worry about hamling injury worries (6 games since 2019) and 31 in april next yr. Maybe only a stop gap. Also no to adams from pies they would want the world he is also over 30/ Rather us try to upgrade our draft pciks so we are a chance for O'sullivan or murphy as key defenders and future replacement and then cleary. we woulld have both sheldrake and cleary as in-side mids

In all honesty I'd much rather us bring in Harmes to play that role. He's younger, bigger, less injury prone and has better skills than Adams, who I admit has had a decent career.
If Harnes is given an opportunity that he has struggled to get at Melbourne, for obvious reasons, then I think he could be a real surprise and a valuable money ball type pick up!
And I think the trade will cost us far less too...

I wonder if it's worth asking the question (clubs likely already have) to Jack Macrae's manager if he would like an opportunity to go back to playing as a centre bounce midfielder? That would be the player we need right now!

That would seem very fair, since Jordon has been the better player. I'm hoping we get overpaid for Stephens based on him being a high draft pick. Hard to say how suitors will value him. I would be prepared to delist him if no one wanted him. We will delist players this year that I see as having more value to us.Comment

What I meant was I thought given we didn’t de list than Re list like Melbourne did for Jordon and he has only played 60 games vs Stephen’s 40 or so I was surprised at the late second round that Melbourne could achieve from the AFL
I mean we are in a much stronger position and are trading for arguably a similar level of player and similar age and experience ……..if u know what I mean?
We might get zilch and have to delist yet Melbourne get a pick 39 from the AFL for a UFA ?
Doesn’t really seem fair to me.
Or we may end up ahead…..North May give us a early pick 30?"be tough, only when it gets tough"

I don't really get the desire to add Adams or Harmes to "fix" our clearance issue. Are people expecting Grundy not to fire, so they are looking for plan B? Or it the Mills absence, I'v seen so many conflicting reports there - very onfusing.
But assuming he misses a chunk of next season. We can only field so many players in the midfield, if someone is inserted then someone else get's pushed to the periphery. We already expect that of Parker, with him to join Papley and Heeney as occasional midfielders.
But as they look like being the future, I'd like to see what a Warner, Rowbottom, Sheldrick first choice midfield can do now - working under a competative ruckman and feeding out to Campbell, McInerney, Gulden and the running halfbacks.
I get Hamling, he's a band-aid solution to an urgent problem, just like Hickey was.Comment

I don't think we should make list management decisions based on the Mills injury. I expect he might not play until July or so, but we usually use the early part of the season to try out youngsters to cover injuries, which is important to their development. We have more than enough players to cover losing Mills for part of the season, especially considering that we've added Jordon to the list.Comment

I agree with this. Firstly, Grundy is a ruckman who adds a lot to a midfield, rather than one who kicks goals. So we should expect a better performance around stoppages by his addition to the team.

I have always found AFL so different to most other teams sports
Soccer
League
Union
The above sports have extremely dominant starting players and minimal changes to the best starting players through out the season.
AFL demands such a deep list to get through and be a dominant top4 team in part because it is such a fatiguing long 360 injury prone sport with a huge amount of jumping and risk.
I feel when we discuss issues around our mighty Swans that we don’t frame it enough about increasing the portability of being top4 team, capitalising on our current window and or genuinely having a super strong deep list.
No one is blocked in development at the Swans. We tend to give players time in reserves to build up their numbers, time, skills to AFL level. When they get a real taste of AFL it is usually cause they are ready.
That is unless they are guns and or play a role that we desperately need to fill due to injury.
Even then when they come into the AFL best 22 they tend to be given simplified roles ie run with or tagging etc so that at our more experienced players are making the majority of the decisions with the ball. Increasing predictability, impact and flow to compete at the highest level.
Roberts and Sheldrick will not be blocked in their development if they are ballistic in their stats and skills and little things at ressie level.
If they are good enough they will keep out any value and or experienced player we add to our depth of squad.
But what if they are injured?
Who is up next if Sheldrick has a third season injured?
Who?
Roberts? Unlikely to play on ball and chasing a stack of contested footy despite a good user of the ball in juniors and ressies.
We also are so off the pace Re contested footy and a serious change in their area will truly allow us a real show at the top4 in 2024. That can not come from a new draft pick easily if history is any indication unless u pick a Matt Rowell or Sam Walsh top3 picks.
We have had a very distinct cycle of adding seriously exciting young drafted players via our academy and draft.
We have just lost probably over 750 games of experience.
We have an extremely youthful team.
We are in a cycle of adding a couple value players and a couple experienced players who have immediate impact in areas of weakness and fulfill roles.
No one is getting blocked if they are good enough to dominate.
Look at the apprenticeship of Jordan Dawson first two seasons only 5 games.
He had to get his body, output, numbers, decision making, little things to a level that was baseline before an auto starter in the senior AFL team.
We are not being radical, just adjusting to our needs to be a top4 team against extremely good experienced teams like Brisbane, Pies etc
Leadership and experience list needs appropriate adjustments to succeed and that doesn’t mean a future opportunity cost.
We have youth and now a little more experience and ready made value players balances the scales."be tough, only when it gets tough"

Looks like the Adams story is real. The Age reporting that he’s requested a trade with the Swans offering a three-year contract.Comment

I can't see where else you'd play Roberts if not on ball.Last edited by Ruck'n'Roll; 8 October 2023, 03:02 PM.Comment
