On "Open Mike" last night, Dustin Fletcher recounted a funny story re the time at the SCG Plugger put him over the fence, and in
the crowd nearby were the teenaged Mark & Jarrad McVeigh who gave him a spray for his troubles.

Just regarding Cyril, my memory tells me that he said that he didnt want to go interstate, so that cancelled out the non-Victorian teams. However, I think he also had some injury trouble in his draft year so a number of clubs saw him as a bit of a gamble. When Hawthorn selected him it was viewed as a gamble that could fizzle or pay off handsomely - that is why a few clubs passed on him before he was selected.

Tanked his interviews n his tests. He basically knew he would end up at Hawthorn. Hawthorn knew it wasn't a gamble they was in on the scam. Draft tampering at its best.

Wouldn't call it draft tampering, there were definitely risks surrounding Cyril leading up to the draft.

Draft tampering would be Luke Ball entering the National Draft and refusing to play for anyone but Collingwood

It's draft tampering. Like I said "draft tampering at its best". The risks part is the lie that Hawthorn n its supporters continue to put out to get people to believe what they did wasn't tampering. It's a good smokescreen. Yeh agree on the ball one also add in the Mal Michael "retirement" n then turns up at Essendon.

Incorrect. The language of observation cannot apply to future events.

SS, I found your comment about Cyril offensive. I think if you hear stories like that second-hand it is worth taking them with a grain of salt and being mindful that they have been filtered through another person's perception. Given that the sentiments are so unflattering I wouldn't have thought that whoever it is is not a particular confidante of Cyril's. When it is also such a strong and offensive allegation, I would suggest not repeating it in such a public forum.

liz, I spoke to Stuey Maxfield at Swans training early last year and he said he was working for the club as an opposition analyst.

                  Re: Macca

I haven't been eager for him to be re-signed but did say that I would offer him a modest salary and no guarantees about selection and leave the decision to him. Assuming that's what has happened (which I do) then I am delighted. There's only upside - we select only if we think he deserves selection and he continues to mentor and teach all the more junior players (i.e. our entire list). The only players that are really showing they have the wares to demand a senior spot at this stage and who aren't doing so are the third ruck and Dawson. Aliir has had patchy form and Florent is still developing. Alternatively they are fringe players like Harry C, Robbo, Foote, Marsh, Laidler etc. So I don't think Macca will be holding back too many. Besides which, there will be injuries and therefore those guys are going to get games. And hopefully others will besides. I think Macca is worth a modest salary even if he doesn't play a game in the seniors because of all the other stuff he offers. Also I think, if he is not getting a game in the seniors he will strongly consider retiring and transitioning into coaching mid-season, as others have pointed out (although, by then, the salary cap will be used up so it won't make any difference on that front).

I suppose it goes without saying, but I really hope we win and Macca gets through unscathed to play the following week.

He really deserves to be a one-club, 300-game player.

Of course we don?t know any of his contractual details so we are all guessing. But he?s a 32yo young professional sportsman who has a family and future to provide for. He has a limited earning period, in an at times dangerous contact sport. Would you take a pay cut to a ?modest salary?? My assumption would be, he didn?t either. Yes he loves the club and he can see a future there, but that loyalty can only stretch so far. I would assume that there would be several clubs out there who could offer him the same, if not better playing/coaching conditions over the next 4 or 5 years. And if he took those options for the good of himself and his family, then nobody would have blamed him.

Draft tampering! what about the West Coast recruiting Darling after he was in trouble with police just before the draft in western Australia. what a coincidence

I think he could understand the club offering a modest salary for playing given he is at the back-end of his career and past his peak. Completely different scenario for his coaching salary because this is not included in the salary cap and we can afford to offer a market rate. Anyway, "modest" is a relative term. It's still going to be a considerable 6 figure amount but hopefully much less than his peak salary which I imagine might have topped half a mill per annum.

And you're quite right that if he had taken another option to play/coach elsewhere I certainly wouldn't have held it against him.

Jarrad's a big boy, and I'm sure things would have worked out fine for him whatever he decided to do.
I'm glad he's going to go round again though, he's had a pretty good year I reckon. It's good seeing him pop up
in the forward line every now and again for a goal.

It's entirely common for players who have been on very good money, Jarred would have been, to take unders in the last year or two of their contracts to stay one club players. And I hate to agree with Eddie's comments but whilst he may "only" be on $200,000 - 300,000 that is still a very good salary for 99% of the population. And we have set up a pathway for his career after football, all without having to move his young family. Sounds like win-win to me.

I'd say he'd be on a relatively modest base but heavily incentive-based so if he plays 15+ games he'll still earn quite a good whack in 2018.

Looking ahead to 2018 I'd say all these guys could potentially come off the list for various reasons: McVeigh, Rose, AJ, Aliir, Towers, Robinson, Foote, Laidler, Maibaum, Marsh.

Clearly they won't all come off the list but next year will be the one for a squad refresh not this year. Wondering if we would look at trading our third rounder for a future pick with this in mind
