Tippett!!

Im sure this has probably been discussed somewher in the 68 pages of this thread, but am I right in assuming that to get Tippet the Swans have two options:
- Do a deal with Adelaide; or
- Adelaide get nothing, Tippett goes into the draft, and we do a deal with GWS (GC?)
If so, it seems to me that the Swans a in a pretty strong negotiating position, and need not offer Adelaide much at all, as something (last round draft pick) is better than nothing.

Sorry to put your hopes down but we can't deal with GC or GWS as you can't trade PSD draft picks. We can't do a nudge nudge deal either as that has been squashed by the AFL since the Veale Deal.

Also we don't hold all the aces ad Adelaide can suddenly call "misere". There are 2 famous examples of clubs refusing to accept less than fair value. Nick Stevens, champ at the time, was trying to get to Collingwood for a pick in the 30s...even though CL had high picks to offer. Port said FO and Stevens went to Carlton for free.

Then Collingwood wanted Luke Ball for a pick in the 30s and St. Kilda said
"he's a champ give us a first round or he walks." He walked and Collingwood picked him

I was all for Grundy going in a trade, for multiple reasons, as stated previously in this thread and others. However, with him staying put that means the Swans will have real selection problems next year (provided that we get Tippett). Some may see that as a good thing (which it might be), but it might also lead some players to frustration and discontentment.

As much as everyone keeps saying that they don't want to lose any premiership players (or McGlynn, or Rohan, or Mitchell) the reality is that someone from the side (a tall player if we want to remain balanced) will not be in the team much next year unless there is a long term like-for-like injury.

If he goes into the draft (either draft - ND or PSD) he can name his terms (contract length and total value of contract) and any team who picks him is obliged to honour the terms he has named.

It used to be the case that you could only nominate contract length and value in the Pre Season Draft (PSD).
In the the national draft (ND), you just took the standard initial contract. This is the way that entry-level players enter the draft.

PSD is usually reservered for experienced players who missed out on a trade.

This is the problem with having too many good players. The ones that miss out on seniors games are going to want to leave. Most of the reserves team should be young players who will accept a few years in the 2nds for development so long as they see that there will be spots coming up for them as older players retire.

I doubt Tippett would get past GWS at Pick 1 in the PSD, not the club he wants to go to now but he could be a triple premiership player by 2018 given the massive number of first round picks GWS has on their list.

I am assuming that there is a fair amount of hyperbole in there, but it will be interesting to watch the fate of GC and GWS unfold. Unless they traded away some of their picks / young players for seasoned bodies over the next couple of years I am not confident that they will automatically be in contention for one flag before the decade is out.

It is so hard to build a champion list just from the draft (particularly from scratch). St. Kilda came close, but no cigar - and Melbourne is a mess despite all their early picks. Incidentally, the Swans only had three first-round draft picks in their 2012 premiership team.

Wallace thinks we need to sell #22 and Parker or Grundy (once again) and #42 for Tippett.

It may just be boredom with the whole Tippett deal, but all of a sudden I want to see Walsh at full forward.

Ireland categorically said Mitchell has never been mentioned by the swans for trade and NEVER will. I take that as binding for at least this trade period. SAo Thank god, he's off the table..in fact , was never on it.

Said Kinnear was handling it. Said that Kinnear had a breakthrough this afternoon and that it was a positive meeting.

Then just talked generally about trading and didn't add anymore. They did ask him if he knew what was discussed in the meeting and he said - not really.

Mentioned Tom Mitchell has not been mentioned and IS NOT part of the trade and has not actually been mentioned in the KT trade.

Wallace asked if the deal was players and tips and he said that they are working their way through things. "where you start is not where you finish". He said they are confident that they will get to a conclusion that will make both sides happy.

Ireland said apart from Jude who is making up his mind about next year, everyone in the list is playing well so playing team composition will not need to change to any degree for next year.

Said KT deal is not stifling any other deals during trade period and unlikely to trade any more apart from this deal (if KT deal is done).

They will instead go "fishing" in the draft as Club has been very good at finding players in the draft.

At worse if they are picking later then they will rely on their recruiters.

Tried to find out from him if another Club was involved and he said that that was not likely.

Asked him if the deal will run for another 2 weeks - he said he hopes not.

Asked about Jude and getting Ireland to give percentage of him playing on - he said he didn't know and there is a spot on the list for him and he will decide whether to continue playing or following other opportunities which may arrive post footy. Jude going to Hamilton Island this weekend as Kennelly is getting married up there.

Ireland thinks that if it was him, he would start thinking about long term opportunities.

Wallace asked if he thought nhe would make a better boundary rider than Kirk. Ireland laughed and said KIrky was a friend of his.

Sounded very positive to me that no premiership players would be involved, only picks (perhaps I read to much into it, but that was the impression I got)

He mentioned that a few other clubs were interested in some of our players, so I would assume a pick or two may come our way to be forwarded on to Adelaide in addition to our first pick.

I agree. Walsh for full forward.

Morton only played the last 2 or 3 games this season and our forward line was starting to function pretty well with him Reid and LRT and Goodsey and Pyke bobbing in and out, as well as the mids. Next season Morton will hopefully play a more integral role, continuing to add that extra dimension to the forward line.

The space they would have had to make for Tippett should be given to Walsh; let LRT mentor him to take over his role.

I know Tippett would be very useful but there is no guarantee that he is going to be a real star, he is said to be a great mark but inconsistent and not reliable when shooting for goal! So why should we offer up someone like Mitchell or even pick 22 considering the overall circumstances. What bargaining chips do we have now Grundy is out of consideration? Only our young guns and draft picks and to me they are more important to our future than Tippett is to our immediate present. Surely we have enough upside to get us to a back to back grand final with what we have got.

Good news by the sounds of it. Kinnear has enough experienced to make astute and not kneejerk decisions. Tippett will be good for the long term. Our club looks long term and not short term which is why we are so successful.

It's about time we bit the bullet in regards to a key forward/ruckman. LRT and Pyke won't be their for the long term so Tippett is our most viable replacement.

Good news if the trade doesn't involve any of our regular first teamers.
