We also have a key defender prospect in this year's draft. We will have to see about Arnold when he returns.

I would let go Reid, Francis and Ladhams as superfluous players. Vickery is on the edge and mush show more to hold on for another year.

So I am foreshadowing the retirements of Rampe and Fox as the next year or 2.

I think our greatest need is to get more height into the team, especially the backline, but not necessarily key defenders. I would look for tall utilities, with height ranging from JaMac to Blackey size, with good pace and skills. What is see too often is Lloyd, who is not a particularly good efemder at the best of times, getting matched up against much taller opponents. So it would be nice to get another taller body able to compete in the air when the current generation move on.

Players like Sicily, Wilkie, Luke Ryan and Tom Stewart represent the kind of player who could help out team in the coming years. If I recall, none were picked up in the 1st round.

We made a big mistake 2 years ago trading out our pick for Josh Waddle to the Hawks, a player who perfectly fits this profile, and we didn't really get the players we needed in return, although the it looked to be a good value trade at the time.

I wouldn't be drafting any mids, smalll forwards or small defenders this year. and would also consider trading one of our top picks into 2025.
Agree that with the form of Snell and Edwards we no longer are looking thin for KPDs. And I'm hoping that we will take academy product Cochran, to further add to our depth there. Also agree that we don't really have any glaring weaknesses. So I'm actually a bit "best available player". With that in mind, it's probably worth looking at who Rookie Me have got ranked at around about our picks: currently 18 and 19.

AFL Draft Power Rankings: June 2024 - Aussie Rules Rookie Me Central

First name that draws my attention is Jobe Shanahan. He's impressed me in a couple of games for the Allies, with his wholehearted leading at the ball and strong marking. While I think McDonald, McLean and Amartey will continue to develop as key forwards, our back up currently is converted defender, Hamling, I assume soon to retire, Reid, and Buller, who's spent most of the season injured and might be unluckily cut after looking good last season. So, another developing KPF might be a good idea.

Another KPF is Jack Whitlock. Although I'm slightly less keen, as they give the impression that he's more of a ruck/forward. However, if we could trade Ladhams, then Whitlock might be a more attractive option?

Perhaps something similar with small forward Isaac Kako. Apparently there's clubs interested in Konstanty, so if we trade him, then Kako becomes more tempting. He obviously has plenty of skills and looks to have more attacking flair than Konstanty, from what I saw in the Vic Metro v Allies game. Apparently he can also add a bit more spark to the midfield here and there, in the same way that Papley does.

The next prospect that I like is the WA captain, Bo Allan. They have him listed as a defender, but he's played the last couple of games for WA as an 191cm inside mid. In those games, he's topped both their possession and tackle counts. So he could be seen as a long term replacement for Parker and a backup for Rowbottom. Or perhaps even a Rampe replacement? And I don't mind the idea of further adding to our WA contingent.

Then there's Mraz, who they seem to rate highly as a KPD, even though he's been injured most of the season.

I loved reading that. I also loved how he said the club is like a second family.

We are definitely building something special. Every young player out of contract has extended.

Ralphy commented on Chad's future on Fox at half time, said Swans have had to dig deeper into their chequebook but he is staying. Is Chad now the last of our key players we still need to sign? So many are signed well into the future, nice.

Knowledgable draft commentators are saying this years draft is very strong with midfielders in the top 10 but with no clear standouts. Recruiters believe it's a very good and even draft right out to pick 30'ish, which is good for us with likely a pair of early 20's picks.

I was trying to remember do we have any extra draft currency we are carrying forward from trades last season?

Currently we have picks 18, 19 and 56. The pick 19 we got from North as part of the Stephens trade. Hopefully we can use pick 56 to match a second round bid, on academy KPD prospect Joel Cochran.

Yes, but I should add, like 707 mentioned above, if we stay first, those picks are likely to drift out to the early twenties with bids being matched.

Offhand, the highest bid is likely to come for Brisbane F/S prospect, Levi Ashcroft: who'll probably be bid on in the top 5. Brisbane might also match a bid in the 10-20 range for their academy midfielder, Sam Marshall. Gold Coast academy mid, Leo Lombard is likely to go top 10. While Carlton might have to match a late first round bid for one of the Camporeale twins. Possibly one or two others that I can't recall?

I think that's a good summary of bids to be matched deja, Crows have a F/S Scott Welsh who was projected top 10 twelve months ago but appears to have slid down the ratings.

A lot will depend on whether the AFL finally and belatedly fix the farce that is F/S Academy NGA bid matching. JUH, Nick Daicos, Ashcroft, Darcy, the GC Four all matched with discount and a bag of junk picks in the 40s and 50s.

The AFL just needs to bite the bullet, soak up the whinging from a handful of clubs with entitlements this year, and fix it!

Simply done by removing the discount, recalibrating the farcical points table to a steeper curve with picks carrying points extinguishing end of second round, say pick 39, limiting how many picks you can use to match a bid. If they did those three simple things, the angst about bid matching goes away.

As a trade off for the northern clubs who use their own funds to run their academies, the AFL needs to stump up a base amount each year for each club commensurate with what they cost to run.

Then you have Tom Morris at the end of FC last night, stating Chad Warner is not going to re-sign anytime soon despite the club feeling bullish of him doing so. Hence, claiming the 2 WA clubs feel there is a chance they can prise him out at the end of next year.

Dean Cox's future was also raised on FC last night, with Tom Morris stating the Swans are confident Dean Cox will remain committed to the club & not pursue WC coaching job.

Unofficially, the club sees him as taking over the reins from Horse whenever he decides to finish up.

Matthew Lloyd thinks Dean will take over from Horse in 2 years, with Kane Cornes then suggesting WC should target Horse if that is the case.

Sam Maclure could not see Horse leaving the Swans to coach elsewhere.

To be fair, Tom Morris is full of crap most of the time, and if he doesn't know, he just makes it up.

There is little incentive however for Chad to sign a new contract at this point. He knows the only direction his contract value is going is likely further up from here, and while I'm sure there is a strong loyalty pull our club is taking, he will maximise value by holding off for a while and trying to build interest from the clubs in the West (let alone the other 15 clubs around the competition). I think he will stay - but it will be a drawn out saga for sure.

Not sure about waiting in the belief your value will rise. I think Will Hayward signed at the exact right time even though his trajectory seemed up up up. Since he signed, his form has deteriorated. After the Adelaide game, many so-called experts said Amartey would regret signing last year as his value has now skyrocketed. I think he did the right thing.

Dawson was not about money and Chad won't be about money.

I'm looking at everyone else re-signing and noted the heart warming words of Logan after he signed, Chad will be about what he has at the Swans vs the pull of home.

As for the AFL media, they make stuff up so they have something to talk and write about. Dean Cox is certainly an interesting watch as from afar he looks the perfect choice for West Coast but who knows what Cox is really thinking - stay at the best run club in the business and take over from Horse in ? years, or go home to a club that has retirements queuing up and the Tasmania draft gutting right in the rebuild window?
