They're like vultures, and the more voracious the better.
Strong post, although it's worth keeping in mind that the supplements saga blighted most of Joe's initial years at the club, and 2017 is the year the banned players were back and Essendon started moving forward.

None of the commentators creaming themselves during the GF about the ex-GC talent playing for Richmond (Prestia, Lynch, Caddy) seemed to realise the implications of what they were saying.
Yes, some very smug quotes from Lethlean here. https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/...07-p52yh4.html

Saw something interesting/funny/worrying the other day actually:

Joe Daniher: 25 yo. 104 games. 188 goals.
Kurt Tippett (when traded to Sydney): 25 yo. 104 games. 188 goals.

The Victorian whinging about the NSW/QLD clubs in particular seems like a reflex action - it's somewhat at odds with reality.
At the moment the Gold Coast is functioning as a feeder club for the Victorian clubs, the revolving door at GC effectively allowed Richmond to outflank the draft and pick up 3 additional premiership players.
The go-home factor will never disappear completely (even the Swans suffer from it) but unless the AFL can get GC set up properly, then giving GC high end draft picks may just increase the number of players the Gold Coast will be warehousing for the Victoian clubs.

I found it distasteful watching the Ch 7 Trade Show this evening, talking Ben King going to St Kilda in 2021 as if it's fate accompli with Brendan Goddard suggesting Essendon will have him on their radar as well, to which Andy Mahr responded "that will make St Kilda supporters nervous". No regard whatsoever to the GC fan base as small as it may be. Thus further adding to the GC just being a Vic warehouse as mentioned above by Ruck n Roll. Paul Roos was strong last week when the AFL announced the GC compensation picks, saying that it would do nothing to help the club retain players. He thought it was strange the AFL decided not to touch their salary cap, when it is one area which could help them retain their stars.

It was also mentioned the Swans had planned getting Daniher over a year ago (comparing it to Buddy), believing they had offloaded Daniel Hannebery to St Kilda to make salary cap space for him. Whilst they acknowledged all clubs target players years in advance, I found it annoying they only raised this topic with Daniher's trade request and no mention of Carlton with Papley who is on a 4 year contract! Like many have said here, no problem with Vic media when Vic clubs target elite players from over the border but they get up in arms on the few occasions when it goes the other way.

The hypocrisy yesterday was truly breathtaking. I was reading The Age, as you do, and the list of headlines had Dildoro launching into us followed by the chummy boys at St Kilda already salivating over King.

The all afl feels particularly #%^$ed up at present. That AFL assistance package to Gold Coast is just more talent that will come back to Melbourne and not even in the long term. I think GC is cooked and Gil lacks the motivation or insight to really solve it.

Most of all I fear for the academies next year.

This year I fear we are going to pay a very hefty price for Daniher. He is no Lockett, Hall or Franklin.
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

Apparenlty Carlton are the big winners of the trade period so far even though nothing has happened! However it does appear the club has softened it's stance on Papley, no longer saying he's off the table.

Dixon is right about Papley though . Where are going to find someone to replace him ? Pick 9 feels cheap for a required gun small forward with great speed and the ability to play midfield and get clearances . He was a big part of our future , part of our leadership group ! And they think we’ll even send our second rounder back ?

If it’s just pick 9 we should hold onto him . Might even change his mind about leaving , who knows . If they want him that bad they’ll pay up or try again next year fellas!

Every time the Swans facebooked over the weekend regarding Daniher, the response from the average punter was overwhelming... DON'T GET HIM.
We're not rehab, and the way essenscum are talking, he's a CONTRACTED player and won't be going anywhere... just like how Tom Harley is talking about Paps.

Seriously, what's with the kids?? A contract is a contract. You signed it, you honour it. Just because your team is crap and have the whole banned drug saga still hanging over their heads; just because your girlfriend lives in Melbourne; and you Zak Jones, just because you want to be a "gun midfielder" ((a) you're not Josh Kennedy; and (b) you're much better suited to the half-back flank); is no reason to leave a signed contract. Get in the lawyers, I say.
In the real world, the kiddies job jump like no ones business. Here one day, sickie the next, carer's day the next, a day off their (unearned) holidays, then they just quit.
No wonder they can't buy a house.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

I just listened to an interview with Papley's Manager, Scott Lucas. He seemed to be confident that a deal will be done there so poor Papps can be closer to his beloved Bunyip. He also manages Tom McCartin and said that he is very happy in Sydney.

This is what Gary Buckenara has to say about the value of Joe Daniher and the quality of the Bombers list!

                              Category: | Herald Sun

Essendon does not have a genuine A-grade star and its premiership hopes for the near future are fading fast... the optimism surrounding Essendon’s list and premiership hopes in the near future depend on what happens with Joe Daniher and Orazio Fantasia.

Daniher wants to be traded to Sydney and at his best, pre-groin injuries, he would have been worth two top-10 picks. But he’s not any more. He’s played 11 games in two years.

Essendon will still push for two top-10 picks given Daniher is contracted for next season but pick 5, plus maybe a swap of later picks, would be a good result because that pick 5 is going to be very valuable in this draft.
