An even better example, in that they were salary cap dumps. I loved Hanners as much as any player of the past decade, and it was sad to see him go, and his injuries since the snipers at the Dogs got him in the '16 grand final have been cruel. But the Swans' decision looks right in hindsight.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

Incidentally, it was nice to see the Suns made a good drafting decision (there have been way too many misses) - Wil Powell who was a shock pick 19 in 2017 (Bolt from the blue: Suns' shock pick at 19 (afl.com.au)) has come second in their B&F this year behind Touk Miller: Gun Sun Touk Miller rewarded for record-breaking season with maiden B&F (afl.com.au).Comment

]I think the problems at the Suns are less about bad draft decisions over the years, and more about an inability to develop players properly and to hold onto them post their first few seasons. There are numerous ex-Suns players who have played good footy elsewhere. Names that readily spring to mind are Lynch, Prestia, May, O'Meara, Caddy, Saad, Lyons, Hickey and Dixon. Put those guys into their starting line up and they would be very competitive. All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

I agree it's far from their only problem but the Suns have made a lot of poor list management decisions including drafting and trading (overpaying to get players in, doing poor pick swaps, you name it). It's good to see them hit paydirt with an outside the box decision.
I fully understand the intent behind that approach, and feel that it makes sense (especially for a club like the Suns), but they have got so many of those trades 'wrong' over the years. The plastics have done a lot better in that regard and reaped the rewards of it.Last edited by mcs; 6 September 2021, 04:31 PM."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

Too simplistic to say he is being mercenary, sorry.Comment

I understand it was a little more complex I think than Tom suggested but broadly correct.
All players took I think it was around a 3.5% haircut originally which accounted for a reasonable part of the original cut in the salary cap cut. But the overall cut (in a % terms) was beyond that per say of course. A few clubs asked players to take an additional cut to manage the impact, but most clubs have tried to absorb it per say. We were not one of the clubs that asked players to take more of it - so hence I think we are in that situation of really needing to know what the cap will be before we make the final tough calls.
It is ‘per se’, not ‘per say’, and it doesn’t read like a proper use of the term in either sentence (replace each use with “intrinsically” and see how it reads).Comment

Out:
Gray, Brand, Reid, Ronke, Ling, Taylor (he is contracted until end of '22 but maybe trade him out), Naismith, Stephens. We can get a good trade for Stephens and retain Hewett.
We only have 3 draft picks plilus rookies. So maybe 5. That would bring our list down a bit to maybe 38. Enough until Kennedy and Bud retire. Then we can start building a greater base in next year's draft.

North Melbourne’s delistings today include a former pick 3 and 15. Such a cruel lucky dip it seems.Comment

I don't think they are paying players overs just to be able to get to 90% of the cap! I suspect they have a fairly tight cap because they have a lot of talent on their list, even if most of them are young. If they were in that incredible situation they could still use the money to lure players from elsewhere instead of overpaying their own e.g. they could have made a play for Crouch, who was relatively gettable. All opinions are not equal.
