Is he going to chuck a tanty if he doesn't get traded?

Hard to see him leaving if Sydney can't get overs for him. Pretty sure Pappers said he would stay if a good deal for Sydney couldn't get done. Would like to see the Swans hold him accountable and make him see out his contact. It's not the first time we've made a player do that. Didn't the same thing happen with Pebbles?
As far as Daniher is concerned, I think alot of moves are revolving around this decision. So again, so much noise from the Melbourne media about it. I wouldn't be surprised if that just consolidates his decision to move.Comment

I think that by this time tomorrow we will know whether Daniher is serious about a move. Their B&F is tonight and he will make a call tomorrow. My gut tells me he will stay at Essendon for now.
I've thought a lot in the past 48 hours (probably too much) about our current predicament with players like Papley, Jones and Daniher and a middling list. My conclusion (which will no doubt influence our Club decision-makers 555) is that PATIENCE is the key. Our current list profile is young and at least 12 months away from finals. We can go to the Draft with potentially 2 first round (if Papley is traded) and 2 second round picks (assuming a second rounder is traded for Jones). That can help build a real contending team going forward on the basis of what we already have and what we draft this year. As others say, we can potentially get Daniher next year for nothing. It will mean another year out of finals contention which our supporters can wear but give us a real premiership shot going forward. Just my thoughts.Comment

I was not asking what Papley's reasons for moving are - I understand these reasons aren't really in the public domain at this stage. Rather, I was asking what does "genuine" mean in this context? What constitutes a "genuine" reason? The ordinary dictionary meaning is something like "real" (I haven't checked) but I don't think that's what people are meaning. It seems people are meaning a "legitimate" or "worthy" reason. These are very slippery and subjective and everyone would have their own ideas about what is "legitimate". Still, it's interesting to know what we are thinking would be legitimate and some of you have expressed some views. The main one that comes to my mind is having a family member seriously ill or in need. But I accept there would be a million other scenarios that might potentially satisfy me also. All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

I think people are overreacting a bit here demanding to know his reasons to request a trade. It's personal, let's just leave it at that.
Besides, it's another ROK situation where he will honour his contract unless Carlton can offer something the Swans are happy with.
Pick 9 + Michael Gibbons? Mature-aged rookie, won the VFL's Best & Fairest twice, and can play midfield & forward.Comment

What constitutes 'genuine'? How does the club prove it and therefore 'accept' it as genuine? What redress has the club got if they decide the player is not completely 'geniune' and it's just a ruse for the player to get what he wants?
His girlfriend wanting him to return home for her convenience is not a 'genuine' reason in my book, especially when cashed up Melbourne clubs have come knocking with big money offers to prise a contracted player out of a non Vic club back to his 'home' state.....perhaps the only 'genuine' emotion we're seeing here might well be greed.
Having given Paps the chance to play top level footy in the first place, after all the other clubs, including those who are fighting for his services now rejected him when they had the chance to score him cheap, I don't think our club owes Tom any favours.
If these reports of you picking Carlton are true, you disappoint me hugely Tom Papley.....Comment

I think both the Papley and Jones situations are fluid atm and could fall either way.
Someone suggested that Papley was just putting on a show for his girlfriend and he really wants to stay a Swan. He knows a deal can't be made, because the Swans will want 2 first round picks, which Carlton certainly won't do. I could be wrong, but I'm leaning toward this being the case, probably because I know that's what I would do. What could be better than a young bloke with money than having a girlfriend in another city?
I don't think Jones has any particularly strong personal reasons for wanting to go 'home' to Melbourne. It's unusual for someone who has a regular spot in the 22 and is wanted by his club to ask to be traded. It could be Jones' status in the midfield hierarchy, with Hewett, Florent, Dawson and Rowbottom pushing him down the pecking order. Over the long run, this could make his contract negotiations difficult, as his importance to the team lessens. At St. Kilda, he would move close to the top of heap, especially with Steven moving on. If a satisfactory deal can't be reached, I think we can get him to sign on for another 2 years when he can go where he wants as a free agent.
Jones was taken at pick 15 in the 2013 draft, which went quite well for us. We got a good AFL player with all 4 ND picks: Jones, Hewett, Nankervis and Aliir. Looking back on the draft, we should be happy getting Jones at pick 15. It looks about right. I think that's what Jones is worth, i.e. around a pick 15. Since we should be open to 2020 picks, a deal could be reached without the Saints having to give up a 1st rounder, but rather something like a second and third rounder, both of which could be 2020 picks. We could also give back one of our later picks from this year.
Carlton and St. Kilda are involved in a lot of trades and it might be hard to get a deal done early, if at all. Neither one might have enough material left once the easier deals are made.
. . . . . .
The go home factor is such a furphy. The media talk about being drafted by Gold Coast as if it required the player to move to Uzbekistan. The Melbourne media fuel the fire by characterizing playing for the Gold Coast as some kind of penance that has to be endured until a trade home can be worked out.
I wonder how the Melbourne media would rank the following outcomes:- ACL injury
- Achilles tendon rupture
- Lisfranc injury
- Drafted by Gold Cost

Jimmy Bartel on Talking Footy a while back said rather than give GC priority picks, give them administration support first to get the structures in place.
Set up decent facilities, get the medical support running like a professional club, apparently it takes days to get scans and expert advice.
They need someone like Andrew Ireland to act as a consultant that will set up a focused administration to get the right foundations in place. Someone like Ireland who has come from successful clubs could help build a culture that players want to be part of. May also need to get some additional support for Stewie in the short term.
Then once all this is in place some draft picks that must to be traded for experienced bodies.
Or just move them to Tassie.spriteComment

In other words.....play hardball! That's all we're expecting from our club.
Not to be kind 'to the player that wants to reject you' and get shafted again by our own 'kindness'.....read 'stupidity'. It's all too easy for players to squeal 'personal reasons' these days to get what they want......effing AFLPA. Seems they largely work for the Melbourne clubs or for players that want to get to Melbourne clubs.Comment

Mason Wood is a real mixed bag of real talent and poor or inconsistent execution. He has good pace and when his kicking is on, he can be a very valuable player on the wing or up forward. he's had some injuries which set him back a few times which clouds the assessment. he's a reasonable player to be involved as part of a Jones trade. He's another lefty, which we seem to have plenty.Comment
