Though im not privy to all the inner workings, im pretty annoyed at this trade. LJ could be a great player, and we've just given him away.

Adelaide fans on BF are laughing.

I recall they were laughing when we gave them Fitzy. They took Davis (GWS bound) in the draft above Johnston. So another good reason not to read BF or take notice of Crow supporters.

Comparisons with Ryan Fitzgerald and Lewis Johnston are probably on the money.

The reality is that due to a number of reasons, Johnston did not succeed in the harbour city. To those who bemoan this Armstrong/no. 35-Johnston trade: get over it! It would stun me beyond comprehension if in the fullness of time all of these events arose:

            1. Lewis Johnston is a great success at the Crows AND
            2. Tony Armstrong fails at the Swans AND
            3. The number 35 draft pick fails at the Swans

For this trade to prove an example of poor judgement ALL three of the above events would have to occurs. I very much doubt it.

The issue for me about this trade, is not so much about which player has more potential to deliver... though my feeling is LJ hands down....
But why did we chase so hard, and give away anything worth keeping, when we seemingly didn't need to.

i think we were looking at trying to get picks from adelaide hence putting LJ on the table to fry bigger fish that may well play out tomorrow.
I leave it to those in charge and paid by the club to make these decisions for the benefit of the team and the players concerned.
the reality is we tend to get it more right than not when it comes to trade week..

The deal was Johnston for pick 35, forget Armstrong. he and that last pick were bonus. I still don't understand why we got that last pick from them.

Is there anyone else in the Swans that we could have traded to get a pick similar to this. We won't know till possibly tomorrow or draft day what the intentions are for this pick. Hopefully we will find out tomorrow.

Unless they can talk Walsh into staying a saint then he wants to go to Sydney. Think positive thoughts about that one everybody and move on.

Armstrong/Johnston trade a right move for Sydney

Everyone has rightfully been disappointed that yet again a promising 1st round selection hasn't worked out. If he would have gone through a normal injury free development, certainly things would have been different. It must have been frustrating for him, being touted as future star, to find himself shuffling between rehab and the reserves.

But the coaches must face the reality as it stands today. If you look at our list we had 10 players (excluding rucks, Goodes and ROK) vying for 6 or seven 'tall' KPP spots:

These 5 are all but sealed:
                    1. Richards
                    2. Grundy
                    3. Alex Johnson
                    4. Reid
                    5. Rowan (too many mids to consider him there)

Based on the performances at the end of the year, I would say that Spangher and White have the inside running on the remaining 2 positions. I noted that in the B&F count that White got a handful of votes in several of those games. So the coaches must have liked what they saw. Most of us thought that he made some improvement to go, but hope there's more to come next year.

Probably LRT would be the first injury replacement if he doesn't find a starting role in 2012.

That leaves Everitt and LJ fighting it out for spots created by either injury or poor form. And I would say that it is more likely that we would see improvement in Everitt than LJ, especially considering that Johnston ended the season with an ankle injury, and has some way to go on the physical development side.

So going into next season, it's really hard to see where LJ would get many games. If we came to the end of the 2012 season with yet another unimpressive year for him, whether it be due to injury or just not being able to break into the side, I wonder what his value would be worth then.

I think that is very realistic scenario that the coaches must have been facing in making their decision to let him go. Given that, I think the right decision was made.

Shaw has been great this year, especially with his run and carry out of the backline. What would we have done without him, but kicking accuracy is not his strong suit as we know. Armstrong seems to have both the speed and skills to help us move quickly out of back half of the ground freeing up Shaw for a more attacking role in the midfield.

If Lynch was only worth pick 37 after being pick 13 in the same draft as Johnston, I think pick 35 is not so bad. On this basis, I think we did okay. LJ may well become a star at Adelaide if he gets his body right. Good luck to him. I think we did alright under the circumstances.

OK then, putting Armstrong aside for now.
Pick 35, in what is described as a shallow draft..... for a KP forward, whom Roos described as the best kick at the club, with a big potential upside......IS A CRAP DEAL......
Unless we've already stitched up a deal for another potential KP forward.......Like Walsh...I'm hoping, but am not holding my breath.

I don't know how you did it but that trade now looks even worse for us, just as I was starting to come to grips with it.

The truth is Johnston grew up in Port Pirie...for those of you that don't know its a lead smelting town in South Australia. Research there has linked lead exposure with retarded intellectual development of children.

You only have to take a visit to Port Pirie to realise there are an extremely high level of people there that are "not quite with it"

If only you had alerted the Swans footy department of this insightful fact, prior to the 2008 draft.....
Then maybe Shuey would be running around in red and white.

Milne's done alright despite his retarded intellectual development so there was always a slight chance
