The additional ~15 picks is the premium to get him a year early. I tend to think it's worth it, given we want to compete for a top 4 spot next year and we have near zero ruck depth.Last edited by MattW; 12 October 2021, 09:03 PM.Comment

Fox reporting we rolled over and took the Dees pick for Dawson

Ok, Michael Gleeson reports that we're accepting Melbourne future first rounder flat for Dawson.
Michael Gleeson on Twitter: "After much gnashing of teeth Swans agree to accept future first from Crows - the melb pick - for Dawson. No other picks involved. Agreed tonight. Will go through 2pm tomorrow."
Undervalued, but the reality.
That'll guarantee at least two games a round with strong interest next year!Comment

Yep, reports everywhere that we've accepted Dees future first rounder for Dawson with no other picks attached.
Like Liz said earlier, we really didn't have a lot of bargaining power and pretty much had to accept so let's hope the Dees do what they have done so often and put in a shocker next year!
Over to you now Ladhams!

Also 2 first rounders next year may be vital in getting someone outstanding. Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

I think at this stage I'd just take the Melbourne future first. It could be fun having a team to death watch next season. Melbourne were great this year but I'm not particularly confident they'll back it up. They had a pretty good run with injury, particularly with their best half dozen players. And if they fall, I think they could fall in a heap based on past years' performances. But I'd leave Adelaide with the message that we believe we've been short-changed.
As for Port, I'd tell them that pick 31 is all that's on the table. I'd tell them we've just been screwed over by Adelaide and we're not taking it from them too. I'd remind them that we traded them Aliir last year for a worse pick. And that (at least according to the AFL site) that we've agreed to take his full final year payments onto our books. If they have their eyes on someone like O'Meara (as is rumoured), that might clear the space they need.
And as you say it’s pick 31 or nowt for Ladhams…..Comment

I do hope that we have re-signed Sam Wicks. I mean, if the Crows are going to play Dawson off the half back flank, then Wicks is the one most likely of our forwards to bury him in the turf. Or maybe Heeney? Perhaps McLean if he gets too close?Comment

I don't agree we have near zero ruck depth. Sinclair, while not great, will always give a wholesome effort if called upon. Amartey hasn't done more than relief ruck so far, but he might be capable of more if needed. We could also give Reid another year.
The reality is that if we are going to contend next year, we need Hickey to play the majority of games. But we do have enough in reserve to pick the odd game here and there to give him a rest.Comment

That’s disappointing about JD, but clearly we had no other card to play. I’ll be interested to see what else we get up to.
I really hope we don’t overpay for Ladhams.
Still wouldn’t mind us having a crack at Sicily.Comment

Ladhams is young enough to develop well. I think you need two genuine ruckman in your best 22 but one needs to also be able to play up forward. Only time will tell of course but he could be a handy pick upComment

Its an interesting debate as to whether we would have been better off to have accepted Adelaide's early offer of this year's 17 pick or what we ended up with - a most likely low first round pick for next season. Normally, one would say this year's pick is better for the reasons outlined by Ludwig a while back (one year's extra contribution by the selected player) but the uncertainty of the form of players due to Covid interruptions makes it a less clear cut comparison this time. Also, we weren't to know then that Adelaide would subsequently make that huge offer for the No 1 pick that included all of their first rounders.Comment
