It is really hard to know how much Covid has hurt players like Stephens and Gould. Stephens looked like he was going to be super towards the end of 2019 especially in that last game against Geelong. He just looked nervous when he played this year which was totally opposite to the other young players who were brave and confident with their run and ball use. I'd really like to hold onto him so he can have a full pre-season (which he didn't have last year) and a chance to play consistent games learning the system and some confidence. He's super talented and, for me, it's too early to cut the cord.

That might already be the problem. He wants more than the minimum and I wouldn't blame him for rejecting the minimum. If his manager is doing his job and has made the calls, then Dylan would already know where he stands. I expect he will leave, but it might just be a case of massaging the cap to fit him in based on other delistings.Comment

Not Stephens, who burned it up whenever he was back at VFL/scratch match level, but froze in the seniors. But based on what we saw last year, if he can get his head right, he could be as good as any of our youngsters. JMac is the clubhouse leader of our young brigade, and seems to play with absolute confidence. So too Errol. If they can unlock that in Dylan, look out.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

I wonder if the reduction in interchange numbers impact on some players. Dylan seemed to only get around 60% game time. If he is deemed say no.22 in ranking on game day it makes sense to give more influential players more game time.Comment

I wonder if the rapid progress of others has had a negative impact on Stephens? It's almost as if others have taken what could have been his spot.
Matt Rendell suggested they offer us pick 23 for him... which would be unders for his potential, but not unreasonable for what he's delivered so far.
I think my heart wants us to keep him and for a minimally covid affected 2022 season to allow him to blossom. Ditto Gould and even Ling. I suspect Ling won't be at the Swans in 2022.Comment

Pick 23 for Stephens would be a reasonable return all things considered. But I hope we can convince him to stay and fight for a place."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

If this logic holds, maybe we can try and get some similar underperforming early draft picks from other clubs, and hope that the underperforming was because of covid.

You wonder ? Mate its obvious that others have taken his spot . Jmac and Gulden on a wing and Chad inside have all blown straight past him . Still think theres something there with Stephens and needs time , would play him inside next yearComment

Hard agree. There will be some players (like Gould) where the coaches will need to apply their instincts to work out whether COVID affected their development.

Not quite correct. For it to be after our second rounder, Hewett's contract at his new club would need to be 3 x $600k for example see Brad Crouch last year, he's not getting that offered in today's tight salary cap environment. A pick in the 40's would be the best we're likely to seeComment

I would respectfully disagree about Dyl burning it up in reserves, at least in the games I viewed (all VFL, obviously saw none of scratchies). At VFL level, again looked tentative, overshadowed by Squizzy, Gray, Clarke and COR (played a bit of midfield at VFL level). I guess that's why I'm not optimistic on him - looks to lack ticker. If we could get a first rounder back, I'd jump at the opportunity.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment
