2023 List Management

It’s a fair point regarding Reid.
His skill set and flexibility in 3 key roles in any given game would be seen by our list management as extremely valuable come finals time each season.
Reid is one of those players you don’t need playing every game of the season but you need home or a player similar in finals series to give u a significant edge."be tough, only when it gets tough"

Agree with your comments on Sam Reid.
Yes he is injury prone, but he can play as he demonstrated last year. The problem is the one year on, one year off cycle which has been his history.
One thing I do know is Sam has been on minimal money due to the injury risk factor. I would certainly go with him for one more year and manage him as suggested by Auntie.Comment

Injury prone is an understatement. Obviously a great clubman but with the amount of games he's missed over his career, he should play for free if he stays.Comment

Bit harsh on Sammy- he’s been great for us over the years. Some players are injury prone, while others are fortunate in that they hardly get injured. But it does make it hard for list management as you never know who will be available. If he is up to it, I’d give him another year as he wouldn’t make much of a dent in our cap, I imagine, and we’re hardly blessed with versatile talls!Comment

Injury prone or not he is still an upgrade on McLean playing the second ruck role .
His flexibility is that he can also play back ,he would be picked before either Francis or Melican
Worth a rookie spot on minimum wage for depth alone if they think his body will allow it

This is no substantial knock on Sam, but he's never played at length in defence.
Occasionally, late in quarters, he's gone back there in a pinch. He's been ok at it, but he's not LRT either (think LRT's settling role late in the 2012 GF). I can't ever really recall him starting a game or a quarter in defence. It might have happened once or twice, but not consistently.
I get Sam's best is very good, and he's probably an upgrade on McLean in that forward-ruck role. But, I'm also not convinced it's in our long-term interest to keep him on the list, rather than get more games into alternatives who'll potentially be part of our hunt for a flag over the next few years.
I'll always love him as a premiership player, but there is a time to move on.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

Sounds decent, but IMO such a trade is more likely to be a multi-club trade as a part of a complex trade involving pick 1, perhaps four other top-10 picks including our first-round pick, a couple of players, and a minimum of four clubs."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

Due to all the injury time off, Sam Reid has not been beaten up as much as other players his age, so probably has a few more good years left in him if he can avoid those soft tissue injuries. It's not yet clear if he can make a complete recovery from his current injury.
I think Reid will be a late call, depending a many factors. including how we do in the trade period and the status of other injury prone players, like Tom McCartin and Melican.
I can see scenarios where he stays and others where he's cut.Last edited by Ludwig; 26 June 2023, 12:30 PM.Comment

Given Reid’s impact last year (with Reid fit and Dawson still on our list we win the flag imo) I’d be very surprised if he’s not given another year.
Doubt he’d command big money and is worth the risk as far as I see it.He ate more cheese, than time allowedComment

Worked out from his career stats that he has played 181 out of a possible 333 games. That's just over 54 per cent. Excellent player when fit but the stats are damning. Love how the Swans as a club look after players but keeping him on would be over the top.Comment

Reid has lost 2 years due to surgical removal of his plantaris tendon in each calf, so we don't have to worry about a recurrence of that injury.
We may just have to wait until September for a prognosis on his current rehab. On ability, we would want to keep him. It's just a matter of what the injury risk is. It also may depend on how it fits with the rest of our KPP status, which remains a mystery at this time.
Just to spice up the conversation, I thought I would put up my current preliminary outgoings list (retirements, trades, delistings). I figure we will cut 7 or 8, so I will list my top 8. We need to cover the 2 mid season draftees just to get even on list size, so 7 cuts means 5 new players.

Rankin was on the list until this past weekend when he played so well tagging Ginnivan. He keeps improving, so hard to cut.Comment
