There's more in the Hun: Jon Ralph says Ladhams "certain" to be a Swans player after we presented a range of options to Port that put his value in the 25-30 range. Sounds like they just need to choose an option

Ladhams keen to play for Dean Cox after a year at Port in which he only trained with the forward group and there was no official ruck coach...

Ladhams to give up the last backended year of his Port contract and accept a brand new deal at the Swans

He wasn't, but the potential was there. I didn't think he'd get to AA level so quickly - and maybe he wouldn't with us - but I'm not particularly surprised.

It appears that the impetus to move Ladhams out has come from Port, not from Sydney approaching Port or Ladhams and making an enquiry. You do that as a club, you're unlikely to get full value. Look at what happened with the Pies last year (made worse by the fact that other clubs knew they urgently needed to clear cap space). Look at the lack of takers (at least to now) for the mature Hawks players that they've dangled, hoping for decent draft capital in return.

When the Swans decide they want a player and he is keen to come, they generally get the deal done. They have been pursuing Ladhams for 2 years so they are clearly very keen on him. Port seem to be prepared to take number 31 and a pick swap of 16 for 12 for him. The latter is around 200 points on the draft points table (equivalent to pick 55). So its not probably far away from what we would give up to get him. This tells me we will get the deal done today with something approaching that suggested combination.

Also, Ladhams was most definitely not the 3rd ranked ruck at Port this year and would likely be ahead of Hayes again next year at least. They are gambling that Hayes can take over from Lycett in a few years. Ladhams is ready to go and so they let him go now when he has good value.
Many people on this forum (myself included) thought he had it in him.

I guess we did get Hickey out of the deal, who has been a revelation and added more to our team than the retention of Aliir with presumably Sinclair as our first ruck.

If we get another 12 months of elite ruck work out of Hickey followed by another 5-10 years out of Ladhams, them history will say great trading by us.

Our history of developing ruckman from other clubs is good. Jason Ball, Darren Jolly, Mummy, Hickey and even Sinclair became vastly better players with us. Dean Cox should have a good eye for potential. If we get Ladhams, fingers crossed he adds to the list.

Was he commenting in his capacity as a pundit?

If so, then he’s not commenting as an Adelaide football director.

Aliir is incredibly overrated. He looked great as an intercept defender. But once he had to be accountable as a 1:1 defender, he got exposed at the back end of the year. The pick we got, effectively got us either Hickey or Gulden, who I see as better players.

There was a lot to come out of this whole episode that reflects poorly on The Rat.

That Ricciuto was his idol, and he caved at the knees in front of him as a grown man, said we were never dealing with the best or smartest person alive.

Not questioning his knobness but I read it as him reporting what Port are asking for, not what they should be.

I'm not surprised if Port are asking for that. If they are and I were in charge of the Swans negotiating team, I'd just laugh, pack up and walk out of the door.

I do think our BATNA in this circumstance is stronger than theirs, and I think the trade of Aliir a year ago between the same two teams provides as close as you'll ever get to an equivalent trade guiding "fair" value.

I think AA has flaws in his game, which began to be exposed at the end of this year; both as a one on one defender and his disposal. I'll be very interested to see how coaches deal with him in 2022, but I suspect he won't be as highly rated as he was this year.
