His manager was on Trade Week Radio and said he was contracted and now has got over his injuries and was told he is a required player by the Weagles. In anycase, as a Melbourne boy, I imagine he would only agree to go back to Melbourne.

Just not sure how we could get the deal done as we don't have any picks around the right value to interst the Weagles.

Well I reckon they let Gunston go for a song, he is worth more than the pick 24 they got from Hawthorn, the kid could be a gun. The two upgrades of their later picks are just a bit of frilly icing on the deal. It is basically pick 24 for Gunston and in that Adelaide have rolled over.

So let's hope now that knowing they got done over for Gunston they don't try and make it up with Armstrong. He is worth no more than a straight swap for Sumner, or our pick in the 60s, or maybe just to get the deal done we do a three way and send Seaby to Poor Power and they give a 40s something pick to the Adelaide Cows.

He maybe contracted, but Sydney asked the ? apprently he potentially is looking at more opportunities as most likely wont break into the eagles midfiled group at the moment, barring injury...
Clubs always say they are required players to try and push their value up....How many times have you heard a club say he is a required player and then ends up being traded

Maybe, maybe not. Sometimes clubs seem too fixated on "winning a trade" or at least, not being seen to be bent over, and obsess over trivial amounts of value. The currency available to clubs is lumpy. Assuming there were no players at the Hawks interested in moving to the Crows (Ellis was mentioned as a possible at one stage but apparrently turned down the idea), the Hawks didn't have much to trade with other than pick 24. And who is to say whether that is reasonable value or not. Gunston is still a very young player in the early stages of his development who was a mid-range draft pick in his time. His main value seems to be based on kicking a handful of junk time goals against Richmond. The competiton history is littered with players who have played good footy in their first handful of games and been declared the next best thing by hopeful fans, only to fail to go on with it. Until Gunston has played a couple of solid seasons of senior footy, it isn't really possible to get a grasp of the level of player he might become.

Is there even that much difference in value between, say, pick 18 and pick 24? Every year recruiters come out and exclaim how surprised they were that such and such was still there at their pick, highlighting the vastly different rankings clubs put on youngsters, especially those outside the top handful. Sure, if a club has their eye on a specific player, pick 18 gives them a better chance of picking him up than pick 24. But they may still well get that same player at pick 24, and once he is on their list, his value is not affected by which pick he was chosen at.

If you want more empirical evidence, you just need to look at the actual players taken at different picks and I daresay there are just as many taken in the 22-25 range as there are in the 16-19 range who have gone on to have good AFL careers. I know that the Swans can certainly contribute a couple of duds from the 16-19 range to any such analysis.

Cause we don't have enough 'replacements'. With Joey, Parker, Mitchell and Jack all capable of fishing out the ball our grunt players for the next 5-10 years are set. Koby would be a luxury and the WCE would want an arm and a leg. Kane Lucas fills a better need if we were after a young mid.

What has Armstrong done? He's worth no more than a 3rd rounder/average player in all honesty. I'm not saying he wont be a very good player for us eventually, but that's got nothing to do with the present.
Fair enough they play hardball. Players are aborting ship selfishly, so why shouldn't they drive a hard bargain.

I hope WE don't pay through the nose for Armstrong though, cause frankly I don't see him ever being a 'very good player'. Capable and able to do his job in the team certainly, but he's no gun or highly rated youngster. Finishing the season well, when games mean nothing in a bottom team that's playing another bottom team is hardly impressive. He's collecting those possessions of the half-back line too. Bevan + Meredith is a fair trade and I wouldn't offer anymore.

Abosolutely. Stevens might be a fine prospect - albeit an unproven one but we have an abundance of inside types, and young ones too. We need players capable of providing the "SPREAD" that all the players seem to report Longmire demands (but doesn't get on a consistent enough basis).

While I am not advocating the Swans should play hardball (I suspect it can be damaging in the long run), we could probably get him the pre-season draft if push came to shove. He has shown a clear desire to move to Sydney (the city) and he is simply not a tasty enough prospect for another club to take him regardless of that desire. So unless GWS have any interest in him, it is likely he'd be there come our pick. And even if GWS were interested, they could only take him in the draft with the Crows' express permission since they have already signed Davis as an uncontracted player from there.

I suspect the Crows (and any third party club) would turn their noses up at our third round pick but maybe if we traded Seaby for Port's 3rd round pick that might be more palatable. If St Kilda become involved in a 3 club deal with Lynch going to the Crows, they are more likely to be interested in a draft pick than one of our fringe players, given their salary cap woes.

I would love it if the Swans somehow got hold of Surjan from a Seaby trade but if I were Port's list manager I wouldn't be keen on trading Surjan unless he were insisting he wanted out. He's had a poor last year and a half but he is a quality small defender, and would either release Smith to the midfield or allow Shaw to be used in more attacking roles.

I don't think Adelaide are being unreasonable in the context of trade week. A lot if not most of the trades are done in the last few hours. It's still early days, but they're dealing from a position of weakness and will inevitably accept a trade not much different to the one they rejected. Or get nothing.

I'm surprised it took so long for Seaby's name to come up this week, I'm surprised Richmond hasn't gone after him also. Certainly us only really playing him this year when Mummy was out hurts us getting anything decent for him and I feel a sense of concern about Pyke and Currie (?) being our backups in case of injury or suspension (Mummy seems to be aiming for a sling tackle once a year!), I also think Seaby is a good forward option, but if we can get maybe Armstrong and a pick swap, probably not a bad result.

If we can't find a way to make two ruckman work, then he deserves his opportunity somewhere else. Pity though.
Can't agree about the forward option Damien. He was tried on numerous occasions this year up forward and was less than impressive. It's the reason they didn't bring him into the seniors to play that role.

I feel for Seabs because without this ridiculous sub rule he's in our best 22 as the 2nd ruck.

Hutchy reporting that Seabs and wife are in Adelaide at the moment, with him undergoing a medical at Port, sounds like a deal is imminent.
