. TDL and Jetta are both great goalscorers, but not strong-bodied. McGlynn has found the sticks a lot in 2010, but at the end of the day is there as a defensive forward as much as anything. Sherman can focus on attack.

No to Thornton. The idea that we assess recruiting needs based on an injury (however serious) that CBolt suffered in 2010 is strange; and even when our side was without CBolt, was anyone really thinking, 'Gee, our backline would be improved by the addition of someone like Bret Thornton'?

The schermozzle that the Blions have become (at exactly the wrong moment in their history), teaches us once again about the #1 rule of list management, that clubs seem to break over and over again: Do not put players on heavily back-ended contracts. Ever. You're auctioning off your future. The most likely result is saddling whoever is trying to run the club in 2 or 3 years' time with an underperforming, or completely non-performing, ex-star who's sucking $800k of your salary cap-- which in turn means you don't have the cap space to reward young players who are actually playing well with the pay increase they deserve, meaning they want to walk, and the whole joint just goes into a downward spiral.
