I agree Smith is the go. got talent to burn and hates Rocket. Something in common with most Sydney coaches, ex-players, members and fans. Mainly because Rocket played too many players when injured and if he had stayed I think Mickey O would have only played a couple of years more.

    I saw smith play a game a couple of years ago and Mumford had to chase him on the run from the wing. He sprinted away with poor Mummy puffing like a steam train and kicked a wonderful goal. I think they only got a few that day so was a memorable moment. Any ruckman who can do this has my vote. Here are the highlights, the goal is in the last quarter;

Zac smith would give us a real ruckman who is also very mobile.

For a start Pyke will be retiring at the end or middle of next season depending on whether his body holds up for a whole season. I don't know why we still have Derrickx, nice bloke but just a WAFL player. Nanka is ok but too slow and only really a forward ruck option. Naismith is the real deal if he can stay on the park. We have just signed him for three years. Tip could either by ruck/forward or forward. I prefer him as ruck/forward the way he played this year. that would free Sammy up to play permanent CHF. Like him at CHF or FF.

Naismith might even play more games that Pyke next year if fit. Pykie wasn't that good toward the end of the year. He is now injury prone and once a ruckman gets to that stage it is time to pass the baton.

Pyke & Derickx will finish up in 2016. Nanny is a work in progress, and Naismith is still yet to debut as he is made of glass.

I say get a quality ruckman in now (if available) before we are desperate next trade period.

Agree with these comments and reckon a first round pick should be enough to secure him.

Talia or equivalent young defender for our early third round pick we get for Bird and Robbo should leave enough in the kitty to afford Mills and Dunks with minimal carry over points to next season.

Can't see much more being done tbh as I can't imagine we'd have enough salary cap to pick up a delisted player like a Dempsey

The fact that we are looking for a ruckman would imply that Pyke is not expected to play next year at senior level. Maybe he will retire or we'll just keep him on the list because he's under contract. Otherwise we could have held out another year to see how Naismith and Nankervis develop and put off the decision until next year when things will easier from what we are capable of doing during the trade period. The WCEs have 3 ruckmen on their list, we've got 5, yet we are the ones looking to get one of theirs. Maybe we're going to open a natural history museum at the SCG.

Problem is that of our five, four are not up to scratch (Pyke too old and injured, Derickx not good enough, and Sam/Nanka a year away).

And in Tippett whilst I prefer him alternating between the ruck and FF I prefer him as a second ruckman, probably the best second ruckman in the league actually. Which means IMO we need a good first ruckman for next year.

We'll be a bit overstocked for 2016 but Pyke will be good backup for 2016 but will hopefully get overtaken by season's end by Nanka or Sam.

At the end of next season we release Pyke and Tom D and hopefully have Sam and Nanka knocking at the door. Sam has re-signed for three years so the club clearly rate his prospects and you'd think they'd perservere with Nanka too. So by the end of next season we should be OK in the ruck stocks

Or they are offering more money. They must have oodles of cap space. We don't. Plus our ongoing trade restrictions mean we're only allowed to bring someone into the club up to $450k pa, and only then if we trade an equivalent out.

Jeremy Howe - some talk about Gold Coast but nothing else I can see. Appears he is off to another club. You would think a top club will be his target. Rather pick him up than a ruckman. Are we in a position to trade players for him with our trade restrictions. Would a great acquisition to the backline.

Apparently the Dees have made a very good offer and he wants more.

Would like him but would think he'd be out of our price range on both salary cap and $450K basis

7 news talked about St Kilda offering 700,000 a year for Carlisle. Way overs for a very over rated player.

True but in the AFL these days, you pay overs if you want to land the big fish. Eg. Tippett , Tom Boyd, Tom Scully etc.

I would like to see the Swans put in a second round bid for Flynn or Himmelberg from the GWS academy. Both are promising key position players. It might be hard for GWS to match this, as they have both Hopper and Kennedy who are rated as first round selections. There are at least 5 players from the academies that are rated as first round picks and quite a few who would be good second round picks. Dunkley would need to be pretty good to get selected ahead of these, so maybe he will slip to the third round.
                          Where's the remote?

I've got mixed feelings about bidding for academy kids from other states.

My gut feeling is there should be a gentleman's agreement (nothing written or formal) that we shouldn't bid for other academy kids.

I agree that we need to be careful bidding for other academy kids but I don't think GWS will be willing to pay what they would need to for 2 first round and 2 second round picks and as Flynn and Himmelberg are both NSW boys, the Swans should select one of them.

GWS won't have any issues at all with what they need to get four absolute local guns (Kennedy, Hopper, Himmelberg and Flynn) which I guess is good apart from the fact that GWS don't actually develop talent like the other three academies, they merely mine a recruitment zone and neglect their Western Sydney backyard.

Anyway, they've got Pick 8 and it's rumoured they'll get two first rounders from the Pies for Treloar (Pick 7 this year) and you'd think they'd get Freo's first round pick (16) plus change. Not to mention what they'll get if the Dees land Bugg - perhaps a Howe-Bugg swap could work there.

Anyway, if they get those trades they'll have 5,321 points in the bank. If those kids, in no particular order, go at 6,8,16 and 18 then that will cost them 4,284 points leaving them 1,037 in the bank. It makes you think the McCarthy deal could be see the Freo pick from next years draft used instead which would give GWS first rounders already in 2016. The AFL have indeed created a monster here.

So, any thought they can't afford their academy kids is not right - unlike with us their academy will be a year on year production line with no effort from the club. I can't see it lasting and nor should it, they do nothing to develop the game, but what worries me is that instead of making them work harder in theor designated area (i.e. Western Sydney) the AFL will just reduce our zone and hand it to GWS.

There will be plenty of other clubs bidding on these kids, I just think we should not compete on this front
