Very much so!!!. I recall Pitura jumping up & down wanting to join Richmond (who were a power house in the 70's) and South refused to clear him. I'm sure he then quit the club for a short period & then returned to complete the 1974 season, which South then agreed to clear him to Richmond. In exchange we received Brian "Whale" Roberts, Graham Teasdale, Francis Jackson & 45K which was big money back then.
Arguably the best trade we've ever done. All 3 players were great successes. The whale finished 4th or thereabouts in the 76 Brownlow. I remember just how huge he looked when I first saw him play in red & white. Tom Hafey later said he was filthy the club traded him because moral amongst the players dropped enormously as the Whale was very popular.
Teaser went on to win the 77 Brownlow & Jackson was a very solid CHB with a long penetrating left boot. I remember he, Browning & Rantall (who returned from North) formed a formidable half back line in 76.Last edited by KSAS; 26 September 2019, 04:43 PM.Comment

If the Giants win the GF, the Melbourne power brokers will be arguing that the northern clubs get too many concessions. This could negatively affect the Swans, particularly in regard to academy concessions. The AFL prefer that the northern clubs are only there to provide a player development zone for the rest of the league.
There doesn't even seem to be any AFL embarrassment that the GWS Giants are playing the Richmond Suns in the GF.Comment

(Of course, we won't mention the Fields/Daniher situation!)Comment

The more we talk about this, the more I can't see why we would trade Papley, even for North's first round pick. Not worth it.
Incidentally there is zero chance Pap's sits out for years. There'd have to be compelling reasons for that to happen and, if there were, I imagine we'd have heard about it by now and only in that case would we be looking at a trade. All opinions are not equal. Geelong played hard ball on Kelly at the end of last season refusing to trade him unless they got a good deal and he produced a brilliant season for them this year. Right up in the Brownlow Count. I recall that he got 3 Brownlow votes in both games against us this year!
It looks like he will head West now but they will still get as much if not more for him now as they would have last year. A lesson for us in dealing with Papley?

It’s interesting (to me at least) that back in the early 1900s-1930’s players would sit out a season or two to get to their club of choice. Different eraComment

If Jones goes to St Kilda, it's more likely to be in exchange for a future pick if the Swans will accept one.
Saints set for monster Trade Period with crafty Port forward in their sights
Players linked to St Kilda: Sam Gray (Port), Paddy Ryder (Port), Bradley Hill (Fremantle), Zak Jones.
St Kilda's picks: 5, 55, 67 and 77
There's no way the Saints would be recruiting all those players with what they have. Who's going?"Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

Good pics on BF trade thread of Papley, Hayward-Florent, Mills, Harry, McCartin, Ronke holidaying in Spain. Another of a heap of NEAFL players plus Blakey in Bali I think (no pre marital sex fellas!)
Papley looking very happy as a Swan amongst other loyal Swans, or maybe it's Norf's $900k that has him so happy?

Trained the season with his former club if I remember correctly. Couldn't play because he was contracted to GWS.Comment
