I've heard all this before with Cyril and I suspect there were some games with Hawthorn but the thing is that six Melbourne clubs also passed on him before the Hawks.

I can understand the interstate clubs cooling off, especially as indigenous kids can be high maintenance, but the other six clubs would have heard all these games before and would have scouted him and done their research.

Kids are allowed to say they don't want to leave their home state. They are human beings not cattle. But having said that they want to very sure they'll get drafted if they throw their weight around. In a way you probably want them to be honest because the last thing you want with an interstate kids is then to bail after two years. Florent is a good example, even though I know it was exaggerated by him family tragedy. I am sure we made sure we was prepared to come to Sydney before we drafted him and we would have respected it if he didn't.

Some kids are probably that good you are prepared to take a chance on but most of them we'd be mad to take them if they don't want to come.

True but pretty good sources. Regardless, refusing to play for an interstate side is really bad form that speaks volumes about his integrity, and moreso the integrity of the AFL who allowed it to happen.

I'm a bit undecided. He deserves it based on his form but I'm concerned about this hindering the development of our youngsters, Newman, O'Riordon, etc. Hawthorn don't make that mistake.

Re Cyril: plenty of non indigenous players get poached and given scholarships to elite schools. Based on exceptional ability and potential rather than skin colour.

I know many people at Scotch College, so although I don't know him personally, I have a very good understanding about him.

I know a number of people who went to Scotch College and I've also met Cyril a number of times and know his father very well. If it wasn't for the fact that your comment is so off base that it can be dismissed as laughable, then it would be offensive.

You can discount Cyril. He said he wouldn't play for a non-Victorian club. He's a spoiled little brat who only got the Scotch College scholarship because of his skin colour and has no appreciation for the opportunities he was given.

Look no offence, but I find that very distasteful. It's the sort of casual racism that Adam Goodes called out and it seems some of us have not evolved since.

How about next time you have the opportunity to speak to Nick Smith, you muster the courage to ask him about Cyril? If you're really courageous, to Nick your theory about why Cyril got the scholarship. If you're not game to do that, perhaps refrain from posting about the topic.

I like the fact that Macca is going to transition to a coaching role "post his playing career"

The cynic in me takes this to mean the Swans / Macca have an option to transition him before the end of next year.

If O-Flo is banging down the door, rather than dropping Macca to the NEAFL, he can start coaching.

And he'll have 300+ games and another premiership by then!

If someone is drafted, they can't be forced to play. They are within their right just to not play, or simply retire.

SS, you know that some schools have scholarships that are designated for indigenous kids. That's the whole point of them.

Great news about McVeigh, has been a significant player for us this year and will be important this week and hopefully further weeks.

Transitioning into coaching with us is also good. How many former captains are now involved off field? Harley, Kirk, Maxfield, Carroll and now McVeigh. This is high quality of person as well as footy nous.

Swans almost always make very good decisions off field.

That's why the "transition to coaching" is genius. If he has gone on too long he can stop playing / start coaching.

Yes, and if he gets pushed out by a few of our talented youngsters, he can transition to coaching in the NEAFL, by playing the role of onfield mentor. And though that statement probably sounds a bit sarcastic, it's not meant to be, as I do think that experienced players going round in the NEAFL serves a valuable and underrated function. They can certainly help the youngsters with things like; team structure, motivation, emotional regulation, etc.
