I think there's good reason why we haven't heard the Swans being linked to players like Bennell and Yarran. I think both are very talented players and attitude issues aside, could be a valuable addition to any club. But the fact is that the Swans have a lot of depth in this kind of player and would only force us in due course to trade out one of our talented midfielders to make room.

It makes a lot more sense for use to focus our attention on our weakest areas, not our strongest. Players like Talia and Schoenmakers may not be in the same talent category as Bennell and Yarran, but they do play positions where we lack some depth and face retirements in the next few years. Schoenmakers would be a good pickup as he could take the 3rd tall forward role from Reid, who could then play in defence. Schoenmakers is a better kick for goal and fits nicely into a side that already has a couple of strong forwards. But I think Schoenmakers will end up staying at Hawthorn.

I personally don't rate ruckmen all that much, but can understand this being a minority opinion and why the club is also chasing another ruckman. I have a feeling we will end up with Leuenberger. Essendon look to be headed for a lengthy stink near the bottom of the ladder and doesn't offer much in the way of finals and a chance for a premiership for a 28 yo with bad knees, unless he's just in it for the money.

We will be getting one super talented midfielder in the draft and perhaps another good one in Dunkley as well, so we need to use our cap space wisely on how it gets distributed. We already have players like Craig Bird who will likely leave because of lack of opportunities in the midfield. No need to create more room for talented midfielders in our reserves side. The talk about Bird being traded might be some indication that Dunkley will be nominating us, although certainly not anything definitive. Adding Dunks would definitely close the door on Bird getting back in the seniors.

I'd be surprised if Leuenberger wanted to go to Essendon, but Geelong are now showing some interest in him. Could come down to us and the Cats.

From what I can gather, Dunkley is the last thing we need in terms of team balance. Does not have a big tank, ordinary to sub par disposal, not quick and does not have an outside game. Would not be at all surprised if we passed on him. Our midfield is incredibly strong and I don't know how you could fit him in ahead of about 8 others.
We have them where we want them, everything is going according to plan!

So how many ruckmen do the Cats need?

This just about sums it up really. He could end up becoming a good backman in a few years though.

Apparently we are into Zac Smith also. I would much prefer him to Leunberger, when it clicks for him he's gonna be a serious footballer. Leunberger, I just don't know about him. Does he take a lot of marks, does he have a physical presence, does he rack up the stats, or is he just a decent tap ruckman? Smith has untapped potential and he's not going to teach it at the GCS

The Age reckons we're after Schoenmakers. Don't know if I believe them.

Hawthorn may face battle to re-sign Schoenmakers

Yes not a walk up start, but his price wouldn't be too high. What he is is strong over the ball and has a good fend off, he could be our version of a Dustin Martin who would compliment our attack in the future. Can't believe how down on him people are...

There seems to be more noise we might get Sinclair in the jetta deal, we need a real ruck man not another forward ruck.

Seems to be more word around Lycett than Sinclair at the moment...

I dont rate Leuenberger but at least it would be free, whilst Sinclair or Lycett will cost us the points for the Jetta pick. All of them list cloggers but with Tippett, Pyke, Nankervis, Naismith, Derryk with Reid assisting, we must be having a 'Ruck' Convention! How many do we need?

Terry Wallace reporting that Essendon are front runners for Leuenberger, purely on principal it would be disappointing if he chose them over us.

It may be just that he wants to play in the footy heartland after years on the frontier.

well if Tippo is going to be in the ruck 50% of the game which is fine by me.........i think Schoenmakers would be a good pick up

buddy plays more as HFF positionally and Reid and Schoenmakers are more your leading forwards........plus Ryan could play in the backs if needed

Herald Sun reporting they're close with Smith as well, rather Smith over Luey and Lycett over Sinclair

We won't be paying overs for him I'd say but provided he goes mid 20s or later we'll probably take him.

Could not imagine Schoenmakers will be going anywhere and that he would be central to their next generation coming through, suspect it is just a ploy by his management to ensure the Hawks table a market offer given that he becomes a restricted free agent at the end of next season which is also the first time we would be any chance of making a bid.

Of course the enormous amount of money we have tied up with a bloke whose future is most uncertain will nobble us at the free agency table for at least 3-4 years now but we all knew the risks attached to that deal when it was signed.
