Bit more trivia ... Ben Holland is often confused with Luke Holland who is his twin brother and who injured his ACL playing for North Adelaide the year after Ben was drafted. He was fun to ACL rehab with

Actually, to be truthful, the twins aren’t often confused for each other as Ben is a towering 198cm, while Luke is only 183 (still towered over me in the gym)

Luke & Nick both became lawyers.

Lachie Neale, Matt Rowell, Devon Smith, Kieren Jack (ok so he’s retired)

Unless we go on some sort of a winning streak, we should be able to have a top 5 pick. We could use the pick in this draft, trade it for a pick in the 2021 draft, or use it to recruit a player from another club.
I heard some ‘expert’ recently (possibly Liam Pickering) suggest the 2021 draft crop is going to be a belter, So perhaps you’re second suggestion has some merit. Especially if we can get a second rounder this year thrown in. There may be a club looking to get a first round pick in before a bid comes on their academy choice.

Why wouldn’t we try to do exactly that ourselves? Especially if we’ve got a top 5 pick. It would be very risky to swap it unless we could be confident the other club would be bottom 5 in 2021.

Besides we’ll be using our first rounder in some way to get Daniher.

Trading future picks is fraught with danger, many clubs have been burnt when the high pick they thought they were trading for ends up mid teens.

We need talent in now! Pick the best mid we can with our first pick, match Campbell and Gulden. That's three very good additions this off season, worry about 2021 next year as who knows what will happen between now and then given the horror show currently playing out in Victoria!

Perhaps due to the heavily compromised nature of this years draft due to all the likely academy and NGA picks that will be taken in the first / second round. That and the fact we’re virtually guaranteed to get two players that are tipped be first rounders ( or maybe second rounder in Gulden’s case ).

If it looks better for us long term to try and trade up into next years draft I have no issue with it. Yes it’s a gamble but we’d still be looking at two first round picks, which could be turned into one very high one.

Surely you don’t think we should still go after Daniher, and if we are, why would we give up a first round pick for him? He is an RFA this year. The Bombers would likely match any reasonable contract offer but we should let them. He’s not worth anymore than 500k a season now, and that’s being generous.

Would people trade our first rounder for Darcy Moore? I suspect the Pies would want more, but it would be a start I imagine. Personally, I would provided it didn't impact our chances of getting the young academy fellas.

Without any real evidence to go on, my impression of the rumours a while back, that Moore was interested in moving to Sydney, was that it was just a rumour. A rumour that was possibly put out by his management, in order to get a few extra dollars on his contract. Since he got a lucrative contract, I doubt if he's moving anytime soon.

Living up in Brisbane and following the Lions closely as my second team, I wonder what people's thoughts on Archie Smith are? Very athletic, plays well in Neafl but limited opportunities behind Big O and Stef. Also, Alex Witherden as a rebounding defender? He's definitely more advanced than any of our young rebounding defenders and has had 2 excellent seasons leading into 2020. For whatever reason, has dropped behind Zac Bailey and Noah Answerth this year.

Actually, the story was we were into him and he chose to stay but only signed a 2 year contract.

Yes to Witherden, not so sure about the other two

If the club's willing to draft then wait for a ruck to mature, rather than buying ready made - Riley Thilthorpe looks ok

2 metres and 99kg already, yet plays like a 4th midfielder. Not a disaster in front of goals, and from SA - so less of a flight risk.

Don't think he will want to return to help the Crows rebuild? LOL Trading Greenwood who's leading league tackles, hard ball gets etc to GC for a packet of chips, one of the dumb trades that has Crows lower than Ground Zero.

Reading the Top 25 draftees on the AFL website, eight of those are tied to clubs, including of course Campbell and Gulden. Going to make the early part of the draft very messy. I notice LOLNorf have put out Thomas for the year, going the tank already! Worried now about our pick before matching for Campbell, we'll move ahead of Hawks if we win this week.

A horribly depressing article in the Age: https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl-...24-p55f24.html

"The Sydney Swans, one of the most admired football clubs in Australia, are in the early stages of their biggest crisis in a quarter of a century... The bad news is that they are at a low ebb and do not look like threatening for a premiership for several seasons. Their dedicated red and white army is about to have to show how loyal it really is."

Is it really going to be that bad?

The article contains this interesting bit of information:

"They sit at the tip of a healthy AFL iceberg in NSW. The code claims more than 250,000 participants in the state, which makes it twice the size of rugby league and more than seven times bigger than rugby union."
