Great post TS. There is a lot of hand wringing about our flops in the first round but it really isn't as bad as people make out. We are a victim of our own success - 4 open draft top 10 picks in 20 years (McVeigh, Rohan, Stephens, McDonald).

I think the recency of the Matt Ling selection and it's unfortunate conclusion also hurts our reputation here especially with a number of excellent players being taken after.

Is there any chance our offer to the Bulldogs for Pick 23 is:

Picks 31, 39 & 70 for Picks 23 & 52

By my calculations that’s an extra 30 draft points for the Bulldogs. It’s worth us putting that out there, and if come draft night they haven’t had a better offer, they may as well take it.

Would be particularly good for us as it would leave Collingwood and the Bulldogs holding 10 picks between 31-48 which will get burnt up anyway with their bid matching - so that Pick 52 would end up closer to our original 39 anyway.

Supposedly Geelong are in the box seat for pick 23 and I don’t think the Blues will be looking to offload pick 25 any more.

I was being lazy and originally didn’t bother checking what Geelong could offer.

But they can offer Picks 32 & 50 for Pick 23 and that would be +42 points benefit to the Bulldogs. So we’d have to offer a sweetener with a future pick swap you’d think to trump Geelong.

I think people talking about getting pick 23 are underestimating how much it will cost. I think we might have offered 31 & 39 without change and probably still got outbid. Generally there is a significant premium paid to trade up. Ludwig pointed this out already.

He sounds like an interesting prospect. Won Geelong Falcons B&F

Mitchell Knevitt Draft Profile - Aussie Rules Rookie Me Central (formerly AFL Draft Central)

His athleticism between his speed and endurance, as well as his ability to fly and pull down marks, makes him a difficult prospect to match up on. He can get his hands free in the tackle to handball to the outside, or start deep forward and lead out, burning off an opposition defender. Knevitt is one of those players who might be too strong for a smaller opponent, and too quick for a bigger opponent. Whilst his finesse with his execution could be ironed out - again mostly through composure with ball-in-hand - Knevitt has huge upside in the fact that he is that 193cm with rare athleticism and endurance. If he can get into an elite environment and develop further, he could be a highly damaging prospect at the top level.

Keeping in mind our picks will slide down 3, here are my fearless predictions for the main draft 2021:
Pick 16 Arlo Draper
Pick 31 Rhett Bazzo
Pick 39 Corey Warner
If Angus Anderson gets bid on late, we match with 70 and take a small points deficit next year, otherwise take in rookie draft.

I don’t think the Blues will be looking to offload pick 25 any more.

The retirement of Jones suggests this will be necessary: Carlton insists “no ultimatum” for Jones, will seek extra draft selection (sen.com.au). Carlton hold all of their future picks and have none from other clubs.

Another club with an interesting draft position is Gold Coast. They have pick 3 as their sole pick in the first five rounds, they were intending to redraft some delisted players, but North Melbourne has thrown those plans in some disarray by recruiting one of those players: Roos jump Suns' gun with shock Greenwood steal (afl.com.au). Gold Coast currently hold nine future picks in the first four rounds and they have plenty to offer if they want to acquire an additional pick.

That article annoys me because it omits to mention that Cyril said he didn’t want to play outside VIC, effectively making him unavailable to us.

Wingard was the same and the article mentions him as well.

Yes, though, I think that was when we were in our panic phase about Paps trying again to head home.

I did a quick search on Will, but didn't see much on what he's doing this year. However, I did find this interesting story on Tom from last year, about why he was taken so late in the draft.

Thanks for sharing that piece, DV! An interesting read. Its food for thought as we head into yet another national draft. There are diamonds in the rough every year. He is one of the best in the past decade. A real bargain! Hopefully he will be a Swan for life. I think he will.
