The name of the game is to get our first pick ahead of Blakey being named, so this would be good, and worth giving up something for.
Lloyd + Swans first round pick (say 10) + a second round pick (maybe 33 or 35)
for
pick 3 (+ maybe a late pick if we get lucky - say 3rd or 4th round)
That would work for the Swans, and for GC they keep a pick in the top 10, plus get a quality player and the chance at a another quality player in the 2nd round in a fairly deep draft.Comment

That would be a win/win situation for both clubs. Gold Cost would get Lloyd who is a young gun and only drop from pick 3 to 10. They would still get a good player at that pick. In a normal draft I wouldn't be happy with the Swans doing this but considering this will elevate us above Blakeys bid position, say 6-12, then we get two players who are likely to be very good. We would need to make sure that we have enough points for Blakey.Hanners is going nowhere and nor should he.
The bigger discussion should be surrounding Lloyd. July has been and gone and he still hasn’t signed. My gut tells me that he is gone to Gold Coast. As much as I’m a fan of his, if we could upgrade our first pick of 9 or 10 to Gold Coast’s 2 or 3 then that would be easier to take.
Sam Walsh/Izak Rankine + Nick Blakey = ????????????Comment

The Suns will also likely get a compo pick for Lynch of 3. So, even if they do the trade as above they will have pick 2, and 10ish.The name of the game is to get our first pick ahead of Blakey being named, so this would be good, and worth giving up something for.

It would be nice but I can't see it happening. For all the talk of this year's draft being a "superdraft", it seems like that is based on the top 6-7 players and that the talent drops off to a similar level to most years. Indeed, while everyone was drooling over the 2018 draft last year and wanting their clubs to swap 2017 high picks for 2018 high picks, the first round of 2017 is shaping up very nicely, and far deeper than just the top handful of picks. Each of the top 9 picks has looked very impressive at times this season, and then you have a few others, like Richards and Higgins, adapting well to senior footy and looking like they might become very good players. The name of the game is to get our first pick ahead of Blakey being named, so this would be good, and worth giving up something for.

I just don't see a club downgrading a top 7 pick unless they secure a much better player than Lloyd or a good handful of later first round picks (which we don't have to offer).Comment

Buddy years hardly a failure. 2 Grand Finals- media lately saying we should have won at least 2 flags with him. Not superman. Another example of shallow journalism as if one player can make all the difference now with the way the game is played.Comment

Were we to lose Lloyd and/or Hannebery, surely we'd be interested in getting in some experienced midfielders? Or we'd be where we are now, playing too many kids.
BTW Jon Ralph in the Hun Category: | Herald Sun reckons "St Kilda wouldn’t need to give up the world — maybe a high future second-round pick."
Being completely ruthless, if we don't think he's going to get back close to his 2016 form, we can find a taker for him with his entire salary, and we have a free agent replacement of equal quality lined up, then why wouldn't we do it. Other than this isn't the way Sydney has done things in the past.
I do wonder (again) if we have plans to pluck some players out of the Doggies at the end of the year - Libba, Dahlhaus, Wallis?Comment

I've heard that the top 10-12 are exceptional. I think we'll keep Lloyd, but it will cost us more than we'd hoped. It would be nice but I can't see it happening. You are probably right. I think there is so much luck in the draft that talk of "superdrafts" is only meaningful after the event. Nevertheless, pick 33 or 35 gives quite a good chance of getting a good player, even a great player. It would be nice but I can't see it happening. I suspect you might be right about the deal though. Perhaps Hannebery + picks 9 & 35 for picks 3 & 25 would be more likely. (Not that I think we should trade Hannebery).Comment

Jeez how is that Hawthorn can chase all of these players yet we were told we "can't everyone" and sanctions imposed on us!!!Tom Brown on Triple M (Melb) this morning reporting that Melbourne were interested in Dan Hannebery up to 3 weeks ago but have since gone cold, whilst intimating the Swans may've thought about it. Dunno the validity of this, because it then makes signing a long term contract worthless (in Dan's case up to the end of 2021). Has to work both ways you'd think?
Tom also reported GC are seeking long term commitment from Steven May by season's end. If he doesn't they will put him up for trade now to maximum his value rather than wait till next year when he becomes a free agent. Collingwood & Hawthorn are apparently already into chasing May, just wondering if we will be as well now?

This was the sort of deal I was speculating could happen if the pieces all fell into place, because we can replace Hannebery with a top rated midfielder from the draft plus get Blakey, who can also play midfield. To get some more speed into the team we have to let some high quality players go. We still have plenty of ball winning midfielders, and I would be counting on Dawson to be part of the regular rotation now that he's in the senior team.
I don't think Lloyd will be leaving. 'Player wants more money' is a fairly common theme during contract talks. Nearly all players end up signing with their existing clubs when it's just about money.
I think we will be looking at a very different senior team next year if all the injured players regain fitness.
I'm not at all concerned that some say we have to win a premiership while Franklin is still playing. It's great to have the best forward of the modern era on our side, but it's not the be all and end all. That we have been recruiting AFL quality players at a high rate over the past half dozen years is much more of an indicator of how we will go over the next half dozen years. When we can have guys like Ronke, McCartin and O'Riordan come into the side and make a real contribution right away is a good indication that we are going okay and things should be fine moving forward.Comment

I think we have to do anything we can to get both Blakey and either Walsh or Hately. We need another big bodied midfielder desperately. Either of those two boys could make an immediate impact.
I personally think that GCS will take a different draft approach this year. I believe they will go after established players in exchange for picks.
For two reasons.
1. Their high draft picks get poached back to their home states within a few years. So that is not exactly working for them.
2. I don't think Dew would want to go through a rebuild in his first senior gig. Could be a career killer.
So i think their 1st round pick/s will be on the table. If we can strike the right trade package of players and/or pick exchanges i think we can get their pick 3 from them. Players that i would be willing to sacrifice for the long term betterment of the team would be Lloyd, Reid and Rohan. Though I realise Reid and Rohan are contracted so agreement would be needed.Comment
