Luds, earlier in the year you and I were calling for development of a squad of players, say 26-30 players, rather than just a best 22. I now some people are against this idea, but if some of our ressies are that good, then we really wont be weakening our side that much. A rotation policy can only help develop these players. I'm only talking about one or two players per game. The likes of Membrey, Robinson, Towers, Rohan, Jones, Aliir, Biggs, X, Nank, Naismith. It feels a lot better to be rotated out than dropped. And come finals we pick the best 22 available for that game knowing that they have tasted the top grade and have handled it. Perhaps we just need to change our mindset of best 22 and think more of a squad of players. Something to think about anyway and create debate. fwiw I'm really torn about Mitchell. I want to bring him back in as his work effort last week suggests he is fit again and switched on. You don't get 64 possies at any level without working hard. He is quality and he will a future leader of our club. But Lloyd has brought some good skills into the team and will keep improving.Comment

We just happen to be in a rare situation where the team is virtually injury free. We've got a fantastic player in Tom Mitchell burning up the reserves and no obvious player to drop. Personally, I'd like to see Lloyd hold his spot and keep the momentum going. I'm not superstitious, but we are 5-0 with him in the side. A spot for Tom will surely open up, so I'm not too worried about it.
other than a few exceptions like Ted, Josh and Buddy, we should be able to shuffle in and out a few players without much effect on the side. All good teams manage to do this. I think we can feel quite confident now that Laidler, Cunningham and Lloyd can perform well at the top level. It would be good if we could add a few more to that list. You never know who might need to step in when it comes to the finals.
The next 3 games are against top 5 sides, so we probably shouldn't do too much experimenting there. But I would like see some of those well performing young reserves players get some senior games after that.Comment

Does anyone think that Nick Smith could go into the midfield as well? I think I may have heard him say that he would like to get in there at some point. If Harry could take his spot in defence, or at least allow more people to chop in and out of the midfield, that'd be pretty awesome.Comment

i think our midfield is over flowing at the minute so for me i would keep Nick in the back 6.........also we are floating Shaw and Harry back from time to time to fly off the HBF but not much with Harry yet as he is not quite ready for that role
Harry has very specific tasks at the moment and is a key for matchups........last year we got found out on some matchups in the speed dept and in my opinion above all other goals that the Swans coaching panel is striving for Harry to be be our speedy "run with player" come the finals series
against the Hills, Riolis, Motlop etc
Harry is arguably the best speedy run with option now anyway"be tough, only when it gets tough"

In - Normal scheduling
Out - Thursday night games
A large part of me is hoping for a dismal crowd so the Thursday night games will go the way of the Sunday 4pm games which were dumped after a poor showing.
I debating doing my part as who wants to be home at 11.30pm and be back in the office 8.30am the next morning?-Comment

I think there will be a good crowd next Thursday, especially considering it's the cats. I prefer a Thursday game than going out to ANZ any day/time of the week!Using TapatalkComment

So reading between the lines, from the Longmire interview, it looks like no Pyke for the Cats(hammy not quite right- what are you doing to him Gibbs?) but probably Mitchell to come in....I guess that means -
In : McGlynn, Mitchell
Out : BJ, Lloyd
Gee, interesting that he talked about a bunch of both, veteran and rookie players from the 2's impressing...But no mention of Membrey??Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

The issue I see with Membrey is :
1. Hes not big enough to survive as a key forward at AFL level. At NEAFL level he tears it up. Dont forget that a smart undersized forward by the name of Dennis- Lane used to score a lot of goals in NEAFL but was found wanting at AFL level (yes I know they arent the same body types).
2. He therefore (like Dennis lane) needs to have more to his game to be considered as a half forward. Half forwards need to be able to tackle , corral, chase fast half backs etc. This seems to be where the coaches are indicating he needs to work on.
3. Hes only just twenty. Most bigger bodied forwards dont really play this early unless they are very good or in a crap team.Comment

His marking on the lead is strong, his finishing looks exceptional and his goal sense looks good. I was very excited about that goal that he banged from 55m on the run against the GWS reserves.
His fitness ability and his pressure skills will improve with time and hard work. It's easier to teach pressure skills to someone with great attacking skills than teaching genuine attacking skills to someone who has pressure skills.
It will come. He is 19.Comment
