Swans showed that they are totally committed. Secondly another diamond is coming, Callum Mills, I only saw one game and Mills is very very good and maybe Dunkley, Father and Son pick next year. If the AFL punish academy clubs then AFL in the north states then starts to slowly die as the clubs dropped out of the academies and the playing level drops down again. Swans would do the some thing next year and nominate and match all selected players but whingeing Eddie has all the money and all the profile to drive his own agenda.
That's on the political side but it probably also comes down to knowledge. The Swans know these players beyond the beep test - and whether they had the likely right attitude to play senior football. The hard nuts of our recruiting dept may have decided that Hiscox and David are 30% chances of making it - and any player they selected from the draft in the same round might be a 15% chance. That's rather like the Roos' way of thinking - find discouraged senior players over first-round recruits because at least the seniors have shown they can play at AFL level.

On the other hand, does the emphasis on contracting seniors and supporting the Academy mean we don't do as well as other clubs in finding the best first round picks?

I don't think there would be anything wrong with an academy club not matching a bid if they thought it was over the odds. The main objective of the academies is not to give the northern clubs priority access (that's just a by-product to give them incentive to run the things). It is to increase the total player talent pool by better attracting and developing youngsters in NSW and Queensland. So if Hiscox or Davis had landed on another club's list, it would have contributed towards that objective.

I'm with you guys. 1 excellent pick up and 2 potentially excellent pick ups who already have a good idea of whats required to become a Swans player. I'm not sure a draft gets much better than that.

There are three reasons why the Saints would trade for Membey.

            - A more complex deal is in the works.
            - A better player will be taken in the PSD.
            - The Saints are secretly talking to another un contracted Swans player and a planning to do a GWS on us
"List Manager Ameet Bains confirms that Sydney Swans forward Tim Membrey has requested a trade to St Kilda. "We will now endeavour to get a trade done," Bains says." Trade period: Day 1 - saints.com.au
Sounds like Ameet Bains is the fool that would do that

If the Swans, Giants, Lions, Suns get nothing but spending plenty there would be no landscape as each club drops out, all these clubs depend on players from other states and "cry babies" that want to go home could kill more likely Giants and Suns. Swans culture attracts and holds most of the players they want and still hard to recruit the right players.

. Will the AFL pay for all that and a clean draft? If they do that, all good but most unlikely unless the new broadcast rights are used for that. Players can really buy in if they have something to follow. If your from a not AFL state, NSW, QLD will these players just think and jump at AFL or likely 'buy in' if a club will care for them and develop big squads and improve all levels of AFL.

It's looks like we will be quiet during the trade period. Our 1st, 2nd, and 4th round picks are all tied up.

We only have a late 3rd round to play with as currency unless we throw some senior listed players into the trade mix.

The best we can hope for Membrey is a 3rd round upgrade from late 3rd round to early 3rd round.

The Malceski compensation will be interesting. A late 2nd round pick is likely.

Maybe eye can give St Kilda Membrey, our late potential 2nd round and our late 3rd round for St Kilda's early second round round pick. We need to maximise that one pick as much as we can.

Does anyone believe that it's worth looking at a trade for Craig Bird as Mitchell will most likely have a better year in 2015. Bird would likely get us a early 2nd round pick?

Good to hear. Seemed listening to some that Davis & Hiscox were fairly speculative picks.

The drums are already beating about the Swans getting three 'bargain' drafts, the academy system is 'unfair' etc. I'm pleased the Swans have shown faith in these three but their selection and the accompanying 'noise' will play nicely for McGuire's agenda. Would Melbourne have used pick 2 for Heeney if he had been in the main draft not as part of this first stage? Was this bid simply to give the anti-academy draft concession argument a helping hand? Disappointing if so as it came from Paul Roos' club but it put a very high value on this young player.

Saints want Jono O'Rourke which might explain why they would entertain a trade for Membrey rather than leave him to the PSD

Emma Quayle rates Heeney very very highly and he would certainly have been a top 5 pick. He probably would have been ideal at the Demons so fair play to Roosy for putting in the bid.

What will conveniently be forgotten by Eddie and Co is that Heeney would not be playing AFL if it wasn't for our Academy. Not at all. But Eddie will still accuse us of getting an unfair advantage. I hope the club speaks out against any untruths he tries to spit out on this.

Even if our recruiters didn't think Hiscox and Davis were worth the picks we paid, matching the bids was still definitely the right thing to do.

Seeing three Academy kids picked up in one year could inspire the next group of 12-13-14 year old kids take up footy and want to join the Swans....you never know the next Jack, McVeigh, Hayes, Heeney or Mills could be one of these youngsters.

Here's my trade maths based look at what we should expect for Membrey. Pick 40 would be around fair value too, but it's pretty likely to be 59.

                                We can't win either way

If we pick them all up, we're getting steals, if we don't match the bids we're ignoring NSW talent.

FWIW I think there was a definite strategic move to select all of the boys this year.
