The main thing for us is for him to know Norf are hanging out there. It’s not our way and we tend to be sensible traders, but him and his manager knowing Norf have the cap space and incentive they’d get a good pick for him if he then left them, will put a bit of poo in his pants and have them pushing for a decent deal for us. Least he could do for disgracing Troy Luff’s jersey.

I am going to assume McDonald will be a big part of our best 22 next year. He probably won’t play all games but they will want him playing 70%. Someone needs to be moved from the forward line to accomodate him. We will need a second ruck so it’s not going to be McLean/Amartey. Therefore, for me, the obvious choice is to push Heeney into the middle more. Not permanent but 80%.
2022 Forward Structure
1. Main man - Buddy
2. Fwd/Rck - McLean/Amartey
3. 3rd tall - McDonald
4. Medium - Hayward
5. Small attack focus - Papley
6. Small pressure focus - Wicks
7. Half forward - Gulden/Campbell

Listening to Tom Harley, doesn’t look if we can keep either Jordan or George, unfortunately. It seems Jordan’s request came as a surprise, but if negotiations were ongoing for a while, I can’t see how this could be the case.
A bit different with George, as if it is true that we didn’t make an offer, what choice did he have?Comment

Richmond got an end of 2nd round compo pick for Mabior Chol who went to the Suns on a 4 year contract, same as Hewett. I haven't seen anything on Chol's salary, but can't imagine it being more than the $450k pa that Hewett is getting from Carlton, so assume that we will also get an end of 2nd rounder for Hewett. So roughly a pick 40.
By signing Sinclair, I think we are not in the ruckman market during this trade period. We could have waited on Sinclair, but given that he's signed already, I suppose that means we've already decided to wait until the draft or next season to boost ruck stocks.
I'm surprised that none of the trade gurus have proposed Adelaide's 2021 + 2022 2nd rounders for Dawson, but instead keep talking about moving up their pick 23 to something in the teens. The 2 second rounders seem fair and are available now. I don't see why the Dawson deal can't be done quickly if Adelaide are willing to part with their 2022 2nd round pick, but it's not even mentioned.Comment

I’m also speculating they asked him about need to go back to SA before he left and he told them it was a non issue.
The club normally plays with a straight bat and if there is a reason for a player to want to go home they will acknowledge the fact.
2 things Tom Harley said caught my ear (1) he praised JD’s character, said he is a good person (2) he used the present tense and said he IS a big part of our plans going forward.
I don’t know if Tom’s trying to convey to JD that he has not burnt his bridges. It’s all quite mystifying tbh
I also think the club knows how good he’s going to be?Comment

I think they’ll give Amartey and McLean every opportunity next year and see where Naismith is at in 12 months.
But, Realistically none of those are likely to be suitable as long-term replacements for Hickey.Comment

Is there room without the salary cap rules for some creative payments?
For example, are we allowed to bring Max Gawn to the club as a playing ruck coach that we pay him mostly through the football operations budget?
Can Bont come to the club in a dual role as a player and coach of the VFL side. This would allow a good portion of this salary to be paid through the football operations budget saving the salary cap.
Are these sort of playing / coaching deals permitted?
I would love to hear from Faunac8, MCS, Ludwig and others who have displayed great knowledge of salary cap issues.Comment

Solid two year apprenticeship under Hickey and Sinclair and then hoepfully a 10 year playerComment

Re Dawson, I don't think we'll miss has as much as we think.
I think we have perhaps the best young half back in the league in Nick Blakey and Horse has finally found his right spot I feel. His run and carry and atheticism are real assets. The only thing he really needs to do is start clunking a few contested marks which was a real strength for Dawson./Comment

Bangalore your ability to look for creative opportunities to improve our playing list is to be admired however those type of deals have been practically impossible to implement for about 50 years . The recent popular trend of playing contracts being offered to “ player coaches “ such as Luke Hodge and Jordan Lewis etc has been seen as a positive by many but they were also closely monitored by the AFL and all payments were included in the salary cap.
Most of the creativity involved in AFL player payments happens far removed from the actual club and associated entities and any reference to them as player payments is quickly dismissed.
Please ignore Geelong Adelaide and West Coast property developers , McDonald franchisees and real estate consultants etc as they are obviously genuine business opportunities.Comment
